WRITING TEST 1

You said you’d like to come and stay for a while in the summer, so I’m writing to ask if you’d like to
visit in July.
By the way, it’s my brother Tim’s 18th birthday on 10th July so try to be here then, because there’ll be
a big special party to go to. Lots of our friends and relatives will be there!
I’m on holiday in July too, so perhaps we could go camping for a few days as well?
If you’re coming, let me know if there’s anything else you’d particularly like to do. Then I can make
some plans.

Write an email responding to Pat. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Answer 1:
Dear Pat,
I am so happy to get your feedback on my suggestion to stay with you on my visit next month. I think July is fine,
it is a perfect time for travelling, in fact.
I really love parties, so of course I will try my best to get to your place in time to join your brother’s birthday party
because it is a good chance for me to get to know your relatives and your friends. I will be very happy if we can go
on holiday together for a few days. It has been such a long time since my last camping, so it is fantastic. By the
way, I always think about visiting the “Chua Ba” festival in your town: therefore, I really love to have some time
going to that place with you, if that is ok? I want us to have unforgettable memories on our holiday, so just think of
making a plan for the festival.
I am looking forward to getting your feedback as soon as possible.
Love,
Answer 2:
Dear Pat,
It is so great to get your email as I always think about you. It is perfect when you suggest that I visit your place in
July because actually it is the best time for my visit.
If Tim’s birthday is on 10th, I will try to get my flight’s booking before that so I can join his occasion and spend my
time with your friends and your relatives at his special party. I must say I have never had a chance to join a
birthday party in Vietnam, so I am so curious about it.
You know that I have always loved camping, so of course, I have no objection to your plan, we will go camping
together and a few days doing things like that in July will be the best time of my life.
I really want to get more information about your place, so what about visiting an art gallery or an exhibition on
culture? I am sure it will be helpful and interesting.
Looking forward to getting your news.
Best regards,
WRITING TEST 2

I’m studying different festivals from around the world for a project I’m doing. Can you tell me which
is the most important festival in your region and when it happens?
Also I’d be very grateful for any information you could give me about the festival itself.
If you think it is worth it, perhaps I could come and see what it’s like. What do you think?
If I come, will you be free? I'd like to see you again and perhaps we could visit the festival together.

Write a letter responding to Sam. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Dear Sam,
Viet Nam is a country with 54 ethnic minority groups so there are so many festivals throughout the year. However,
most festivals take place after Tet holiday which is the most important festival of Kinh group. Tet festival, which is
also called Lunar New Year Festival often falls between late January and early February; it is among the most
important holiday in Vietnam. Officially, the festival includes 1st, 2nd and 3rd day in Lunar Calendar; however,
Vietnamese people often spend about nearly a month to celebrate this special event. It is to thank Gods for the
arrival of spring with a variety of blooming trees and flowers after a cold and harsh winter. Many activities are
organized to celebrate the festival. Many kind of traditional food are made to welcome the festival.
I recommend you go to Vietnam on the Tet festival to learn about our culture. I will take you around to see the
festival.
Yours sincerely,

WRITING TEST 3

Thanks for inviting me to stay with you when I visit your country next month. I'm not sure how to get to
your apartment from the airport. Could you write back giving me some basic instructions? What would
be the best method of transport for me? I'd prefer one that isn't too expensive!

Just one other thing - what will the weather be like when I get there? (Just so I'll know what clothes to
pack!

Write a letter responding to Sam. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Dear Sam,
I am very happy to hear that you will visit my hometown. It is very far from the airport to my home. You have to
get off the plane at Noi Bai airport in Ha noi . You can go to Thai Nguyen by taxi, car or bus. It takes about 2
hours. The bus is very cheap, but you will have to catch 3 trips. Taxi is the most convenient way. However, you
have to pay more for a taxi than a car. I think moving by car is most suitable for you.
About the weather, it is autumn here, so you should bring summer clothes. My country is tropical climate, it is
always hotter than yours.
Hope to see you!
Yours,
Jon
WRITING TEST 4
Some English friends, Peter and Sue Hall, have written to you for advice. Their 20-year-old son, Tom, wants to get
a job teaching English in your country. This is part of a letter you have received from them:

Tom’s doing a teacher-training course at the moment, as you know, but he thinks he ought to
learn something of the language before he comes, which seems like a good idea. He’s bought a
“Teach Yourself” book on the language, but we were wondering if you had any other
suggestions which would help him. It’s quite a while since he studied a language at school, so
he’d also be really grateful for some general tips on learning a language.

Dear Peter and Sue Hall,

Teaching English in Vietnam is a great job, but your son will have many troubles of language difference. He
should spend time learning Vietnamese by many ways. “Teach Yourself” book is a good way, but I think taking
part in a course is a good idea that helps him improve communication. Speaking and listening are very important
skills for his daily life in a foreign country. Some overseas students have to eat bread for a long time because of
language barriers. Try to practice as much as he can. Why doesn’t he come and live with my family some weeks?
He will have chace to interact with Vietnamesese and we can help him be familiar with new life here. Believe me,
it is the best way. Write me back and tell me your mind.

WRITING TEST 5
You recently helped organise a college ski trip and you have received this email from a parent of one of the
students who went. Here is a part of the email.
I understand you were one of the organisers of our son's ski trip. I have to say my husband and I were
extremely dissatisfied with the arrangements. My son has informed us that the ski slopes were poor,
the lessons were fewer than promised and the accommodation was inadequate.
Can you please give us a satisfactory explanation?
Yours sincerely,
Nora White

Write a letter responding to White. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Dear Ms White,
First, let me apologise for any disappointment your son experienced on our ski trip. It is true that there were several
concerns. Since we had been led to believe by the company that there would be sufficient slopes for both beginners
and advanced skiers, we were extremely upset when this turned out to not to be the case. It was also unfortunate
that lack of snow meant that artificial snow had to be used instead.
As for the question of lessons, if you look at the letter we sent you, you will see that only five one-hour lessons
were included in the price and that extra hours would have to be paid for separately.
In relation to accommodation, I am not quite sure what you are referring to. I know that in one room there were not
enough beds but this was not the case in your son's room.
We would like to assure you that we take all complaints seriously. We have already decided that next year we will
change the company and the location for our trip and we hope that your son will consider joining us again.
Yours sincerely,
LiLy
WRITING TEST 6
You have just received a letter from your English penfriend, accepting your invitation to come and stay with you
just after Christmas. Read part of his letter below.

Thanks very much for the invitation to stay with your family for a few days after Christmas – of course I’d
love to come!
I’ve already found out about flights, and I could arrive at 12.30 midday on the 27 th December. As you know,
I’ve never been abroad during the Christmas holidays so I have no idea what to expect. What kinds of things
do you normally do then? And what’s the weather like there at that time of year? Let me know if there are
any special clothes I should bring with me.

Write a letter responding to him. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Dear Lizze,
I am making plan for our holiday in Vietnam. When you come, I will take you around my city for a full day. After
that, as other people, we will choose a place for travelling. I suggest us come to Sapa. You will like it. There are
many ethnic groups with different colourful traditional clothes. The nature is really beautiful with plum flowers
everywhere. The food are very special, you should taste and feel. Sapa is the coldest city in my country, it often has
snow in the winter. When you come, it is the mid-winter, remember to bring the clothes which can help you keep
warm. However, the weather here is not so cold as your town.
Yours,
Sarah

WRITING TEST 7.
You are studying English in London and you’ve just received a letter from your friend, Ken, who is a sailing
instructor on the south coast. Read part of his letter below.

And I’m really enjoying the job.

By the way, we’re going to run weekend sailing courses for complete beginners. Why don’t you come down
to Hamble and do one? You’ve always said you wanted to . learn to sail, so this would be an ideal
opportunity. And after only a few weekends you could get your certificate.
We start the first one next month – let me know if you’re interested.

Write a letter responding to him. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your name.
Dear Ken,
Thanks for your letter. I am very interested in your weekend sailing course. However, I am having some subjects in
this term, unfortunately, one class is on weekend. It will finish in three weeks later. The first course will start too
early. If there are any other course, which begin when I finish my class, I will register after my class end. One more
thing, I really worry about the fees. You know, I’m a student. Money is always problem with me. Are there any
policies which can reduce the fees for student to participate in the course? If it has, what will I have to prepare any
procedures? Please write me back soon and let me know more information.
Love,
Thomas
WRITING TEST 8
Your English friend Tom came to visit you recently and he has just sent you an email and some photographs. Read
part of his email below.

Thanks for taking me to the airport. I hope your journey home wasn’t too long.
I really enjoyed staying with you. Here are the photos I took. Which one do you like best?
When I got home, I realized I left my watch behind. It’s green and gold. You haven’t found it, have you?
I think we’ll have a great time together when you come here in September. We could either spend the
whole time in my family’s flat in the city or stay on my uncle’s farm in the countryside. Which would you
like to do?

Hi Tom,
It is so lovely to receive your letter, and I know that you are safe and sound. There is no need to say “thanks” to me
and it took me just nearly half an hour to get back home from the airport.
I am so happy when you feel free at my house and I have just looked at all the photos you took when we were
together, you know, the photos of us standing side by side with the blue sea in the background was amazing, I love
it best. And about your green and gold watch, do not worry, because it is in my hand now, you left it near the sink
when you went into the restroom, I guess.
Now I am thinking about the time we will have together in September, actually, I really want to stay with you on
your uncle’s farm in the countryside. I haven’t had a chance to experience living on a farm yet, I am very excited
about the crops, the cattle and the surrounding landscape.
Tell me right away if there is anything new.
Love,
John

WRITING TEST 9
You have just received a letter from your English penfriend, Mark, inviting you to come and stay with him in the
summer. Read part of his letter below.

I’m sorry I haven’t written sooner, but I’m busy helping my parents out on the farm.
It’s a great fun though I haven’t got used to getting up at six every morning to milk the cows. We often
have the radio on while we’re doing it, so it’s not too bad. Then, once we have had breakfast, we tend to
spend the rest of the day outside, either in the fields or looking after the sheep.
Do you remember Lady, our oldest sheepdog? Well, she has just had puppies! If you are free in the
summer, you could come and see them all and help with the harvest as well. Let me know if you can make
it – we’d love to see you again.

Dear Mark,
It’s so nice to receive your news. I know that you are busy helping your parents out on the farm so don’t worry
about writing to me late.
Getting up early is not easy for us, especially to milk the cows, but I think it is very interesting. I was amazed when
you say that you often listen to the radio while milking because it was a long time ago since I last listened to a
radio. I can’t imagine what taking a rest in the field is like but I prefer doing this, lying in the field and breathing
the smell of hay, fantastic.
How can I forget that cute old sheepdog, she was always around me when I was there. It’s such wonderful news
about the puppies, I’m so excited to play with the moon my next trip.
In fact, I’m going to ask you if I can come to stay on your farm this summer, I am so happy when you suggest like
that, of course, I really want to have a meaningful holiday by helping your family with the harvest.
Looking forward to seeing you in the summer.
Love,
Jon
WRITING TEST 10
You have received a letter from your English-speaking friend, Renate, who is planning to visit you. Read part of
his letter below.
It was great to talk on the phone last week about my visit to your country. I’m sorry that you won’t be
home when I visit but it’s great that your brother can meet me at the airport and let me stay at his house.
As I have only 10 days, where would you recommend I visit? And also what is the best way to travel? Is
it expensive to hire a car?
One other thing, I’d like to bring your brother a present. What do you think he’d like? Maybe he’d like
some of my country’s chocolate.

Write a letter responding to Renate. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.
Hi Renate,
I feel so bad about not being able to spend my time with you on your 10-day visit. I have to do my probation for a
month before. I take my graduation exam, but it is so wonderful to know that my brother can take care of you
instead of me.
In fact, I’m a bit worried about where you stay when you come to my country, but staying at my brother house is
wonderful and you will be happy with that. If you want to spend your time relaxing, I think you should go to Nha
Trang beach. It is a famous beach with blue sea water and you can also enjoy seafood with low price. There are
several means of transport you can use such as coach, taxi and bus to get to Nha Trang beach but I suggest you go
there by bus because it is very cheap and convenient, hiring a car here is very expensive and not good because you
are not familiar with the roads in my country.
Thanks for your thoughtfulness to my brother, he really loves chocolate so it will be a fantastic gift for him. Have a
nice stay and make sure I don’t miss anything while you are here.
Love,
John

WRITING TEST 11
TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You are planning to visit your friend Robin in Canada. Robin has written to you. Read Robin’s letter.
My friends and I are going to a sports camp in the mountains in July. We’d love you to join us there.
We can play tennis, hockey, football, basketball and other sports. We can stay in rooms or sleep in tents. Which
would you prefer? We’ ll cook together in the evenings. Is there something special from your county that you could
cook?
You could fly over to Canada a few days before the sports camp and stay with me here in the city. What would you
like to do before we go to the camp?
Write soon.
Robin
Write an email responding to Robin. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

Dear Robin,
Thank you so much for your invitation. I would love to join with you. A sports camp is a wonderful choice for the
weather of July. It is always a thing I want to do with my close friends. I like to sleep in tents. I think it will make
our journey more adventurous and interesting. As you know, I am not really good at cooking. However, I can make
some steamed meat, grill, roasted fishes… I will fly over to Canada about one week before the trip. I hope you can
take me to some famous and beautiful places in your region. I love photographing, so it will be very great if I can
take some photos about the scenery and our activities in your town. I want to try some traditional food of your
country, too. Finally, thank you again for inviting me.
Give my regards to your family.
Best wishes,
John.
WRITING TEST 12
TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You have received the following letter from your English-speaking friend, Natalie.
Thanks for inviting me to stay with you when I visit your country next month. I’m not sure how to get to your
apartment from the airport. Could you write back giving me some simple directions? What’s the cheapest means
of transport? What will the weather be like when I get there? What kind of clothes should I take?
Write an email responding to Natalie. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1
Hi Natalie,
How have you been so far? I hope you’re well and looking forward to your trip to England. It’ll be great to see you
again. I’ll be on holiday when you come, so I’ve got plenty of time and we’ll be able to visit a few places together.
The cheapest and easiest way to get to my house from the airport is on the bus. The V3 will drop you off in
Milton town centre. I’ll be waiting for you at the bus stop when you get there, so you won’t get lost!
It’s still quite chilly here, so bring some warm clothes and maybe even a pair of gloves. It might rain as well, but
you can borrow my umbrella!
Well, that’s all for now Natalie. When you have a moment, drop me a line and confirm your flight and arrival
times. I’m sure you’ll have a brilliant time.
See you soon,
Jack
SAMPLE ANSWER 2
Hi Jenny,
I got your letter today and I am looking forward to seeing you soon in Canada. By the way, how is your family
doing? Are they excited for you?
About your question on how to get to my apartment, you should take the train that is across from the airport. Just
ride the Blue line to District One which will stop at Marketplace Street. Across from the street is my apartment. It
is purple and easy to see. I’ll be outside the train station to make sure you don’t get lost. I think this is the best way
to go because it’s much cheaper than a taxi. If you go by taxi, it will cost over 100 dollars, but a train ticket is just 2
dollars.
Also, you must bring warm clothes to Canada. Bring a jacket, gloves, scarf, and extra socks. The temperature in
Canada can reach between 0 and 15 degrees Celsius. This can be dangerous. Once again, I can’t wait to see you!
Love,
Susan
WRITING TEST 13
TASK 1
You are helping to organize a visit to an English Language Academy in Manchester. You have received a letter
from John Webster, the director of the Academy. Read the letter.
I am very glad to see that you are coming to our academy in July. I am sure you will all have a very enjoyable time
and that you will learn a lot of English.
You can either stay all together in a youth hostel, or individually with local families. Please tell me which you
would prefer.
Tell me something about your group so that I can organize interesting spare time activities. What sort of things do
they like doing?
Please ask if you need any further information.
Yours sincerely,
John Webster
Write an email responding to John Webster. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include
your name.
SUGGESTED ANSWER
Dear John Webster,
I would like to thank you for your letter which arrived on 8th May. I am writing to provide you with information
about the stay of my group in Manchester. We really appreciate the possibility we were given by English Language
Academy. This visit is a big advantage for us for the reason that it helps to improve and foster our English
communication skills.
Regarding the accommodations, all of us prefer staying with local families instead of the youth hostel. It will be a
great opportunity for us to get to know local culture and enjoy different kinds of local food.
Most members in my group are around 20-25, so I would expect to take them around the city and visit several
famous places in Manchester such as Manchester Town Hall, Centre Library or Football Club Museum when they
can arrange their time.
Thank you again for your support and your warm welcome to your city.
Yours sincerely,
Michael

WRITING TEST 18

We must make sure that Rupert doesn't know we are planning this surprise. I'm not sure how many
people to invite but our house is definitely too small. Do you think we should book the Royal hotel
for the evening and have the party there? I've also been wondering what we could all buy as a
present. What do you think?
Could you come the day before the party to help with preparations? There's a lot to plan so I'd really
like your help. Can you suggest something else that will really make the party special?
All for now, best wishes,
Maggie

Write an email responding to Maggie. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.
Dear Maggie,
It will be an unforgettable memory with Rupert. I want to make him both surprised but touched, so I suggest
holding a party at home. Moreover, I’m afraid that people would focus to take a lot of selfies photos in Royal hotel
instead of paying attention to the party. Therefore, we can invite up to 20 closest friends and relatives to create a
cozy atmosphere.
Speaking of the present, I am really confused in making the final decision. Do you think a book would be
meaningful? I’m thinking of having a dress code or theme for all the guests. We can choose royal, pirates or ghost
concepts. I feel extremely eager for the party. I will help you decorate the house the day before.
Looking forward to meeting you on the big day!
Love,
Thomas

WRITING TEST 16
TASK 1
I enjoy my job but I often sit at a computer all day. I don’t get much exercise so I often feel tired. I consider
going to the gym but I often work very late. Could you recommend something else I should do to keep fit?
Do I really need an instructor or I can do by myself? Also, do I need to buy any equipment to do exercise?
Does it cost much to buy them?
I look forward to your reply
Answer
Dear Jane,
I received your letter regarding your concern about ways of keeping fit last week and after reading it I felt
extremely sympathetic with you as we have the same problem. Not getting enough physical exercise is, needless to
say, a common situation for most of people doing sedentary jobs like us. Similar to you, I do not have time to go to
the gym as I need to work overtime a lot. Thus, last month I decided to buy a running machine and some other
gymnastic equipment. Luckily they don’t cost much so there’s no need for you to worry too much about the
spending.
Regarding your question about an instructor, in my opinion, it’s a good idea to have an instructor at first, who can
help you get accustomed to using the machines and give you advice on how to use them properly and get most
benefits from exercising. But then when you are familiar with those machines, you can spend time alone. Just buy
some devices and get an instructor to help you some days a week, you will feel better after a short time.
Please let me know your decision in the next letter. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Paul
WRITING TEST 17
TASK 1
I have just watched such a fantastic program about traditional festivals in the world. There are not many
festivals like these in my country. Are there many traditional festivals in your country? Which is the most
popular one? Could you tell me about it? In what time of the year does it happen? What do people often do
in this occasion? Is it widely known by international tourists? Do young people in your country still enjoy it?
I look forward to your reply.
Answer
Dear Lily,
I was really happy to receive you email in which you mentioned a fantastic program about traditional festivals in
the world and wanted to know more about festivals in my country. As you know, Vietnam is the country with
hundreds of festivals each year. Among those, the Mid-Autumn festival is one of the most famous one, which is a
traditional celebration for Vietnamese children.
The Mid-Autumn festival is held on the 15th of lunar August. On this day, the adults and the parents prepare parties
for children with many different foods such as candies, biscuits, jellies, and fruit. Moon cakes are the special cakes
made for this festival. This type of cake can never be missed in any party celebrating this day. Not only are parties
offered to children, they are also provided with various nice lanterns and diverse funny masks for the special
performance in the evening of the full moon. It is really an exciting show.
Nowadays, although some of the traditional toys have been replaced by modern toys, the meaning and the
performance has been kept and developed. It is certain that the Mid-Autumn day is important and famous for
Vietnamese people. Everyone wants to join in it. And it really is a good example of the traditional culture of the
Vietnamese.
Please let me know your favorite festival in the next letter. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Paul

WRITING TEST 18
TASK 1
One of my hobbies is watching TV. There are many fantastic programs for me to watch. Sometimes I can
spend my whole day watching TV. Could you tell me about TV in your country? Are the programs
interesting to you? What is your best favourite TV program? What is that program about? How much TV
do you watch every day? Do people in your country watch too much TV these days?
I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Answer
Dear Paul,
I was really happy to receive you email in which you told me the TV programs that you like watching. Similar to
you, I am very fond of watching television though I can spend only one or two hours per day sitting in front of a
TV screen due to limited free time. Of all the TV programs, I like the news and documentaries best as they are not
only interesting, useful and relaxing but also full of surprises.
The news programs shown on all TV channels at 7:00 p.m. help me to know almost everything about different
places in our country and important events happening all over the world. Through these programs, I can also know
about the main national and international sporting events. The documentary program at weekends is also my
favorite. By watching it, I can learn a great deal about human civilizations, the wonders of nature and the amazing
inventions and discoveries of great people in the world.
Same as me, many people in my country watch TV every day. For us, watching TV is a way to keep ourselves
updated with latest news about the world. How about you and people in your country? Please let me know in your
next letter. I look forward to your reply.
Your sincerely

evaluate you as a candidate.
First of all, how old are you? Secondly, we would like to know what, you think, makes you the ideal

area near a national park. Which would you prefer?
Please send us this information as soon as possible, and feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
Write a letter responding to Ms. Johnston. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include

Thank you for your letter which requests further information and provides more information on the available

As revealed in your letter, there are two vacant positions, one at Pebble Beach, and another at Spruce Mountain. In

ethnic groups of people there, which is really different from our lifestyle in the developed cities. Hence, I would be
grateful if you let me take that position.
I am looking forward to taking part in the program.

TASK 1
You have applied for a job helping out at a summer camp for children, and you have just received a letter from Mr.
Jones asking you to come for an interview. Read part of the letter from him below.
Your application made a very good impression on us, and we would like to invite you to come for an
interview. We will be holding the interviews on the first and second weekends in May. Are you available for

Answer
Dear Ms. Jones
Thank you for your invitation for an interview at your location, which, in my opinion, is a great chance for me to
learn something about your company before starting work. Besides, it was really kind of you to offer to pay for the
travel expenses.
Regarding to the time for the interview, as I have plans to take part in a voluntary activity in another city and will
not be available in the first week of May, I would be grateful if you could arrange my interview in the second
weekend of the month.
Concerning to your question about the time I can start work, according to my current company policy, employees
need to submit one week prior notice. Therefore, I can only start job one week after the interview.
I am looking forward to meeting you at the interview.
Yours sincerely
Jim

However, one of the interviewers was so impressed with her knowledge that he offered her a position in the library.
Richard and Anna had to delay their trip as Anna was informed that she was having a baby. Now they are busy
preparing for their new family member. How about you? Is everything good?
Please reply soon. We all miss you and hope to see you soon.

You have received an email from a friend from an English-speaking country, Patrick, who wants to find a summer
job in your country. Read part of the letter from him below:

I’d love to spend the summer working in your country. I think I could learn a lot! Do you think it would help me
improve my knowledge of your language?
I have some experience of summer jobs in supermarkets and last year, I worked in a restaurant all summer. What
summer jobs might be available in your area?
I would not expect to earn a lot of money, of course, but do you think I’d earn enough to pay for my expenses?
Finally, if I get a job, would it be possible to stay in your house?
Please write me soon.
Write a letter responding to Patrick. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.
Dear Patrick,
It’s great to know that you are planning to come to my country.
I bet that your language will improve considerably after your time here as you have many opportunities to practice
it with local people. In my country, it is rare to see a foreigner doing part-time jobs in a restaurant or supermarkets
but I suggest you work as a tutor. Many students want to study language with native speakers and I can help you to
organize some classes. Although the pay is not very high, it is enough for your expenses here. About your
accommodation, you can feel free to stay in my house. You know you are always more than welcome at my place.
Let me know about your ideas. See you soon.

but you do not have to worry about the concert quality because they prepared very carefully. The best time to take
photos, in my opinion is at the beginning of the concert as some of our guests will deliver speech and all
performers will come on stage to welcome the audiences. For your interview, I would be pleased to introduce you
to Dr. Charles Wales, the MC of the shows. He could answer all of your questions relating to the concert as he has
worked with us since our first concert.
If you need any more information, I am always ready to provide.
Yours sincerely,

You have just received a letter from your English pen friend. Read part of his letter below.

Guess what? My parents have given me some money for passing my exam, so I can splash out on something
really special. I can’t choose between buying a new computer or saving up a bit more and getting come clothes.
Which do you think would be better? And can you suggest what exactly I should get?

Write a letter responding to him. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.
Hi Alex!
It was great to hear from you. I'm glad for your success, well done! You deserve that money. Well, regarding
your question, I'll try to give you some advice. To my mind, you should wait a bit more, maybe till Christmas,
to get a computer game because it will be cheaper and there will be better ones. I would go for the clothes if I
were you. I've noticed you need a new tracksuit for your running activities, don't you think so?
There's a new sport shop in my street, why don't you come and have a look? There's a black tracksuit that
would suit you very well, It's from a good brand and has a low price, it's a bargain!
So that's my suggestion, I'm looking forward to hear about your decision.
Take care,
Antonio

part of his letter.
I really enjoyed staying with you. Here are the photos I took. Which one do you like best?
When I got home, I realized I’d left my watch behind. It’s green and gold. You haven’t found it, have you?

later so don’t worry. I'm very excited to come there with you in September. I'm so excited about countryside
life because I usually see it on TV show. I have never try to live in a farm. I like riding horse, flying kites,

TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
An English friend of yours, Anne, is a student. She has written to you asking for advice. Read part of her letter
below.
We’d love to know when best time of year to visit your country. Also, we want to meet people of our own age
(17-18). What’s the best way to do this?
We don’t want to carry too much stuff, so can you tell us what clothes we should bring? And while we are
there, would you like to join our group and travel round with us? I think it would be great fun?

Write a letter responding to her. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.
Answer:
Dear Anne,
I am really pleased to get your letter and get to know that you are going to visit our country next year. Well, the
best time to visit my country is during the summer, from April to June. It seems sunny all the time and
temperature is around 35 degrees. In addition, the best way for you to meet people aged from 17 to 18 is in
Hanoi capital which is the most modern and busiest city in VN. You can easily find young people everywhere
who like hanging out with their friends to find foreigners to practice English. I am sure that you are welcomed
by the people of my own age who are very sociable and hospitable. I suggest that you should not bring too
much stuff because you can buy them in Vietnam where there are varieties of high-quality clothes at very
reasonable price. If you prefer bringing your own things, my suggestion is summer clothes like shorts, tank top,
skirt, swimsuits. I have my summer holiday in May so I will be available to travel around with you. I will be
your free tour guide, taking you to visit our stunning Hanoi as well as the most attractive beaches and places in
Vietnam. I promise you will really enjoy your trip in our country. I look forward to welcoming you in Vietnam.
Love,

TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

A Canadian friend, Matt, recently visited you and has just sent you a letter. Read part of his letter below.
You mentioned when I was there that you would like to come to my town to study next year. Please let me
know how long you’re thinking of coming for and what would you like to study so I can find information for
you.
Also, if you come in the summer we could do a trip together either to the Rocky Mountains or to Vancouver.
Which would you prefer?
If you like I could arrange for you to share a flat with some friends of mine. Would you be interested?

Write a letter responding to him. You should write at least 120 words. You are not allowed to include your
name.

Dear Matt,
I was glad to receive your letter. I hope you did well at your exam. Was it difficult?
As what I have mentioned last time, I have planed to study in one of the universities in your town in the next
two years. My main subject in university is English so I have interests in the field of intercultural
communication or language analysis. I hope that there will be suitable courses me in there.
What’s more, I’d love to have an adventure to Rocky Mountains because I have heard a lot about it. The idea to
share a flat with your friends is also exciting. It would be really helpful if you send me some information about
this flat.
Hope to hear from you soon.
All the best,
Linda

WRITING TEST 28

TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You are going to stay with your English-speaking friend, Alex, for the weekend. Read part of Alex’s email
below.
It’s great that you can visit me this weekend. A new activity centre has just opened near my house. Shall we
go?
There’s a climbing wall at the centre, or they can take us sailing on the river. The staff at the centre also take
groups into the hills to go mountain biking. Which activity would you prefer to do?
I think we’ll be tired on Saturday evening so maybe we should just stay in and do something. So what do you
think we should do?
I’m so excited about your visit. Can your parents bring you to my house on Friday evening rather than Saturday
morning?

Write an email responding to Alex. You should write at least 120 words. You do not need to include your
name or address.
Answer:

Dear Alex,
I am so glad to recieve your mail last week and I am so thankful for your hospitability for offering me to stay
with your family and you and even join in the new activity centre. It is a great idea for us to go to enjoy our
moments there. Sailing on the river is definitely my preference among three mentioned choices. It is known
that three activities including climbing wall, sailing and going mountain biking can all benefit for our physical
and mental strengths, for example, improving muscle and strengthening the heart. However, I find it dangerous
and potentially fatal in climbing and biking in the high places. While unexpected accidents may occur during
climbing or biking such as cramping that I cannot manage, I can swim so it is possible for me to overcome the
sudden ones. It is obvious that we can easily get tired and even exhausted on Saturday evening after sailing on
the river in the new activity centre. Consequently, it is advisable for us to go for a walk and enjoy traditional
and delicious street foods surrounding your home because I remember that you once told me about great foods
of your hometown such as pizza, spagetti and so forth. Right after that, we can come back your home and
watch TV, listen to jazz music or play card as your favorite. One more thing is that my flight plan has changed
that it will land off on Friday morning that can really fit with your parents' schedule. Therefore, your parents
undoubtedly can pick me up to your house on Friday evening, not Saturday morning as I told you before. Last
but not least, I am so cheerful to enjoy my holiday with your family and you and those mentioned activities.
Are my suggestions suitable for you? I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Lien.

even stay with them for a few days. I have put their name and address below in case you want to write to them.
Why don’t you drop them a line and tell them about yourself and what you are planning to do? Let them know

My name is Jessica, the pen friend Peter must have mentioned to you earlier. Thank you so much for your
generositywhen allowing me to stay in your house in my visit this summer. I am glad to have chance to visit a
new country as well as meet new friend like you.
First of all, I will briefly introduce myself. Now, I’m an English teacher for a secondary school in Ha Noi,
Vietnam. I see myself as a sociable and humorous person so the visit is such a wonderful opportunity for me to
make friends from other cultures and environments. I do not have specific plan what to do in your town so if
you have some interesting suggestions about the thing I can do in there, do not hesitate to tell me.
The semester of my school will end in the end of May so I’d like to visit you in the second week of June. I will
call you two day before my flight to your country.
I’m looking forward to your reply. Hope to see you soon!
Best regards,
Jessica
WRITING TEST 30
TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You have received an email from your English-speaking pen-friend Harry, who is planning to come to your
country for a two-week holiday.

Hi! Great news! I’ve got two weeks free this summer and I’d really like to spend the time touring round your
country. What do you think I should try and see? Another thing, what would be the best way to travel?
I will also need somewhere to stay – but not too expensive, of course. If I do come, will you be free to travel
round with me for some of the time? It would be great if you could.

Write an email responding to Harry. You should write at least 120 words. You do not need to include your
name or address.
Answer:
Dear Harry,
It’s great to hear from you. Vietnam is a beautiful country where you could see lots of wonderful sceneries. If I
were you, I would spend my holiday in the capital city Hanoi. You can spend some time touring round in The
Old Quarter, eating traditional foods along the streets, visiting some famous places of interest such as Hoan
Kiem Lake, Mot Cot Pagoda, and Temple of Literature.
You can travel by bike with the help of Google Maps, but travelling by motorbike taxi is also a good idea for
you. Don’t worry about the accommodation. There are a lot of hostels in Hanoi and the price is not so
expensive.
I’m really happy to join with you in your holiday. When you arrive Hanoi, just call me and I will come to your
place.
Best wishes,
