thousand years until the establishment
of the Republic of China in 1912.

the emperor was the earthly
representative of the gods and had a duty
to rule justly and benevolently.
The ruler was seen as the intermediary
between the people and the gods

moral character

if the ruler was corrupt or


incompetent, the dynasty would lose
the Mandate of Heaven, and a new
dynasty could arise to replace it.
