Optics
- branch of physics that studies the behavior and properties of
light, including its interactions with matter and the construction
of instruments that use or detect it.
Light
- electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human
eye.
Light
- electrical field is the physical field that surrounds electrically
charged particles and exerts force on all other charged particles
in the field, either attracting or repelling them.
- magnetic field is a vector field that describes the magnetic
influence on moving electric charges, electric currents, and
magnetic materials
Electromagnetic Radiation
- consists of waves of the electromagnetic field, which propagate
through space and carry momentum and electromagnetic
radiant energy.
- consists of electromagnetic waves, which are synchronized
oscillations of electric and magnetic fields.

Electromagnetic Radiation
Types of EMR
- Types of EMR include radio waves, microwaves, infrared,
visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays, all of which
are part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Types of EMR
Light
Speed of Light
- The speed of light in vacuum is defined to be exactly 299 792
458 meters / second (approx. 186,282 miles per second)
Speed of Light
- On average, sunlight takes about 8 minutes and 17 seconds to
travel from the Sun to Earth.
Optics
Photometry
- measures light with wavelength weighted with respect to a
standardized model of human brightness perception.
Radiometry
- set of techniques for measuring electromagnetic radiation,
including visible light. Consists of measurements of light power
at all wavelengths
Ionosphere
- it influences radio propagation to distant places on Earth. It also
affects GPS signals that travel through this layer.
Earth’s Atmosphere
Sunlight
- a portion of the electromagnetic radiation given off by the Sun,
in particular infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light.
- when direct solar radiation is not blocked by clouds, it is
experienced as sunshine, a combination of bright light and
radiant heat.
