SIAK PALACE

Long before Indonesia officially became independent, the ancient peoples of the
archipelago had known a system of government in the form of a kingdomOne of the
kingdoms that once stood and ruled on the island of Sumatra was the Kingdom of Siak Sri
Indrapura. The greatness of this kingdom can be seen from Istana Siak Sri Indrapura which is
still standing today.
The Kingdom of Siak Sri Indrapura was established in 1723 AD by Raja Kecik who was
titled Sultan Abdul Jalil Rahmat Syah, son of the King of Johor (Sultan Mahmud Syah) with
his wife Encik Pong, with the center of government in Buantan. It is said that the name Siak
comes from the name of a type of plant that is abundant there.During the time of the 11th
Sultan, namely Sultan Assayadis Syarief Hasyim Abdul Jalil Syaifuddin who ruled in 1889-
1908, a magnificent palace was built located in the city of Siak and this palace was named
Istana Asseraiyah Hasyimiah which was built in 1889. During the reign of Sultan Syarif
Hasyim this Siak experienced progress especially in the economic field. And at that time he
had the opportunity to visit Europe, namely Germany and the Netherlands.
Istana Siak consists of two floors and has a cross-square layout. The architectural style of
the building seems to combine Malay, Arab, and European styles. Each corner of the building
has a round pillar with an eagle decoration on the top end. The windows and doors of the
palace are designed in the shape of a dome and decorated with glass mosaics. There are 15
rooms from two floors of Istana Siak. The first floor consists of six rooms. While the second
floor consists of nine rooms. The six rooms on the first floor serve as meeting places and
rooms for receiving guests. While the nine rooms on the second floor serve as resting places
for the Sultan and royal guests. Currently Istana Siak Sri Indrapura serves as a historical
tourist destination in Riau Province. This palace became a museum where relics of the Siak
Kingdom are kept.
