Kamov Ka - 50-2
"The Ka-50 two-seat version (TSV) of the basic Ka-50 one-seat helicopter is the latest
embodiment of the Kamov Design Bureau’s half-century experience in rotorcraft design and
onboard systems integration. The Ka-50 TSV is designed to engage ground/surface and air
targets (tanks, boats, helicopters) with pin-point accuracy at a range of up to 8 km in adverse
weather conditions in daytime, and up to 5 km at night. It is a highly agile weapons delivery air
platform boasting advanced aerodynamics. Flight superiority of the coaxial Ka-50 helicopters is
especially evident in hot climate, mountainous and maritime regions.
Main missions of the Ka-50 TSV include close air support, air reconnaissance, armed escort, air-to-ground/air-to-air
missions, target acquisition/distribution/designation, co-ordination of combat helicopters group actions, pilot training. The
two-seat Ka-50 can exchange data with Ka-31 radar picket helicopters, groups of Ka-50 combat helicopters, ground-based
command and control posts at a tactical and theater level, artillery/MLRS command and staff vehicles.
The crew of two seated side-by-side scores higher mission success results thanks to better co-operation and faster
decision-making. Either pilot or co-pilot can assume a full flight and weapons enployment authority. This is also the best
layout for crew training and skills improvement. High-level automation of flight tasks considerably reduces the crew’s
workload.
Avionics
The Ka-50 TSV integrated avionics ensure, round-the-clock VFR/IFR operations, including:
ground target acquisition and identification based on optronic sensors data integration;
target designation to a flight group of 4 ... 6 helicopters, as well as to ground weapon systems;
The helmet-mounted sight enables instant target designation data input into the fire control system.
The new generation avionics of two-seat modification of the Ka-50 combat helicopter is an integrated multiplex system.
integral search-and-aiming system with laser channels for missile guidance on the basis of gyrostabilizised
optronic system;
digital computer;
The helicopter avionics can include radar system the following missions to carry out in any weather conditions by day and
night performing of:
ground and air targets detection and tracking and transfer of their coordinates to airborne weapons.
Weapons
The weapons system includes a turret-mounted 30mm automatic gun with selective feeding with full allowance of 480
rounds, including 240 armour piercing ones and external stores of guided and unguided munitions. Depending on the
assigned tasks external suspensions (up to 2500 kg) on eight underwing pylons can include the VIKHR anti-tank laser-
guided missiles with shaped-charge and HE-Frag warheads, IGLA-V air-to-air missiles, conventional air bombs, pods with
23mm guns, grenade launchers, 80mm rockets. The advanced fire control system provides high weapon delivery
effectiveness (in air-to-ground missions, for example, it can keep the gun continuously aimed on target).
Survivability
To enhance survivability under hostile fire, vital systems and basic auxiliaries are made fully redundant, the cabin and
windshields are armoured to withstand hits of 12.7mm armour-piercing bullets and 23mm-projectile fragments, and the
rotor blades remain operative sustaining hits of 23mm-projectile fragments.
The co-axial rotor system without tail rotor provides enough effective power for highly agile manoeuvring both at low and
high altitudes. With only one engine operating, the helicopter can complete the mission.
Special measures are taken to suppress the Ka-50 TSV physical signatures in optical, radar and infrared bands. For that
purpose exhaust gases are split and mixed with cold air, engine heat is screened, absorbing and deforming paints are
applied. Survivability is strengthened through use of radar warning receivers, flare/chaff dispensers, impact-absorbing
landing gear and airframe parts, self-sealing fuel tanks and engine exhaust ejection system. Durable airframe with parts
fastened to displace safely at crash landings, protects the crew from injuries in emergency cases.
Ejection seats ensure safe crew escape in the entire flight envelope. The crew can also bail out through the portside door
of the helicopter in a straight and level flight.
Power Plant
The Ka-50 TSV power plant consists of two turbo-shaft engines rated 2,225 hp each, mounted on either side of the
fuselage. The engines are equipped with fire-warning and extinguishing systems, dust-proof intakes providing 80% air
purification, and air ejection system reducing engine exhaust temperature.
Maintenance
The Ka-50 TSV helicopter has advanced maintainability features incorporated at a development stage. The built-in test
equipment and intelligent diagnostic algorithms allow ground personnel to quickly locate and fix malfunctions.
On-ground servicing is carried out without stepladders thanks to convenient access to components and units in the low-
height airframe compartments through large fuselage maintenance doors. Besides, composite materials need no
lubrication or sophisticated servicing. Simplified maintenance facilitates autonomous combat missions during 2 weeks
without ground support equipment.
The Ka-50 TSV has as assigned service life of at least 5000 flight hours within 25 years.
