4. First aid measures

Ingestion:
Rinse mouth out with water ensuring that mouth wash is not swallowed. Give as
much water as the person can comfortably drink to achieve dilution. Sodium
chloride may itself cause vomiting if ingested in sufficient quantity but DO NOT
attempt to induce vomiting. Seek medical attention if large quantities have been
ingested.

Eye:
Hold eyelids open and rinse the eye continuously with a gentle stream of clean
running water for at least fifteen minutes. Seek medical attention.

Skin:
Remove contaminated clothing and brush the powdered material from the skin.
Wash off thoroughly with soap and water. Use water alone if soap is unavailable.
Seek medical attention if any irritation or soreness of the skin persists. Launder
affected clothes before re-use.

Inhalation:
Not normally a risk, but some discomfort may follow where working with product.
Remove to fresh air. Keep warm and at rest. Seek medical attention if any
symptoms persist.

5. Fire-fighting measures
Fire/ Explosion Hazard: Salt poses no fire or explosion hazard if involved in a
fire, therefore use fire fighting procedures suitable for surrounding area.
Salt is not combustible.

Hazards from decomposition: When heated to decomposition at very high

temperature it may produce toxic or corrosive fumes of hydrogen chloride, metal
oxides.

Fire-fighting details: Salt poses no fire or explosion hazard if involved in a fire,

therefore use fire fighting procedures suitable for surrounding area.

HAZCHEM Code: None allocated.

6. Accidental release measures

Emergency procedures: Recover product where practical. Contain spills to

prevent release to water systems or environment.

Containment & Cleanup: Contain spills to prevent release to water systems or

environment. Recover product where practical, vacuum or sweep up remnants
(avoid general dust) and dispose of in sealed containers to licensed waste.

UN Number: None allocated

Personnel Protective Equipment advice is contained in Section 8 of SDS.

7. Handling and storage

Handling:
Safety glasses and rubber or PVC gloves. A half face respirator with particulate
filter may be required if ventilation is not sufficient to minimize airborne dust.

Storage:
General storage is adequate. Product should be kept cool, dry and excessive
temperatures and humidity should be avoided. Protect containers against
physical damage.
Segregate from acids, chlorine trifluoride and bromine trifluoride .

8. Exposure controls / Personal protection

National Exposure Standards: No exposure standard allocated.

Engineering Control: General (mechanical) ventilation is adequate for most

anticipated uses.

Flammability: No combustible.

Personal Protection:
Safety glasses with side shields and rubber or PVC gloves. A half face respirator
with particulate filter may be required if ventilation is not sufficient to minimize
airborne dust.

bromine trifluoride.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: When heated to decomposition at very

high temperatures it may produce toxic or corrosive fumes of hydrogen chlorine
and metal oxides. It may evolve chlorine gas when in contact with strong acids.

11. Toxicological information

Health Effects
Acute:

Swallowed: May cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, thirst, fever, and

convulsion after excessive ingestion. Dehydration may occur in most internal
organs, central nervous system may be affected resulting in confusion or coma.

Eyes: Dust exposure may cause physical irritation to the eyes because of the
particulate nature of the product.

Skin: Abrasive irritant to some sensitive persons, or when applied to open cuts
and abrasions. Intensive exposure may result in dermatitis.

Inhaled: Abrasive irritant to mucous membranes. May give salty taste or cause
irritation to nose and throat. Symptoms could be coughing, sore and dry throat.
