Abstract:

In recent decades the ground water pollution is threaten for human life and in major cities of many
countries are mainly depends on groundwater for their day to day life for the drinking and other purposes. To a
continuous investigation of the every water resources are essential for the protection against the water pollution. In
the present investigation carried out for the suitability of ground water for drinking purposes in Kovilpatti Taluk in
Thoothukudi district, Tamilnadu. There are 21 ground water samples were collected in pre- and post monsoon
sessions in study area and the hydrological parameters such as pH, EC,ORP,Cl -,SO42-,Ca2+,Mg2+, HCO3-,Total
Hardness, Sodium and Potassium were analyzed. Water quality index (WQI) of groundwater based on the data of 21
samples collected from the study area was assessed using eight parameters viz. pH, Total Dissolved Solids, Sodium,
Potassium Chloride, Sulphate, Calcium and Magnesium. The Water Quality Index of the study area are showed
using spatial distribution plots and the various statistical analysis such as piper diagram, correlation analysis were
used to determine the ground water type and the suitability of ground water for drinking purposes in the study area.
During pre-monsoon, the WQI value 418 is maximum and the value 48 is minimum in the study area and during
post-monsoon, 436 is maximum and the value 43 is minimum in the study area. In pre-monsoon, the computed WQI
shows that 52% of water sample fall in the ‘good’ water category and 23% of the samples falls ‘ very poor” water
category and this percentage of samples are changes during post-monsoon, 29% of water sample fall in the ‘good’
water category and 29% of the samples falls ‘very poor” water category and 23% of the samples falls in ‘poor water’
category because of the insufficient amount of rainfall in this Taluk during the monsoon periods. This is indicate
that the groundwater of kovilpatti taluka in Thoothukudi district can be used for drinking purposes after the water
treatment.
