Personal Narrative
A favorite memory of mine is from my time spent amongst the trees and nature with the
smell of a woodfire spreading throughout the area. I was at one of my favorite places to be, the
forest. Specifically a forest that was called Four Rock. It had this name because of the four major
rocks found near the entrance to all the hiking trails. Four Rock also contained the “pirate ship,”
the ship was actually made up of a multitude of fallen trees, but they fell in such a way that it
resembled a ship ready to sail out to sea. I spent lots of my childhood in this forest with my
friends, I learned survival skills as well as fun activities to do from teachers that guided us
One of my favorite specific memories was from the day that I was trying to make my
pump drill. A pump drill is a type of drill created from wood and stones that is commonly used to
start friction fires. I was working on the drill with a teacher named Gavin. I had seen his pump
drill that he had created and knew that I wanted to make my own. I started by walking around,
scanning the forest floor for the perfect, straight stick that was also made out of hardwood. This
proved to be a pretty difficult task as Four Rock is mostly made up of Pine trees, which are soft
wood. Eventually I found the perfect stick. I then took my sought after stick and whittled the end
off to make it into a point. I remember using this while the heat of the campfire was radiating all
around. It was a very hot day, but the fire was useful for cooking lunch, as well as the red hot
coals which were being used for projects other kids were doing. I then obtained two other flatter

pieces of wood and used Gavin’s pump drill to drill holes through them in order to put the center
stick through them. This was quite the difficult process as pump drills aren't the most effective at
drilling holes through things, they are more useful for creating friction fires. Gavin then helped
me tie two rocks in between the two flat pieces of wood to act as weights so that the drill would
be balanced, and would be able to have enough energy to be able spin around in without stalling.
The last step was to put a string over the top and wrap it around the center stick and use that as a
rip cord to get the drill spinning. Then finally, my very own pump drill was done. I brought it
home to show my parents that afternoon, and the next day, I was back to camp to test it out and
This experience along with others at Merrohawke allowed me to expand on a key part of
my identity which is creativity. Throughout the years I take part in lots of different tasks that
woodworking and creating things with just simple pieces of wood. I have made lots of things
ranging from the desk I use today, to a swim float that will have its maiden voyage this summer.
I enjoy creating the designs for things and then making them a reality, this requires lots of
imagination as well as creativity to make a logical, good working design. I like to work on these
projects with friends and family because of all the things that I can learn from them to better
myself. I love spending time with my family and learning from them. I spend lots of time in
Rockland, Maine with my uncle working on cars and learning how to weld. I also spend time in
and he has taught me so much, he helped me create my desk which ended up turning out to be an
