VOODOO

I would like to talk about the presence of spirits, how we can miss and
overlook spirits and entities due to misconceptions in popular culture.

If you look closely, you will see the signs and understand the messages that
spirits are all around us. You are not the only one who believes it.
These signs are all around us on a daily basis, but can be overlooked. One
could easily take for granted the ease through which awareness of the spirit
world is available to us.

How many times a day do you see a cartoon or T-shirt with a ghost in it or on
it?

I’m not sure why they are always depicted as floating things with white sheets
draped over them. I have never seen a ghost that looked like that but maybe I
am missing something?

Voodoo is an example of a misidentified or overlooked culture that gives great

insight and awareness of the spirit world.

Did you know that the word Voodoo means “spirit” in the native language of
Ghana, Africa? The religion of Voodoo that is practiced in New Orleans, Haiti
and called Santeria in Brazil was the native rural religion of many West
Africans brought across the Atlantic to the New World as slaves.

One of the primary components of Voodoo is that the practitioners commonly

ask and rely on the spirits of their ancestors for assistance and guidance in
their lives. They consult the spirits regarding mating, child bearing, crop
growing, goat trading and any other important decision during a lifetime.

6
What Are Entities?

What do people tend to think about when they think of Voodoo?

People often think of spells and curses, especially the Voodoo doll that is
used to inflict pain or limitation on the person of its likeness.

If you visited a Voodoo shop in New Orleans you would encounter skulls,
snakes, candles, animal hair and other objects and implements that are
involved in Voodoo ceremonies.

Voodoo has been considered and feared as “black magic” for so long that
most people disregard it as spooky and weird.

The first time I visited New Orleans in my early twenties I was shocked at
what a dark vibe the Voodoo shops had. It was not till later that I discovered
that Voodoo actually meant spirit and so many of the simple pagan country
practitioners of Voodoo that had been brought over to America as slaves were
forced to hide their deep spiritual belief for fear of punishment and death by
their good old Christian slave owners.

The slave owners forbade black slaves to honor the spirits of the earth and
their ancestors through their “strange” ceremonies. It made the slave owners
uncomfortable and nervous when their slaves danced around the fire and
became filled with an unknown energy, “possessed” by the spirits and energy
of the universe. For the West Africans, this was the closest they could come to
their form of God, to embody the forces of the universe and be taken over by
them, completely relinquishing themselves to the spirit or energy that moves
through all things.

You could see how this may scare unbelieving white folks. Most of us would
probably be uncomfortable with that sort of free, uncontrolled, “uncivilized”
activity. How many readers of this ebook were raised to believe in the spirit
world and told that it was a great honor to be taken over by it through ritual
dance?

7
Shannon O’Hara

Not many, but there are still parts of the world, mainly in Africa where this sort
of thing is part of people's lives. But not in America, the Africans were forced
to mask and veil their practices in Christian garb and appearance. The spirits
that they used to honor and worship took on the face of Christian saints.

Of course slavery was a horrific reality. Consider how brutality and cruelty
affected people who lived in harmony with the spirit world and related with it
on a daily basis for help, guidance and contribution with life itself? A true
Voodoo believer or practitioner in America or West Africa knows the
consciousness of the universe and works with and for the energy of all things.

Many practitioners of Voodoo speak of being two-headed, having one head in

this world and one head in the next. A head to anticipate needing to pay the
light bill, and a head to anticipate the movement of spirit needed to draw that
money to you. This concept illustrates the crucial idea that two different types
of consciousness can work together within one human mind. A marriage of
the practical physical realm and the spiritual intangible realm together, a
perfect balance embodied in humanity. When these things are in harmony, all
things are possible, and there are many ways to bring about this harmony
through various types of rituals according to Voodoo.

If Voodoo has been so greatly misunderstood can you begin to see how
misunderstood the rest of the spirit world has been?

What if most of the things you were taught and told about the spirit world were
as inaccurate as so many of the myths and rumours about Voodoo?
Seek and ye shall find the truth, and hopefully be less scared.

What Are Entities?

ENTITIES VS. GHOSTS

It’s funny how things happen in life and answers to questions you have been
asking to come to you.

People always ask me is there a difference between ghosts and entities and I
always say ‘no, to me they are the same.’ But in the back of my mind I always
questioned it as well but without any awareness of how or why they would be
different. And then my path crossed with someone who gave me the
information I was looking for.

I recently moved to Sweden and I had been shopping for a bicycle so I made
a phone call about one I liked the look of. My boyfriend and I went down to the
square by the house to meet up with the guy who was bringing the bike
around for me to have a look.

He rode up on the bike and hopped off to let me have a try. I came back after
riding around a few blocks and this guy was sitting there talking to my
boyfriend about the difference between entities and ghosts. At first I thought
that guy was just talking gibberish as people can do about entities, throwing
around all sorts of strange crazy ideas and opinions. But something this guy
was saying caught my attention. He was talking about the difference between
ghosts and entities.

He said ghosts have unfinished business and are stuck or upset and entities
are more conscious. Well I may have helped him with the vocabulary a bit but
more or less but that is what he was saying.

So I went home and did a bit of research to see where the words themselves
came from and what they originally meant. And strangely enough the word

9
Shannon O’Hara

ghost comes from of Old Germanic, meaning ‘fury or rage.’ People and our
language have changed so much over time and many of the original
meanings of things have been lost and changed. But if we look we can find
out so much about the world and the very concepts we live by.

The word ghost has come to mean the soul or spirit of a deceased person but
originally it meant to rage. So this would give me an indication that those that
we call ghosts are in a stare of un-rest as those that are enraged are.

This would explain what the guy in the square who brought the bike for me to
ride was saying. It had never occurred to me this way before. Then I looked
up the etymology of the word entity. It comes from the Greek meaning ‘that
which is.’

Anyone hear and feel a difference between those two words and concepts?

So I leave this up for your own consideration. Words are not arbitrary and
vague, they have precise definitions and it is sad to say that in this day and
age very few people actually know what the words they use really mean.

For example did you know that the word weird means ‘of spirit, fate or destiny’
so when you say something is weird you are saying it is a fate and destiny.

When you see a ghost you are seeing the spirit of a person who is quite
possibly not even aware that they have crossed over and are stuck in some
way and unable to move on to a different state of unconsciousness. An entity
is a being or spirit with far more consciousness of their circumstances.

Bet you didn’t know that?

What Are Entities?

FAIRIES, NYMPHS, ELVES, DWARFS AND OTHER

MAGICAL BEINGS

Are there such things as Fairies, Nymphs, Elves, Goblins, Gnomes,

Banshees, Trolls and Spirits in the Water?

Good question and if you were asking me I would say YES.

I was 20 the first time I went to New Zealand and it was the first time I was
ever in a truly enchanted forest. My father was doing a long 10 day course in
a place called Rotorua and there were a lot of rolling hills on the property that
was cleared for sheep grazing. There was a place around the turn of a big hill
where the edge of the forest started. A path went through the forest down to a
lake. It only took me a day to discover this forest path but I always found some
reason not to go down it when I came to it.

But one day it was exceptionally hot so I thought I would take a stroll down the
forest path and have a swim in the lake. I rounded the corner en-route to the
path and stood immobilized at the edge of the forest. I didn’t quite know what I
was doing; I just felt something in the forest even though I didn’t know what it
was. I pushed myself to go into the forest and down the path.

As I entered the forest, the light dimmed through the thick foliage and I felt like
turning around and high tailing my way out of there. Then I told myself not to
be silly and kept going. I could have sworn that there were things calling to me
in the trees and I felt as though there was some darting around on the path
with me. I made my way down to the lake and at first glance I thought, “there
is no way I am setting foot in that water”. I knew there was something in there
- I just didn’t know what.

11
Shannon O’Hara

As I returned up through the path, the trees seemed to sparkle at me and I

realized “oh this must be fairies and stuff.” The forest was so enchanted it was
almost spooky, but I realized this wasn’t spooky, this was just totally foreign.
This forest had never been cut down and had seen very few people compared
to the highly populated southern California that I had come from.

As soon as I realized what I was dealing with I sat down on the path and let it
all sink in. I felt as though I was really feeling or getting the consciousness of
the trees and the plants. The wind ruffling in the leaves took on a whole new
dimension and light flickering through the canopy carried me off into a whole
new land. I’m not sure how long I was there for, but it was the greatest sense
of peace and joy I had ever remembered feeling.

What was it? Well I can only speculate, or can I?

So I pose this question, what are fairies, nymphs, elves, goblins, gnomes,
trolls and other mystical creatures?

I am sure that most of you have read at least one fantasy or fairy tale book in
your life or at least seen a movie with some super fantastic mystical magical
being in it like, Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter.
So we are all familiar, for the most part, with these mystical beings as a
concept.

What is so interesting about these beings is that the world as a whole does
not know whether they are real or make believe? Everyone knows what these
mystical magical beings are in theory, but on a whole they are considered to
be fictitious.

Then I must ask this question: If they are fictitious where, when and why did
they come into existence as characters in so many stories, tales and myths?
Did someone dream them up or were these actually the words and names of
what our ancestors perceived, sensed and saw in nature.
12
What Are Entities?

We all know that life on planet earth has gone through change after change
since the “dawn of man”. We now live in a technological, industrially driven
society where we live in controlled environments and for the most part have
lost our connection to the earth.

What do I mean by lost our connection to the earth?

How many people do you know now, who are aware of the cycle of the moon
or the effect of the seasons on the crops, their moods and rhythms and habits
of animals and what that tells us about coming events like storms or change?

Back in the day when we would have lived in more pagan oriented tribal
societies, we all would have been very in tune with the turning of the seasons
and effect that the moon, stars, and sun had on our lives here on earth. Pagan
means country dweller or rural. These country or rural societies would have
been well aware of the energy of the planet and established their lives on the
cycles of the planet, not the other way around.

They did not make and force the earth to accommodate them, they did not
aim to control the planets seasons, ebbs and flows. They honored the energy
of the planet and worked with it, learning from it to cultivate their lives in
harmony with the spirit of nature. They lived in and saw a different world then
we live in today. These were people who lived amongst the trees and waters
of the world. These were people who lived on the earth; they did not have
cities, super markets and airplanes.

I am very grateful for these modern convinces. What have we gained from
them and what have we given up?

I will begin with fairies. The word fairy is taken directly from Old French
meaning The Land or Realm. So here we can see that fairy means literally the
land, the word fairy refers to the earth.

13
Shannon O’Hara

Nymphs: Nymphs are a Greek personification of the creative and fostering

activities of nature, most often identified with the life-giving outflow of springs.
They live in mountains and groves, by springs and rivers, also in trees and in
valleys and cool grottoes. So again here we have a direct reference to earth.

Gnome means earth dweller. They often guard mines and underground
treasures.

In the Norse religion, Dwarfs, Elves and Trolls are considered to be nature
spirits divided up into families. The term families are often translated as 'clans'
or 'races'. These families sometimes inter-married with each other, and
sometimes with humans. Have you ever seen some one that looked Elvin,
Dwarfish or like a Giant?

The Norse religion is Nordic pre-history (before written records). It flourished

during the Viking Age and following the Christianisation of Scandinavia during
the High Middle Ages passed into Nordic folklore, some aspects surviving to
the modern day.

Dwarfs, Elves and Trolls are all rooted in Scandinavian lore.

Dwarfs are thought to be “dark elves” or supernatural beings. They are dark
because they reside in the underground world, in the earth. They are the light-
avoiding counterparts to the more common elf. They are skilled craftsmen,
and most of their magic involves labour, craftsmanship, and metallurgy,
miners. Gnomes are probably a form of dwarf.

Elves are often described as humans elevated after death, and descriptions of
them often have them passing through physical objects. They live in another
eerie world amongst the forests and natural places.

Troll is a word in old Swedish lore, Trolldom which was a particular kind of
magic intended to do harm. Northern Germanic terms like Trolldom means
witchcraft and Trolla or Trylle means to perform magic tricks.
14
What Are Entities?

There are many places in Scandinavia that are named after Trolls. And of
course we all know about the Tolls we pay for crossing bridges or for taking
certain roads. Is the word Toll derived from a time when we would have had to
pay a Troll something in order to pass? Trolls were thought to live in the forest
and also underneath bridges.

Goblins: Although the etymology of the word goblin is not 100% clear it is
probably the name of a spirit haunting the region of Evreux, France.
Banshees are pre-Christian Gaelic deities or nature spirits said to foretell
some ones death by wailing or singing a lament that can be heard.

All of these otherworldly beings share something. They are all spirit of one
form or another that come from and live amongst nature or literally mean the
earth or land.

Are fairies and nymphs really little invisible ladies running around in nature
with wings or are they the humanization of the consciousness of nature? Is
there magic in the earth that we humans have long forgotten?
What if we opened up to the spirits of nature and acknowledged them?
What if the spirits and energy of nature are all around us, speaking to us all
the time, guiding our lives, and we have no sense of it anymore?
What if man has disconnected from his roots in the earth? What would
happen if those roots were allowed to grow deep and strong again?

MORE: FAIRIES, NYMPHS, ELVES, DWARFS AND

OTHER MAGICAL BEINGS

In the last chapter I posed some questions about the reality of nature spirits
like fairies and nymphs etc.

Are they real? What are they? Where do they come from? And if they are real
what does that mean about our world?

Are fairies and nymphs etc. little creatures that dart around amongst the trees
and lay magical spells on us like they are portrayed in so many stories and
movies?

If you look at the history and the etymology of Fairies, Nymphs, Elves, Dwarfs
and other magical beings we learn that many of them are rooted in old
European language. These histories have spawned literally thousands of
myths, stories and legends.

Can we safely say that all of these stories throughout history are all make
believe or is it safe to say that in light of there being so many accounts and
tales there is some truth to the reality of nature spirits? And if these stories are
true why do so many people not see and experience these so-called nature
spirits?

Or do they?

What experiences have you had that may have been a direct result of
interacting with the spirits of nature, consciously or unconsciously? What
prevents people in this day and age from seeing and experiencing them?

16
What Are Entities?

Could it have anything to do with the changes that the earth is going through
with the progress of man and the destruction of nature?

What would it be like if those of us that are aware of the spirits of nature were
to truly honor them and communicate with them in whatever way we could?
What if we gave more credence to the power of nature and the earth than to
all the catastrophes going on around the planet because of man?

What do the beings of nature have to say or gift to us?

ANGELS & DEMONS

The reality of angels and demons plays a large part in our lives in this day and
age. Television and movies are full of angelic and demonic characters. Many
native cultures that fall outside the Anglo Saxon, Christian umbrella still
believe that evil spirits live in water, and they believe in the spirits of the earth,
sea and sky.

When someone is behaving strangely they are said to "have" evil spirits.
When someone escapes a death defying experience, people say that they
have angels watching over them. Who are these angels and demons and
where do they come from?

In ancient Greece the word demon meant "spirit" or "divine power".

The word demon is a Greek word, which first appeared in the work of Plato.
The original meaning of the word demon does not carry any negative
connotations, which were brought into existence later, as Christianity spread.
In ancient Near Eastern religion a demon is considered to be an unclear spirit.
In more modern Western Occultism a demon is considered a spirit that may
be conjured and controlled.

The word angel is also a Greek word, meaning messenger. Angels are
messengers from god, and are intermediary between heaven and earth.

Angels are good and demons are bad, or are they?

Television these days is full of shows depicting the supernatural. The show
‘Supernatural’ is about two brothers who go out vanquishing bad and demonic
spirits each week. The show ‘Medium’ is about a woman who works for the

18
What Are Entities?

Phoenix police department as a psychic medium. The main protagonist helps

them solve quite gruesome murder cases and her character is based on a
true person. ‘Ghost Whisperer’ is also a show about a woman who is a
medium dealing with all sorts of situations around entities.

All of these shows illustrate to the mainstream public story after story about all
sorts of situations involving entities. Usually they portray the old sagas and
fables based around Greek and Roman mythology; the ancient fight between
good and evil. How many of the stories in these shows depict happy, positive
messages about entities and the afterlife and how many of the stories are fear
based?

What kind of messages are these shows broadcasting to the watchers?

What are the predominating points of view about entities in today's society
and time?

Are people who do "bad" things like drugs, stealing, murder and harm to
others plagued by demons?

Are there spirits that influence people to be “bad”?

Are the people who do “good” deeds supported and guided by angels?

Are the people on this planet responsible for their own actions or are they at
the effect of an unseen force?

Well my point of view, since I have talked with many people and many
entities, is that for the most part the entities (angels or demons) have the
effect and power that people give them. Meaning, entities have the power
over someone that is given by that some-one.

Since most people are incredibly ignorant when it comes to entities, due to the
immense vilification of anything supernatural, spread by the Christian church
19
Shannon O’Hara

over centuries, information and education about entities and the spirit world
has been incredibly difficult to access. Many people can have abilities with
regards to entity communication and not even know about it, due to the lack of
social consciousness and awareness.

For example a girlfriend of mine, who has also been a client for many years,
told me a story the other night about a camping trip she went on with some
students of hers. My girlfriend and another teacher took a group of students
on a backpacking trip into the North Queensland wilderness. They hiked for a
large part of the day and then the group split up so the other teacher and most
of the other students could continue out onto the rocky outcrop of the
mountains they were climbing. My girlfriend stayed behind with the few
students who didn’t want to venture out further.

One of the boys, who stayed behind said he had to pee so he went to find a
spot away from the others. After he was gone for what my friend thought was
a long time she started calling his name. After the third time of calling him and
hearing no response she and the other children all started hearing someone
singing. It was the voice of an Aboriginal man that no one could see, but all
the children and my friend could hear. The boy who had left the group to go
pee returned running around the bend with a wide, questioning look in his
eyes. My friend asked if he could hear the singing and he could as well, so
they all in fear gathered up their packs and high tailed it out of there.

After attending several of my workshops and classes my friend finally came

forward with this story. She was finally willing to admit that the singing she and
the other children heard was that of an Aboriginal spirit. My friend had had lots
and lots of experiences with spirits throughout her life and she ran in fear from
them each and every time. She greeted each of these visitations as
something to run from with fear and resistance.

After I was able to clarify a lot of her experiences and give her the information
she needed to stop fearing and judging these experiences, she was able to
make sense of so much more of her life.
20
What Are Entities?

She spent the majority of her life fearing entities and assuming that if she was
unlucky enough to actually come across an entity it was going to curse her or
worse, eat her!

I have asked her recently if she has ever come across an entity that she found
was there to harm her or bring about something bad and after a good long
thought about it she reported back that in fact no, she had not come across
any truly evil spirits. What she had come across was a lot of lost spirits that
didn’t know what to do or that they didn’t know had a choice for something
different.

This is not to say that there are not really creepy, dark spirits out there just as
there are creepy dark people out there. What I am saying is the more you
"believe" in evil or demons as a reality the more likely you are to have
interactions with those sorts of beings.

Chances are that people that are assisted by angels have already made a
choice for ease and peace in their lives. They have given more power to the
goodness in life as opposed to the evil. Those that acquire a lot of darker
spirits would have given the forces of darkness more credit and power in
some lifetime.

So what I am saying is; things only have the power you give to them.
And remember, nothing need impact you or have more power than you in your
life. Remember, you choose your life; it doesn’t just happen to you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

SHANNON O’HARA

Shannon O’Hara is a world-renowned psychic

medium from Santa Barbara, California.

Shannon has been hearing and seeing the

disembodied from a very young age.

Not wanting to be seen as “weird,” she spent a long

time thinking that this ability was a curse. Eventually
Shannon realized that she couldn’t have a fulfilling
life unless she found a clear and easy way to
communicate this information to the people who
need it.

She resisted being the voice for the entities until around the age of twenty-
two. Finally, realizing what a benefit it could be to people, she began listening
to these spirits and bringing, literally, thousands of people together with their
deceased loved ones,

Shannon is a phenomenal resource for those desiring communication with

beings on the other side. Simultaneously, there is healing brought to both
sides, as disembodied beings are seeking connection with their loved ones
here on Earth.

Taking a light-hearted, humorous approach to dealing with this topic, Shannon

also is sensitive to the pain, fear, and confusion that people have about it.

She was trained and assisted by her stepfather Gary Douglas, founder of
Access Consciousness. By using the tools of Access Consciousness to help
people clear their fears and considerations about what entities mean, people
can develop peaceful awareness with the spirits in their lives.

This connection with the spiritual realms allows people much greater freedom,
choice and possibility in their lives than they have ever had before.

How does it get better than that?

Talk To The Entities Seminars

Shannon O’Hara is the creator of a unique class, “Talk To The Entites.”

She facilitates participants in connecting with entities, but more so, in

expanding their own awareness and communication abilities.

This is what C. Glassell of Houston, Texas had to say,

“After speaking with Shannon personally and attending several of her Talk to
the Entities classes, I was less afraid of ghosts and became more aware
about the spirit world.

I began to use tools she gave me to create more clarity with the spirits I had
been perceiving all of my life. I had been heavily involved in the church for
many years and left with a terrible “Fear of the Devil”.

I did not realize, until I worked with Shannon, that I was really seeing ghosts
and that I did not need to be afraid. She was able to give me tools and
methods to be in touch with other worldly beings in a clear, tangible way
instead of running in fear and living with insomnia.”

Shannon’s Talk To The Entities class is presented in various countries across

the world. Check out her web-site for more information.
