Question 01
1.1 The target audience text is parents, guardians and caregivers. This text serves to address the
impact of loadshedding on their children’s mental health. The purpose of text is not only to address
the impact but also to raise awareness about the effects of loadshedding on the mental well-being of
individuals and provide suggestions on how to lessen the burden upon children. The impact of
loadshedding on mental health is frustrating to individual because loadshedding is unpredictable
causing people to lose control, stress over unfinished tasks cause resentments. Children are unable
to complete homework in time and those who are enrolled in distance learning fail to submit
examinations due to unexpected loadshedding. Lastly the visuals emphasize the difficulty faced by
children who must write their homework. The usage of a candle adds more difficulty to the writing
process because it is not bright enough compared to the usual lighting.
1.2 The genre of extract B is a dialogue. A dialogue is basically a conversation between two or more
individuals. In extract B we read a conversation held by Paula and Paulalin where they discuss the
effects of social media on Paula and try to come up with a better responsible way to use her phone.
The writer believes that social media can influence a child's image both negatively and positively. I
agree with the writer and believe with parental guidance children can find balance and learn how to
use social media in a responsible manner. Social media is the first linguistic feature is because the
conversation revolves around Paula’s usage of social media. The second linguistic feature is seen in
polite speaking ‘’ Darling I’ve noticed... and ‘’Thank you for sharing that’’. The conversation held is
one of trying to solve a problem. The dark color theme in the visual suggest that it is at night and the
young girl is busy on social media instead of sleeping.
Section B
Essay writing
Generally, one may say social media is the best way for communication and exposure given that we
live in the era of technology. Our lives are basically online from the first social media platform
sixdegree.com born in 1997 to the largest social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram used in present time. Social media is a space where an individual's self-esteem can be
bruised and lowered.
Social media is a powerful tool to communicate with distant audiences. An entrepreneur can use
social media to sell their product however while expecting positive results and opinion. If the
entrepreneur receives a negative comment from a buyer that gains traction and influence other
potential buyer’s attention. The negative comment and decreased percentage of sales can affect the
self- esteem and discourage the entrepreneur to continue pushing their product. Despite negative
comments social media also has a challenges like body shaming.
In image A frame four the grandma asks her granddaughter which service or platform would be best
for her shows that it is important to know the different social media platforms and their public
requirements. Social media being a public opinion space, the wrong picture posted on Instagram can
receive mocking comments about body appearance. These comments can lower a person self-
esteem to the point where they do not feel comfortable with themselves. Social media puts a person
under pressure because it portrays a certain standard of perfection that people feel they need to
uphold to fit in.
In conclusion, social media is an environment that needs to be used with smart mind. As a person
using social media you must make sure that you post relevant information and nor information that
can be used to hurt or place you in danger.
