Camping: Let’s Go!

The American naturalist and conservationist John Muir said, “The mountains are calling and I must
go.” One way to experience the mountains, or anywhere in the outdoors, is to take a camping trip.
Before you go, however, it is necessary to make some thoughtful preparations. (a)
__________________________________.

First, you need to prepare your camping gear. The basic equipment you need is a tent, sleeping bags, a
simple camp stove, cooking and eating utensils, and a flashlight. Additional equipment to make camping
more comfortable might include sleeping pads, pillows, and a lantern. (b)
__________________________________. Another option is to rent gear from a camping store.

(c) _______________________________________. The main thing to remember about food is to

keep it simple. Think about how many meals you will have on your trip, and plan accordingly. A simple
breakfast consists of instant oatmeal, fresh fruit, and instant coffee. Pack things such as sandwiches,
instant macaroni and cheese, and canned soup for lunches and dinners. Nuts and dried fruit make healthy
snacks, and marshmallows are a special treat to cook over an evening campfire.

Finally, you also want to keep it simple when you pack your clothing. The more you pack means the
heavier the load to carry to your campsite. So, check the weather forecast and pack your clothes
accordingly. You will also want to be prepared for any sudden weather changes. Bring a good jacket in
case of rain, an extra sweater in case of cold, and a hat to protect against the sun. Of course a
comfortable pair of shoes is an essential on any camping trip.

If the mountains are calling you, as they did John Muir, make sure to take the time to prepare.
Having the right gear, food, and clothing can allow you to enjoy the camping experience without
worrying about details once you arrive. Make a list of the things you have and the things you need, and
head to the mountains!
