Choosing threads:
I used the same threads for all twelve blocks in Posies even though the borders and
applique sections feature a variety of different fabrics.
I chose the thread colours by laying out all the fabrics in front of me and selecting ten
which featured prominantly in the assorted fabrics. That’s a good way for you to choose
the threads you will use as you stitch along this year. When brought together as a quilt in
December there will be a lovely ebb and flow of blended tones.
To download the complete quilt requirements for Posies pop over here to the blog
where I have made up a file you can print and keep.

Included in that file are applique instructions and basic stitches used throughout this
quilt project, plus a list of the supplies I use for applique and hand embroidery.
POSIES – block 1 – applique and embroidery
• Trace the design onto the centre of a 5” square of solid cream background fabric,
omitting the applique shape.
• Prepare the applique shape using a fusible bonding web, such as Vliesofix
Bondaweb, and fuse it in position on your traced block.
• Blanket stitch around the cup shape with a single strand of matching thread.
• Fuse fabric stabiliser behind the prepared block and let’s stitch!
• Chain stitch the handle of the cup in Pink (or the same colour as your applique
thread).
• Backstitch the base of the cup in Pin.
• Sew a line of Green chainstitch along the centre of the cup base.
• Backstitch the lavender stems with a single strand of Light Green.
• Sew stacked Pink colonial knots for the lavender flowers.
• Sew Pink cross stitches over the lavender stems.
• Backstitch the flowers in Red and satin stitch the centres in Blue.
• Sew Green lazy daisy leaves around the flowers.
• Trim the block to 3.5” square
Make the block:
Sew the 2” x 3.5” lengths down both sides of the embroidered block, pressing the seam
away from the stitchery.
Sew the two 2” x 6.5” lengths across the top and bottom of the block, pressing the
seams away from the stitchery.
Put the block away until December when all 12 blocks are complete.
