FESTIVAL
Traditional autumn celebrations are not exclusive to English-speaking
countries. The harvest season has inspired hundreds of celebrations all around the world. Among them, it is, of course, Halloween but also the Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated in Vietnam, for example. These two holidays differ significantly in their origins, themes, and activities. Firstly, about the origins. Halloween is a holiday that's celebrated annually on the night of October 31st. The word "Halloween" comes from the name of a holiday held in 800 AD called "All Hallows' Eve", the day and evening before "All Saints' Day", celebrated on November 1st. In ancient times, October 31st was the eve of the Celtic New Year. On this day, the Celts held the festival of Samhain in honor of the Celtic lord of the dead. The celebration of Samhain also marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the cold, dark time of the year. The Mid-Autumn festival is held on the 15th of August (Lunar Calendar). No one knows where this came from or when it started but Autumn has been known as a harvesting season and the middle of autumn was a time for celebration after a bountiful harvest back in the time. Nowadays, it has become an occasion for the family to gather for a feast and for children to have fun together. Secondly, about the traditions. Halloween day is often associated with orange and black, and strongly associated with symbols like the "jack-o'-lantern". Additionally, people often dress up in costumes, for example, ghosts, witches, black cats, pumpkins, or skeletons; and paint their face On the Mid-Autumn festival, the moon is the most beautiful and brightest shining like a gorgeous hue. This day is associated with a tray full of moon cakes and fruits. Thirdly, about the activities. Halloween activities include costumes and attending costume parties, ghost tours, bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, reading scary stories, and watching horror films. Mid-Autumn festival activities include "pha co", enjoying the tray of moon cakes and fruits, and joining some traditional games like lion dance, tug of war, star- shaped lantern parade, and dragon snake. Lastly, about the food. On Halloween Day, people use the insides of the pumpkin to make food, such as pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie. The most typical food in the Mid-Autumn festival is moon cake. In conclusion, Halloween in the UK and the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam are both considered an autumn festival that is an occasions for children. Halloween focuses on the supernatural and community engagement. In contrast, the Mid-Autumn Festival is rooted in agricultural traditions and mythology, emphasizing family reunions, gratitude for the harvest, and the joy of children.
