Self - Confidence

• Self-esteem is the way we perceive and value ourselves
• it's the opinion we hold of ourselves.
• Your self-esteem develops and changes with:
• Life experiences
• Childhood
• Interaction with other people.

• Self-confidence is your belief in yourself and your abilities.


• This can change depending on the situation.
• It's normal to feel quite confident in some circumstances and
less confident in others.
Having the Awareness
• Understanding the source of your low self-esteem

• can help you understand yourself better

• start taking steps to build it up.


The root causes of low self-esteem?

• bullied
• didn't fit in at school
• neglected or abused
• difficulty meeting your parents' expectations
• experienced authority figures who were disapproving
• criticized a lot in childhood lead your opinion “ I’m not good enough”

• Often your opinion of yourself is built in your childhood


• These become ingrained beliefs about themselves.
Other life events that can affect your self-esteem :
• stress
• experiencing discrimination
• relationship problems
• difficulties at work/school
• body image worries
• problems with money/housing
• losing your job, of hard to get a job
• physical health problems
• mental health problems
How do you boost low self-esteem?
• 1. Reflect on your values and beliefs
• Try using a journal to get to know yourself a little better.
• Make a list of your values and beliefs
• what do you value in others? What are your beliefs?

• 2. Practice self-acceptance
• Becoming more accepting of yourself helps you to feel OK about yourself
• Everyone makes mistakes.
• When you practice self-acceptance you can:
• acknowledge that mistakes are part of learning
• 3. Step up your self-care
• Try to schedule self-care into your diary and challenge yourself to prioritise it.
• The act of taking care of yourself can help to reinforce that you are worthy
and deserving of care which can improve self-esteem.

• 4. Challenge yourself
• Taking small steps outside of your comfort zone can feel very hard, but once
you see that you can do it, you gather evidence that will boost your self-
esteem
• Try something very small at first and remember to celebrate every single win.
• You may also find it helpful to reflect on past achievements and make a note
of them somewhere.
• 5. Use positive affirmations
• ‘I am perfectly capable of doing ….’

• 6. Learn to accept compliments
