In the vast and lush tropical rainforests of South America,
once echoed the vibrant songs and vivid colors of the iconic Gallito de las Rocas, a species that inhabited the cloud forests of the region. However, today, this majestic bird faces a desolate fate: extinction. The Gallito de las rocas has become a emblematic victim of the biodiversity crisis facing our planet.
Known for its brilliant plumage and distinctive crest, is an
endemic species of the forests of South America, from Venezuela to Bolivia. For centuries, it has been a symbol of the rich biodiversity and natural beauty of the region. One of the main threats facing the Cock-of-the- Rock is the loss of its natural habitat due to deforestation. As the global demand for agricultural and timber products continues to grow, vast expanses of tropical rainforests are cleared every year, leaving species like the Cock- of-the-Rock homeless and without resources to survive. Furthermore, habitat fragmentation often isolates bird populations, further hindering their ability to reproduce and maintain a healthy genetic diversity. G A L L I T O D E L A S R O C AS HABITAT Their habitat is mostly in the Amazon regions of Peru, meaning they like the warm and humid climate with a temperature of approximately 20°C. Well, they prefer to be in dense and closed places so that the females can build their nests in caves, crevices or on vertical faces of rocks. FEEDING
Their first days they feed on
insects of many varieties but this animal is based on a diet of wild fruits, fruits or rock walls found within the cloud and Amazonian forests in order to obtain its food more easily. REPRODUCTION
Their reproduction begins in
October, ending incubation, which lasts from November to February. They lay their eggs in the crevices of cliffs. And so the females lay their eggs in nests built on cliffs or rock walls. DIFERENCES Male Its beak is yellow and its legs are orange yellow. Wings and tail are black. Flat rounded disc-shaped crest. Female: Small crest of smaller profile. Its dark colored beak with yellow tip and orange to dark yellow legs. Wings and tail are opaque and brown. WHY IT IS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION: Ir is endangered due to the
• destruction of its natural habitat such
as logging, illegal mining, construction of dams and roads, leaving this wonderful bird without resources. In conclusion, the cock-of-the-rock bird that is part of the cultural heritage of Peru but is in a very serious situation, like many animals whose existence is affected, we must remember that the causes that occur are mainly due to the
Conclusion activities of humans. deforestation and hunting them just to
sell their plumage in foreign markets. We must be aware of taking care of this bird and, like it, many other animals that are in the same situation. Let's start thinking about the consequences that their extinction can generate since every animal, plant or human being that lives in our space has a purpose. Let us become much more aware as Peruvians, being one of the main birds in our fauna and being a heritage for our country. ¡GRACIAS! www.unsitiogenial.es
