3. Execution

3.1. Installation

A. Provide support assembly to meet the seismic criteria indicated in Section

01_72_10_00(01721). Provide lateral bracing for racks and equipment as required
by Section 40_05_15_17(15072). Fasten hanger rods, conduit/cable clamps, and
outlet and junction boxes to building structure using precast insert system, expansion
anchors, beam clamps and/or spring steel clips. Provide caddy clips for ¾-inch (20
mm) conduit maximum in offices with drop ceilings only.

B. Use toggle bolts or hollow wall fasteners in hollow masonry, plaster, or gypsum
board partitions and walls; expansion anchors or preset inserts in solid masonry
walls; self-drilling anchors or expansion anchors on concrete or brick surfaces; sheet
metal screws in sheet metal studs; machine screws or welded thread studs on steel
work; and wood screws in wood construction.

C. Do not fasten supports to electrical equipment, piping, ductwork, mechanical

equipment, or conduit/raceway/cable.

D. Do not use powder-actuated anchors without written permission from the A/E.

E. Do not drill structural steel members without written permission from the A/E.

F. Fabricate supports from structural steel or slotted channel framing, rigidly welded or
bolted to present a neat appearance. Use hexagon head bolts with spring lock
washers under all nuts.

G. Supports shall not interfere with the installation or maintenance of other equipment.
Allow a minimum of 12-inches (300 mm) of clearance from any heat source.

H. Protect ends of support channels and threaded rod with plastic caps.

I. Do not install “L” type channel without written approval from the Owner.

J. Do not share supports with ceiling or lighting systems. No conduits/raceways/cables,

fittings or boxes may be supported from ceiling or fixture support wires.

Hangers and Supports for Electrical Systems
K. Freestanding Electrical Equipment and VFDs
1) For 60 Hz Regions the following applies:
a. Medium-Voltage Switchgear, Low-Voltage Unit Substations Including
Switchgear and Transformers, and Motor Control Centers
i. Install on 3½-inch concrete pads. Extend concrete pad 3-inches
minimum beyond equipment footprint. Refer to Drawings for additional
requirements. Provide embedded support channels in concrete pads
installed level to within equipment manufacturer’s requirements.
b. Other Electrical Equipment in Non-Cleanroom Areas:
i. Install on 3½-inch concrete pads in wet areas. Extend concrete pad
3-inches minimum beyond equipment footprint. Refer to Drawings for
additional requirements. In dry areas, install equipment directly on floor
or on slotted channel framing mounted to the floor.
2) For 50 Hz Regions the following applies:
a. Install on raised channel sills (plinths); built into the equipment by the
switchgear manufacturer. These plinths are caulked around the whole
perimeter to prevent ingress of liquids.

L. Corrosion Protection
1) Support conduit with conduit clamps made from steel or malleable iron with rust-
resistant zinc- or cadmium-plated finish.
2) Use fiberglass or special coated metallic supports in areas subject to corrosives,
as indicated on the Drawings.
3) Cut ends of mounting channel shall have a field applied galvanized or other
approved coating.

M. Cabinets and Panelboards

1) Install surface-mounted cabinets and panelboards as required, but with no less
than four anchors. Provide steel channel supports to stand enclosure 1 inch
(25 mm) off wall.
2) Bridge studs top and bottom of cabinets and panelboards with channels to
support recessed mounted cabinets and panelboards in stud walls.
3) Provide fiberglass supports inside of electrical equipment where wire
management is required.

N. Exposed Conduit/Raceway/Cable, and Wireway/Trunking Support

1) Support multiple conduits/raceways/cables adjacent to each other by ceiling
trapeze. Where space permits, trapeze shall have 25 percent spare capacity for
future conduits/raceways/cables.
2) Support individual conduits/raceways/cables by wall brackets, strap hangers, or
ceiling trapeze.
3) Support exposed conduit/raceway/cable with 1 5/8-inch (40-mm) channel
anchored to building construction with anchoring device. Threaded studs driven
in by power charge and provided with lock washers and nuts may be used in lieu
of expansion shields. Obtain approval from A/E prior to using anchoring
devices.
4) Support conduits/raceways/cables from structural members only. Do not support
from pipe hangers or rods, ductwork, mechanical equipment, cable tray, other

conduit/raceway/cable, or other slotted channel framing supporting systems from
other trades.
5) Do not install single all-threads with conduit/cable hangers or straps for any
conduit/cable supports.
6) Do not use nails anywhere or wooden plugs inserted in concrete or masonry as a
base for conduit/raceway/cable or box fastenings. Do not weld
conduit/raceway/cable or pipe straps to steel structures. Do not use wire in lieu
of straps or hangers.
7) Ensure positive locking on all threaded-rod supports. This applies to all systems
hung by threaded rods from the truss or roof and includes any turnbuckles,
couplings or splices on threaded rods. This can be achieved by one of the
following methods:
a. Install double-nuts, as shown in Figure 1 at the end of this Section.
b. A welded nut.
c. A lock washer.
d. Double-nut all rod couplings per Figure 2 at the end of this Section.

O. Cable Tray/Rack Supports

1) Trays/Racks shall be level with respect to grade plus or minus 1/8 inch (3 mm)
per 10 feet (3000 mm) or ½ inch (13 mm) cumulative.
2) In addition to cable load, support cable tray to allow 250-pound (115-kg) live
load at each connection point, at the end of each run, and at other points to
maintain spacing between supports of 10 feet (3 meters) maximum.
3) Rigidly support cable drops to equipment using cable tray/rack, slotted channel
framing, or sleeved in conduit.
4) Support cable trays/racks using wall mounted cantilever brackets or suspension
arrangement of slotted channel framing plus threaded rods when suspended from
structure.

P. Support of Exposed Boxes

1) Install boxes in a secure, substantial manner supported independently of
conduit/cable by attachment to the building structure or a structural member.
Use bar hangers in frame construction or fasten boxes directly. Threaded studs
driven in by a powder charge and provided with lock washer and nuts are
acceptable in lieu of expansion shields. Use galvanized mounting hardware in
utility areas.

Q. Under Cleanroom Raised Floors

1) Bottom of support channels shall be a minimum 6-inches (150mm) above fab
concrete floor.
2) Bolts shall extend no further than ¼ inch (6 mm) beyond nuts to prevent tearing
of cleanroom suits.
