OPERATING WITH INDICES SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Explore indices using a calculator

1 a 42 + 43 = 80 b 36 – 34 = 648 c 85 + 82 = 32 832
45 = 1024 32 = 9 167 = 268 435 456
2 3 5
NO, 4 + 4 and 4 are not NO, 3 – 3 and 3 are not
6 4 2
NO, 85 + 82 and 167are not
equal. equal. equal.
Note: Note:
42 + 43 = 4 × 4 + 4 × 4 × 4 36 – 34
and = 3×3×3×3×3 – 3×3×3×3

45 = 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 which is not the same as 32.

d 73 × 72 = 75 e 106 ÷ 102 = 104 f 45 × 46 = 4 194 304

76 496 495 14 103 13 411 = 4 194 304
YES, 45 × 46 and 411 are

equal.
as dividing by 10 then by
73 × 72 = 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7
10 again.
= 75
Each division cancels one
multiplication.

g 32 × 53 = 1125 h 22 × 23 × 25 = 1024 i 59 ÷ 53 ÷ 52 = 625

155 = 759 375 210 = 1024 54 = 625
NO, 32 × 53 and 155 are not YES, 22 × 23 × 25 and 210 YES, 59 ÷ 53 ÷ 52 and 54 are
equal. are equal. equal.

2 a When adding or subtracting numbers with the same base, you can/cannot add or subtract
their powers.

b When multiplying numbers with the same base, you can/cannot add their powers.

c When multiplying numbers with different bases, you can/cannot add their powers.

d When dividing numbers with the same base, you can/cannot subtract their powers.

e When dividing numbers with different bases, you can/cannot add their powers.

f When multiplying or dividing numbers with the same base, the base stays the same/changes
in the answer.

TASK 3 The power of zero

1 In both tables, the number to the power of zero is equal to 1.

2 80 = 1

3 A number raised to the power of zero equals 1.

4 You will get an error message because 00 is undefined (has no specific meaning). Zero to any
power is zero because you are multiplying zero by itself. But for 00 you are not really multiplying
zero by anything. In some mathematical arguments 00 is taken as 1, in others it is taken as 0 while
in others it is classified as unknown or impossible to find.
