SECOND SEMESTER TAKEHOME TEST FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

YEAR OF STUDY: 2
Date: 15th May 2024

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This Test consists of two (2) printed pages.

2. Each question carries equal weight.
3. Answer ANY THREE questions.
4. The submission deadline for the test is 22nd May 2024.

1. (a) With the aid of a suitable diagram, illustrate the input-output inter-relationship between
signals and systems. [4 Marks]
−3(t +1)
(b) Signals δ (t−α ) , the Dirac delta function advanced by α ∈ R, and g ( t )=e cos πt enter

a system that incorporates a multiplier and an integrator (Figure 1). If α = , compute y (t )

and identify one possible application of the system.

2. (a) Briefly explain a LTI (Linear Time Invariant) system. [1 Mark]

(b) Give one practical application of a LTI system. [1
Mark]
(c) With the aid of a suitable example, explain the procedures for testing whether or not a
system is LTI.
[4 Marks]
(c) Consider a communication system that adds two signals: f ( t )=3 t +u(t) and g ( t )=tf (t),
where u(t ) denotes the unit step function. Show whether or not the system is LTI. [4
Marks]

3. (a) In most engineering problems, signals should be converted from one domain into another.
Briefly explain the importance of this process, and give two methods that can be used to
accomplish the task. [4
Marks]
(b) An input signal f ( t ) enters a differential system that generates an output y (t ). The system
processes f ( t ) according to the equation

variable such that Y ( s j )= j−0 .5, and P be the probability of randomly selecting points from S :
