ROTATIONAL MOTION
Date: 20-Nov-2019
By: Muhammad Kamran khan
Instructor: Miss Ayesha & Dr. Faisal Zeeshan
Objective:
The main objective of this experiment is learn and
understand the following:
1): observe that torque produces rotational
acceleration α.
2): derive acceleration and angular displacement Ɵ
from angular velocity ω.
3): understand and use the relationship v=ωr which
connects rotational with linear velocity.
Scope:
The purpose of this experiment is to understand the
rotational motion. Rotational motion plays an
important role in our industries and other work
places specially in our mechanical engineering.
The understanding of rotational motion , velocity ,
torque and displacement is very important in
mechanics.

Theoretical explanation:
As we know that the potential energy of a body is
given by the following relationship:
P.E= mgΔh
Where:
m= mass of body.
g= gravitational constant i.e 9.8 m/ s .
2

and Δh is the change in height of the body.

So we use equation (1) in over calculations to find
the potential energy of the body at different
heights.
Procedure :
1): After connecting wire between the photogate
and the computer system and other
arrangements.
2): Open the physlogger icon and then press the
connect button so that the system start its
working.
3): Then rotate the axle of the apparatus so that it
start rotating freely.
4): The graphical pattern will appear on the
screen and a wave will start moving.
5): The graph will be continue as long as the axle
is rotating.
6): Whenever the axle stops , press the disconnect
button.
7): Then go to the EXPORT and then RAW and
then save your file with extension (file name).txt.
8): The experimental data will be save in the form
of program and we will be able to use it in
software whenever we want.
9): Then open the MATLAB AND reload your file
extension and then there will appear a blog which
will have two boxes one for file name and the
other for threshold velocity ranges from 0.3—0.7.
10): Enter the threshold velocity and then press
OK
11): Then input the command FINDOMEGA and
press enter button.
12): The graph for the data will appear on the
screen.
13): for the second part of the experiment, attach
the mass through the thread to the shaft of the
axle and release the weight through a pulley so
that is start moving downward and then save the
data file for this experiment as mentioned in
steps (1) to (10).
14): but in the (11) step , input the command

 Observations and calculations:Δ
The height can be find from the graph by following
formula:
Δh= h −h
2 1

As from first point:

= 46 – 18 = 28 cm
Δ h1

And then convert cm to (m) by dividing the answer

by 100.
And the mass of the body is constant , in our case it
is m= 250 g = 0.250 kg.
The table of potential energy from the graph is
given below.
Sr. no. Δh(m) P.E
01 0.48 1.1760
02 0.28 0.6860
03 0.20 0.4900
04 0.13 0.3185
05 0.09 0.2205
06 0.05 0.1225
The software generated graphs for the above
experiments is shown below:

Analysis & discussions:

The graph reveals following important results:
 The potential energy is the greater at the
start of the experiment where the height of the
mass is high and is decreasing gradually as the
height decreases.
 The depth graph also shows the same
behavior as for the potential energy.
 The revolution versus time graph shows
that the number of revolutions increases as the
time passes.
 The angular velocity decreases with time.
 The angular acceleration also decreases
with time.
Precautions:
 Attach the apparatus carefully to the
computer system and make sure the wires
are properly set.
 While rotating the axle , make sure the axle is
unloaded.
 Save the files properly and add .txt must with
the file extension name.
 Save the graphs for use.
 Remember the commands.
Comments:
This experiment plays an important role in the
physics.
The knowledge of rotational motion is very
important in mechanics and all fields of
engineering.
This is a simple experiment and helps to
understand different relationships between
different physical quantities.
