ECSU, AA
Outline
 Physical assessment
 Geographic setting
 Climate
 General environmental conditions
 Waste management system/Sanitation condition
Solid, liquid and Abattoir service
 Urban green areas assessments
 Environmental problems
 Geological condition assessments
 Geological hazards
2
Physical Assessment

 Geographic setting:
 Location – Absolute/Relative
 Area of the town (in hectare/square meter)
 Shape of the town – compact/elongated
 Drainage system of the town

3
Cont’d
 Micro climate characteristics: Basic climatic
elements include:
 Temperature (oC) – minimum, maximum, mean
values,
 Rainfall (mm) – daily, monthly, annual distribution
 Relative Humidity (%)
 Wind – speed (m/s or km/hr) and direction (wind
rose diagram)
 Sunshine hours
 Agro-climatic / agro-ecological zone of the town
4
General environmental conditions
 The major environmental components to be included in
the assessments are:
 Vegetation and forest resources – coverage, level of
deforestation, causes and effects
 Energy resources – types and impacts on the
environment
 Wildlife resources – dominant wildlife species,
estimated population, existence of conservation area
such as parks, game reserves and sanctuaries, relevance
for tourism
 Soil – major types and their geographical distribution,
agricultural value and extent of soil degradation
5
Cont’d

 Water resources potential

 Surface water systems – types, drainage types,
depth and width of rivers, use, problems associated,
etc
 Subsurface/ground water sources – types of
aquifer materials, potential pollution sources,
recharge conditions, flow systems of springs, etc

6
Waste management system or Sanitation
condition assessment
 Solid waste:
 Institutional arrangement
 Generation rate (kg or m3) for the last 5 years – estimate per-capita
generation
 Major types and sources
 Methods of in collection and transportation
 Number of SW storage facilities and spatial distribution
 Solid waste disposal or landfill site and parameters for selection
 Budget allocated, e.g. for the last 5 years
 SW recovery methods – reuse, recycling and composting (organic
waste) practices
 Major challenges
 Opportunities
 Future plans

7
Cont’d

 Liquid waste
 Major types and sources
 Per-capita generation
 Means of collection and transportation
 Ways of its disposal
 Disposal site selection criteria
 Liquid waste generated by volume (m3) during the last 5
years – residential, commercial, institutions (hospitals, schools,
government offices, etc), municipal services, industries, etc
 Abattoir/Slaughterhouse service – evaluation of site
selection as per the criteria;

8
Urban green areas assessment

 Green areas, parks, open and public spaces:

 Coverage
 Distribution
 Location
 Ownership
 Accessibility
 Value (cultural/aesthetic)
 Management, etc
 Nursery site – if available, major plant species

9
Environmental problems
 Environmental pollution problems
 Air pollution - indoor/outdoor, sources
 Water pollution – sources
 Soil pollution
 Sound pollution
 Land degradation
 Flooding problem and flood prone areas
 Utilization of environmentally sensitive lands
 wetlands,
 forest,
 boreholes, etc
10
Geological condition assessment

 Geological setting/structure
 Physical and chemical properties of rocks and soils
 Mineral potential
 List of mineral resources available – metallic, non-
metallic, energy, construction/quarry, mineral water,
hot springs;
 Potential site/location
 Environmental impacts of mining – pollution (air,
noise, water, soil), erosion, subsidence, etc

11
Cont’d

 Geological hazards assessment

 Types of hazards and factors contributing towards it:
 Mass wasting or mass movement
 Flood hazard
 Seismic hazard
 Groundwater (pollution) hazard,
 Soil erosion or sedimentation hazard
 Water logging hazard
