Chemical Effects of Electric current

1. W hat is electrical conductivity?

Electrical conductivity is a measure of the ability of a substance to pass electric current.

2. W hat is conduction tester? How can we make it?

A conduction tester is a device used to determine whether a substance is a good or poor

conductor of electricity.

A simple tester can be made with a cell, bulb and connecting wires.

3. W hy should we use LED bulbs instead of torch bulb when we make tester for testing
conductivity of liquids?

1. LEDs can work with very weak current while filaments of torch bulb require more
current to glow.
2. Liquids do not conduct electricity as good as metals
Therefore we use LED bulbs instead of torch bulbs in testers.

4. Does pure water conduct electricity? If not what can do to make it conducting?

Pure water does not conduct electricity. It can be made a conductor of electricity by adding
an acid, base or salt.

5. W hat is an electrolyte? G ive examples.

A liquid that conducts electric current due to the presence of ions is called an electrolyte.
Ex. Lemon juice, Salt solution

6. W hat are the chemical effects of electric current?

The passage of an electric current through a conducting liquid causes reactions. As a result
a) Bubbles of gas may be formed on the electrodes.
b) Deposits of metal may be seen in the electrodes
c) Change of colour of solution may occur.

7. W hat are ions? W hich are the different types of ions?

Ions are atoms or groups of atoms with positive or negative charge. Ion with positive charge
is called cation and ion with negative charge is called anion.

8. W hat is electrolysis?

The chemical decomposition of constituents of solution on passage of electric current is

called electrolysis.
9. W hat are electrodes?

A small rod of conducting material through which electricity enters or leaves an electrolyte is
called an electrode.

10. W hat is electroplating? List four uses of electroplating?

The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of
electricity is called electroplating.

Uses of electroplating are

a) Electroplating of silver or gold is done on less expensive metals by jewelers.
b) Iron parts in bridges and automobiles are plated with Zinc to protect from corrosion.
c) Chromium plating is done on car parts, wheel rims, bath taps etc. to get shiny
appearance and to resist scratches.
d) Tin cans for storing food are made by electroplating tin on to iron.

11. W hy is tin electroplated on iron to make cans use for storing food?

Tin is less reactive than iron. Tin coating prevents food from coming in contact with iron
and this prevents it from getting spoiled.

12. Describe the electrolysis of water with neat labeled diagram.

1. Take two carbon rods and connect one rod to the positive terminal and other to the negative
terminal of the battery.
2. Take acidified water in a beaker.
3. Immerse the electrodes in the solution.
4. After some time we can see bubbles of gases are formed near the electrodes.
5. W hen current is passed through the acidified water, water decomposes to hydrogen and
oxygen gas. Hydrogen gas is formed on the electrode connected to the negative terminal and
oxygen gas is formed on the electrode connected to the positive terminal of the battery.

13. How can you electroplate an iron spoon with copper?

1. Take acidified Copper sulphate solution in a beaker. Dip iron spoon and Copper rod in
Copper sulphate solution.

2. Connect negative terminal of the battery to the iron spoon and positive terminal to Copper
rod.

3. After some time we can see that the portion of iron spoon dipped in Copper sulphate solution
gets coated with a layer of Copper.

4. W hen current is passed through the Copper sulphate solution, it dissociates in to Copper
ions (Cations) and sulphate ions (Anions). Copper ions move towards the spoon connected to the
negative terminal of the battery.
