1. The Research Problem and Its Scope

1.1 Background and Rationale of the Research

Technology has transformed marketing by making campaigns more personalized and

immersive for people and creating ecosystems that are more integrated and targeted for
marketers (Hannay, 2019). Digital transformation is forcing companies to change their
business models and adapt to the new market reality. Advances in Digital marketing devices
(DMD) such as emerging mobile digital applications for marketing provide significant
opportunity for and medium scale enterprise (SME’s) to promote and advance their
businesses (Bello, et al, 2020). Many companies without a digital marketing strategy lack
clear strategic goal. This makes it difficult to measure, through analytics, whether you hitting
your targets (Sacred Heart University, 2023)
According to Susan Ward (2023), Online Marketing is the art and science of selling
products and services over the internet. The number of businesses using digital marketing has
been growing exponentially. The development of digital marketing has immensely altered the
marketing scene. It has given all organizations a chance to market and advertise their brand
on a global platform, majorly growing their possible target audience. This further of
digitization of the marketing has also had an effect on how consumers interact and associate
with the different available organizations and brand (Stanford Global). According to Colorlib
(2023) on their Digital Marketing Statistics, nearly 60% of small business uses digital
marketing and nearly 90% of companies plan to use marketing automation.
In the Philippines, according to recent data, an impressive 66.5% of Filipino internet
users research brands before making a purchase. This shows how important it is for
businesses to have strong online presence and be actively engaging with consumers online.
In Burauen, Leyte there’s an unknown number of businesses adopting online
marketing, that’s why our research aims to determine the number of businesses adopting
online marketing in Burauen, Leyte and what influence them to adopt such marketing
strategy.

pothesis:

H1. There is a significant relationship between relative advantage and adoption of online
marketing.
H2. There is a significant relationship between compatibility and adoption of online market-
ing.
H3. There is a significant relationship between complexity and adoption of online marketing
H4. There is a significant relationship between trialability and adoption online marketing.
H5. There is a significant relationship between observability and adoption online marketing.
H6. There is a significant relationship between the demographic profile of the respondent and
the factors influencing the business in adopting online marketing.

1.4 Theoretical Framework

This study is primarily anchored with the Diffusion of Innovation Theory by Everett
M. Rogers (1962), an American communication theorist and sociologist. Diffusion of Innova-
tion Theory is one of the oldest social science theories. It originated in communication to ex-
plain how, over time, an idea or product gains momentum and diffuses (or spreads) through a
specific population or social system. The end result of this diffusion is that people, as part of
a social system, adopt a new idea, behavior, or product. Adoption means that a person does
something differently than what they had previously (i.e., purchase or use a new product, ac-
quire and perform a new behavior, etc.). The key to adoption is that the person must perceive
the idea, behavior, or product as new or innovative. It is through this that diffusion is possible
(Lamorte, 2022).
This theory proposes five factors that primarily affects diffusion process and signifi-
cantly influence consumer acceptance innovation. The five factors that impact diffusion
process are; Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability and Observability
(Rogers, 1962).

Relative advantage is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being better

than the idea it supersedes. This perception is subjective and varies among individuals or
groups. Individuals assess the relative advantage by comparing the innovation to the existing
practices or technologies. The comparison may involve factors such as efficiency, effective-
ness, convenience, and overall benefits. Relative advantage is crucial in determining the rate
of adoption. If people believe that the innovation offers clear advantages over existing solu-
tions, they are more likely to adopt it.
Compatibility is one of the key factors in the Diffusion of Innovations theory and
refers to the degree to which an innovation is perceived as consistent with existing values, ex-
periences, and needs of potential adopters. The theory posits that individuals are more likely
to adopt an innovation if it aligns with their current practices, beliefs, and ways of doing
things. Compatibility reduces the perceived complexity and risk associated with adopting a
new idea.
Complexity refers to the perceived difficulty or complexity associated with under-
standing and using an innovation. In Rogers' theory, innovations that are simpler and easier to
comprehend are more likely to be adopted. The theory suggests that individuals are more in-
clined to adopt innovations that are perceived as less complex. A high degree of complexity
can act as a barrier to adoption, as it increases uncertainty and the perceived effort required to
adopt the new idea.
Trialability refers to the degree to which an innovation can be experimented with or
tested on a limited basis before full adoption. Innovations that can be easily tried and tested
are more likely to be adopted. The theory suggests that individuals are more willing to adopt
innovations if they have the opportunity to experiment with them in a low-risk or controlled
environment. Trialability reduces uncertainty and allows potential adopters to assess the inno-
vation firsthand.
Observability refers to the degree to which the outcomes of an innovation are visible
to others. Innovations with observable positive results are more likely to be adopted. The the-
ory suggests that individuals are more likely to adopt innovations when they can see the tan-
gible benefits or positive outcomes experienced by others. Observable success stories act as
social proof and influence adoption decisions.
In line with the research, this theory and its five factors will serve as a guideline in de-
termining what factors influence the SMBs in adopting online marketing.

1.5 Conceptual Framework

As shown in Figure 1, the research is primarily associated with the Diffusion of Innovation
theory. The five factors in the theory will serve as the factors that will be used as variables in

2. Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the review of related literature and related studies, which will
provide insights and information related to the present study. This research literature will
also serve as the chief support of the study as well as the variables involve in the study.

2.1 Related Literature

2.1.1 Adoption of Online Marketing

The rapid development of Internet has directly influenced the evolution of online mar-
keting. Websites, social media, email, search engine optimization and digital advertising are
just a few examples of the different channels that make up online marketing. Businesses that
do not have a strong online presence possess the risk of losing out potential customers be-
cause more and more people are using the Internet to research for their desired products and
services (Nordin, et al, 2023). According to Demishkevich (2015), internet marketing is criti-
cal for meeting changing consumer needs and staying competitive in the business environ-
ment. Small business owners need strategies on how to use Internet marketing to promote
their products or services. Digital marketing innovation has become increasingly popular and
important in recent years due to the growing reliance on digital channels for business and
consumer communication. With the widespread adoption of digital technologies and the in-
creasing amount of time people spend online, companies must adapt to this shift in consumer
behavior by embracing digital marketing innovations (Valeriia, 2023).

2.1.2 Relative Advantage

Relative advantage is the degree to which an innovation appears to be better than any
other alternatives the potential adopter might have, measured in terms of economics,
convenience, satisfaction, and social prestige (Rogers, 2003). Relative advantage is viewed as
an advantage for an organization over previous way of performing the same task (Agarwal
and Prasad 1997). Relative advantage has been found to be one of the best predictors and
positively related to an innovations rate of adoption (Premkumer et al. 1994; Rogers 1995;
Tan and Teo 2000; Alam et al. 2007). In view of the advantages that e-commerce offer, it
would thus be expected that companies who perceived e-commerce as advantageous would

likely to adopt the e-commerce. SMEs should look forward about the advantage of using
online market which is essential to process the development of a business to promote
innovation to the customer for future and economic benefits.

2.1.3 Compatibility
SAHIN (2006) stated that “relative advantage and compatibility were viewed as
similar, although they are conceptually different”. Rogers (2003) stated that “compatibility is
the degree to which an innovation is perceived as consistent with the existing values, past
experiences, and needs of potential adopters” (p. 15). Moreover, greater levels of
compatibility increase the expected net benefits of an innovation since the innovation will
require the decision maker fewer efforts to integrate the new technology with the already
deployed ones. Therefore, greater levels of compatibility of an innovation are expected to
influence positively adoption decisions in organizations (e.g., Jeon, Han, & Lee, 2006)

2.1.4 Complexity
Complexity is the degree in which the innovation is seen as difficult to understand or
use. People are less likely to adopt hard to use or complex products (Rogers, 2003 & Rogers,
et al, 2014). The greater the degree of its complexity can negatively influence its adaptation
(Seyal and Rahman, 2003). & Rogers, et al, 2014).

2.1.5 Trialability
Trialability is the degree in which the innovation can be experienced firsthand on a
limited basis (Rogers, 2003 & Rogers, et al, 2014). The availability of an innovation on a trial
basis can be a crucial factor on why business would adopt it. This factor entails that
trialability of online marketing may be a significant influence on why SMBs would adopt it.

2.1.6 Observability
Observability is the degree in which the innovation or its results can be seen by others
likely to adopt it. If potential adopters are unaware of the innovation or do not see it being
used by their peers, they are less likely to adopt it themselves (Rogers, 2003 & Rogers, et al,
2014). This factor indicates that SMBs may only adopt online marketing when they see
others benefitting from it. This usually happens when business owners are skeptical and
avoids unpredictable results (Nordin et al, 2020)

2.2 Related Studies

In the study entitled Digital Marketing Adoption Influenced by Relative Advantage

competitive in a rapidly changing environment. The results of their study depicted that rela-
tive advantage as independent constructs of the study significantly influence the digital mar-
keting adoption but the competitive industry doesn’t influence the adoption of digital market-
ing as it observed to be insignificant.

This study is similar to Nusier, et al (2020)’s study as this research also has the rela-
tive advantage as one of the factors, the researchers seek to find out if it influenced the busi-
nesses, specifically small-medium sized business in Burauen, Leyte, in adopting online mar-
keting. This research however, uses the Everett’s Rogers (2003) Five Characteristics of inno-
vation in his Diffusion of Innovation theory.

With the recent rapid expansion of technology and the launch and rise of artificial in-
telligence, adoption of online marketing has become a necessity for business in order for
business to stay arise. According to the study entitled Factors Influencing the Adoption of
Online Marketing among Malaysian SMEs, using online marketing and Internet has become
an imperative move to improve business operations. Their research shows a relatively high
adoption of Online Marketing among Malaysian SME’s. Their findings also show that com-
patibility, complexity and trialability is the leading factors influencing the SMEs in Malaysia
in adopting Online Marketing.

Similarly, this study will also include compatibility, complexity and trialability as a
variable in finding out the what factor influence SMBs in Burauen, Leyte in adopting Online
Marketing. As this research is based on Diffusion Theory of Everett Rogers (1962). With the
limited information and scarcity of research related to digital approach of business, specifi-
cally Online Marketing, in Burauen, Leyte. The researcher will focus first on finding out the
number of SMBs who have adopted Online Marketing

3. Research Methodology

3.1 Research Design

This study encompassed a quantitative research design due to the fact that all vari-
ables were quantifiable. The rationale of selecting a quantitative study was that it is cost ef-
fective and easier to administer compared to qualitative approach (Malhorta, 2010). Accord-
ing to John W. Creswell and J. David Creswell, quantitative research design is a means for
testing objective theories by examining the relationship among variables. This involves the
processes of collecting, analyzing, interpreting and writing the research in a manner consis-
tent with a survey or experimental study. Under quantitative, the researcher uses the Explana-

tory – Causal approach, a type of study that seeks to understand the underlying factors and in-
teraction between various variables (Hassan, 2023). In Explanatory research, information is
gathered through surveys, experiments or other empirical methods and then it is analyzed to
look for trends and connection. The results of explanatory studies can provide a greater
knowledge of the variables that contribute to a certain phenomenon, which can assist or guide
future research or policy decisions. Conducting this type of research involve an in-depth ex-
amination into a certain case or event. in addition, quantitative research possesses the rigor
and coherence that is necessary for addressing the dimensions and internal consistency that
underpin the adoption of e-marketing by SMEs

3.2 Sample Units

The sample size is yet to be determine after the researchers census the list of SMEs in
Burauen, Leyte.

3.3 Sampling Technique

The sampling method that the researchers would be utilizing is the purposive sam-
pling technique. As defined by Kassiani Nikolopoulou (2023), purposive sampling refers to a
group of non-probability sampling techniques in which units are selected because they have
characteristics that you need in your sample. The researcher intends to use this sampling
method as the respondents needed by this research must online market presence or using on-
line marketing strategies.

3.4 Research Locale

This study aims to find out the factors influencing SMBs in Burauen, Leyte in adopt-
ing online marketing. Hence the locale of this study is within the municipality of Burauen.

3.5 Research Instruments

This study will utilize questionnaire as a medium for gathering data. The instrument
that will be used is adapted from similar research entitled “Social media adoption and its im-
pact on firm performance: the case of the UAE” of Ahmad, et al (2018). The research ques-
tionnaire is split into two parts. The first part contains the profile and demographics of the re-
spondent while the second part contains the questions about relative advantage, compatibility,
complexity, trialability and observability factors.

3.6 Data Gathering Procedure

For this research to be successful, various procedure are to be followed by the re-
searchers. First, the researchers will produce a letter of request to be approved by the Local

Chief Executive of Burauen, Hon. Juanito E. Renomeron. The letter will serve as a formal re -
quest of the researchers to have a list of SMEs in Burauen necessary for the data gathering
procedure. After having the list of SMEs, the researchers will then choose a sample from it
using a purposive sampling. During the data gathering, the researchers would give the se-
lected respondents a consent form stating that the data that would be gathered would be
solely used for academic research and would stay strictly confidential. The letter should be
signed by the selected respondents indicating that they agreed with the set up to use their in-
formation for academic purposes. Then, the researchers would now conduct the interview
with the use of survey questionnaire through personal interaction. Further, the respondents
would be given time to answer the questionnaire, assuming the respondents were done an-
swering the instruments, researchers would then collect the papers. Lastly, the researchers
will then give appreciation to the selected respondents for cooperating and giving time amidst
of their busy schedule.

3.7 Ethical Consideration

The researchers will first ask permission before conducting the research. The primary
priority for the researchers will be to keep participants’ accounts confidential and secure.
Strict protocols will be followed to safeguard the data collected and ensure that it is accessi-
ble only to authorized user. It is also important to obtain consent from participants. The re-
searchers will explain the objectives of the study, the nature of the data collection and how
the data will be used. The participants should understand that their participation is not manda-
tory, and they can withdraw from the study at any time with no repercussions. Researchers
also need to reduce any risks that can arise from handling private financial data. The financial
information gathered should only be used for research reasons, and researchers should man-
age it appropriately. Unless express agreement is acquired, data will be processed and pre-
sented in aggregate form to prevent identifying specific people or entities. Additionally, open-
ness is crucial, with researchers offering concise justifications. Concerning the intended us-
age, distribution, and storage of the data.
