The radius of the cylinder is 0.25 m. What is the kinetic energy associated with the
rotation of the cylinder? What is the magnitude of angular momentum of the cylinder
about its axis?
30. (i) A child stands at the center of a turntable with his two arms outstretched. The
turntable is set rotation with an angular speed of 40 rev/min. How much is the
angular speed of the child if he folds his hands back and thereby reduces his
moment of inertia to 2/5 times the initial value? Assume that the turntable rotates
without friction.
(ii) Show that the child’s new kinetic energy of rotation is more than the initial kinetic
energy of rotation. How do you account for this increase in kinetic energy?
31. Rope of negligible mass is wound round a hollow cylinder of mass 3 kg and radius
40 cm. What is the angular acceleration of the cylinder if the rope is pulled with a
force of 30 N? What is the linear acceleration of the rope? Assume that there is no
slipping.
32. A cylinder of mass 5 kg and radius 30 cm, and free to rotate about its axis, receives
an angular impulse of 3 kg m2 s-1 initially followed by a similar impulse after 4 s. what
is the angular speed of the cylinder 30 s after the initial impulse? The cylinder is at
rest initially.
33. Two discs of moments of inertia I1 and I2 about their respective axes (normal to the
disc and passing through the center), and rotating with angular speeds ω1 and ω2 are
brought into contact face to face with their axes of rotation coincident.
i) What is the angular speed of the two-disc system?
ii) Show that the kinetic energy of the combined system is less than the sum of
the initial kinetic energies of the two discs. How do you account for this loss in
energy? Take ω 1 ≠ ω 2
34. A ring, a disc and a sphere, all of the same radius and mass, roll down on an inclined
plane from the same height h, which of the three reaches the bottom (i) first, (ii) last?
35. A flywheel originally at rest is to reach an angular velocity of 36 radian s– 1 in 6
second. What constant angular acceleration it must have? What total angle does it
turn in the 6sec?
36. A mass of 4 kg is located at x1 = 0 m; y1 = 0; and a mass of 6kg is located at x2 = 5m,
y2 = 4m; where should one place a third mass of 8 kg to have centre of mass at
x=2m, y=2m?
37. Three particles of masses 3kg. 4kg and 5kg are located on the corners of an
equilateral triangle of side 1m. Locate centre of mass w.r.t. 3kg?
38. The motor of an engine is rotating about an axis with an angular velocity of 100 rpm.
It comes to rest in 15 sec, after being switched off. Assuming constant angular
deceleration, calculate the number of revolutions made by it before coming to rest.
39. Two small kids 10kg and 15 kg are trying to balance a see–saw of total length 5.0m,
with the fulcrum at the centre. If one of the kids is sitting at one end, where should
the other sit.
40. Two identical uniform roads AB and CD, each of length L are joined to form a T
shaped frame as shown on figure. Locate the centre of mass of the frame.

41. Find the centre of mass of metallic letter L of uniform mass density which is 4cm
broad everywhere.

42. The energy of 968J is spent in increasing the speed of a flywheel from 60 rpm to 360
rpm. Calculate moment of inertia of flywheel.
43. Calculate angular velocity in rad/sec of a particle which makes 300 revolutions/min.
What is the linear velocity if the radius is 4 m?
44. A meter stick is held vertically with one end rough horizontal plane. Assuming that
the end at the floor does not strip find the angular speed of the rod when it hits the
floor.
45. A solid cylinder of radius R and mass M is capable of rotating freely without friction
about its axis of symmetry. A string of negligible mass is wrapped around the
cylinder and a heavy point mass m is suspended from the free end. Find the linear
acceleration of the point mass m as soon as it is released. Also find an expression
for the tension in the string.
