2. Golf Hooks and Slices

The second major of 2024, the US PGA Championship was won by Xander
Schauffele. Thrilling PGA victory over Bryson DeChambeau, portrayed major golf in
the best possible light at the end of what had been a troubled week for the
championship.

Xander Schauffele secured his first major title. The tournament took place
at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Schauffele’s victory came after a
dramatic weekend, where he and Collin Morikawa were tied going into Saturday.
They maintained a narrow lead, with challenges from Bryson
DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland. The championship was decided on the 18th hole,
where Schauffele’s skilled stroke allowed him to make a birdie and clinch the title.
His mental focus and determination played a crucial role in his success. Before this
win, Schauffele had played in the PGA Championship for eight consecutive years,
accumulating seven career wins but none at major tournaments.

3. Tilgate Seniors Spotlight

John Fraser

John was born in Edinburgh (parentage was from Shetland), age 68.

25 | 3 2
Tilgate Forest Golf Club Seniors Newsletter
May 2024
[The earliest known human habitation in the Edinburgh area dates to approximately
8500 BC, during the Mesolithic period. Later during the Bronze Age and Iron Age,
Celtic (original Britons who came over from Europe) settlements were established.
Just before the 7th century AD, descendants built a hillfort in the area of modern
Edinburgh. By the 14th century it was recognised as the capital of Scotland.

The history of the Shetland Islands has a rich past shaped by the Vikings.
‘Norwegian Norsemen’ these Vikings mainly invaded and occupied the islands north
and northwest of Britain. Norsemen ruled the Shetland islands until the 15 th century,
the islands were eventually annexed to the Scottish crown in 1472. The principal
language of the islands until the 18th century was ‘Norn’ derived from old Norse.]

John semi-retired at age 61 and fully retired at 67. Many of you would have noticed
John working part-time at Tilgate Golf Centre (Glendale) for 6 years.

Having attended University and not liking it, John left to earn him daily crust, first as
a labourer, then as a barman and as a fitter’s mate at British rail. Eventually seeking
a career, he joined Dan Air at ‘Sumburgh airport’ in Shetlands, which then brought
him to ‘Gatwick airport’ until the end of 1992, Dan Air ceased operations in 1992.
John then spent a few years as a salesman for Rock oil distributor. Eventually John
drove a Private Hire Car for 20 years with various local companies in Crawley before
joining Glendale on a part-time basis.

John has many childhoods happy memories whilst on holidays at grandparent’s croft
(small agricultural landholding with dwelling) in Shetland. Grandma milked the one
cow, made butter, and collected eggs each morning, although sheep was the
mainstay. Cooking was over flames from burning peat in a range cooker. When they
wanted fish, there was trout in the loch plus plenty of haddock, cod, saithe, and
mackerel in the local bay. According to John, these were great holidays.

Also, as a child in Edinburgh, John walked through ‘Leith Links’ which was the
original home of what became the ‘Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers’ who
wrote the original rules of golf.

John joined Tilgate Seniors during the 2020-21 season and is currently happy to stay
on his 28 handicap.

Hobbies include Golf, football, politics, puzzles, reading and DIY. Also playing ‘Call
of Duty’ on Xbox.

Married to Judie (John met her at Crawley Folk Club), they have 3 sons and 4
grandchildren.

5. Tilgate Moments

As per ‘Jon Dummett’ (Head of Golf at Parkwood Leisure/Glendale Golf),

“Tilgate Forest is deserved of its place in the Golf World Top 100 Best Value
Courses for the third year running. Its mature treelined fairways have drawn
comparisons to the UK’s finest woodland courses. Yet at less than £40 a round you'll
still have change to enjoy a pizza & beer, overlooking the 2000-acre country park.”

A poem about ‘Tilgate Golf Course’ by Keki Singporewala:

“Amidst Crawley residential neighbourhoods and helicopters overhead, where dew-

kissed grasses sway, lies the Tilgate Golf Course, where golfers find their way.
Fairways stretch like emerald ribbons, winding through the trees, A canvas for
dreams and challenges, where golfing spirits seize.
At the first tee, anticipation hums in the morning air, Golfers grip their clubs, hearts
beating with care. The sun peeks through leaves, casting shadows on the ground, as
they address the ball, seeking that perfect sound.
Wooded fairways beckon, a sanctuary for the wild, where squirrels scamper, deers
and rabbits roam, untamed and mild. The ancient trees stand sentinel, whispering
tales of old, as golfers navigate the doglegs, their stories yet untold.
Birdsong accompanies their journey, a sweet serenade, as golfers read the slopes,
their focus never swayed.
The greens await, their undulating contours a mystery, Each putt a dance, a delicate
balance of skill.
And when the round wanes, Golfers gather memories - the birdies, the pars, the
bogeys, the bold. The 18th green awaits, a final challenge embraced.
So, here’s to Tilgate Golf Course, where dreams take flight, where friendships are
forged, and the love for golf burns bright. May our fairways remain lush, our greens
forever true, A haven for golfers, under skies of endless blue.”
