Assignment 1

a) Provide a sketch of the system

b) Calculate the developed head.

P1 u1² Wp P2 u2²

---- + ----- + z1 + -------- = ------ + ------ + z2 + Hf
gρ 2g g gρ 2g

P1 = 101325Pa
P2 = 350000Pa

Assume that liquid height does not changes, thus u1 = 0

πd²
A2 = ------ = 0.065²*π/4 = 0.003318m²
4

Q=uA
thus u2 = Q/A = (40/0.003318)/3600s = 3.3487m/s

z1 = 8m
z2 = 0m
Hf = 1.5m

Assume that
Gravitational field strength: 9.81m/s²
Density of water is: 1000kg/m³

10.328 + 0 + 8 + DevHead = 35.678 + 0.5715 + 0 + 1.5

Developed head = 19.4215m

c) Using pump curves provided determine the impellor diameter, efficiency, power
required and the net positive suction head. Explain them. What is the vapor pressure of
the cooling water used?

Impellor diameter: 225mm

Efficiency : 56.5%
Brake Power : 3.5kW
NPSHR : 1.1m

Impellor size is defined in mm, it is usually the diameter of impellor. In the industry,
round objects often have their size defined by their diameter.

Efficiency of the pump is how well is the power supplied utilized. For this assignment,
the pump is not very efficient since 43.5% of the power is wasted. This value can be
determined from the pump curves, developed head or from using both hydraulic power &
brake power.

Brake power determines the amount of work done per time, is usually determined from
the mass flow rate & ideal work done of the pump.

NPSHR is a required parameter for pumps in order to determine the point where it would
cavitate. Cavitation can cause serious damage to pump impellors. At any point in time
NPSHA should always be higher then NPSHR. NPSHA can be calculated. NPSHR is
determined by tests, it is assumed that NPSHA = NPSHR when cavitation occurs and the
NPSHA is determined to find NPSHR.

Vapor pressure of water at 27degC is 26.976mmHg or 3596.494272Pa (absolute)

d) Would this pump cavitate if the pump centre line is located 5m above the water level
in the tank?

P1 u1² Wp P2 u2²

---- + ----- + z1 + -------- = ------ + ------ + z2 + Hf
gρ 2g g gρ 2g

Assume that the other parameters are still the same, except that the height changes.

P1 Pv
NPSHA = ----- - Hf(suction) - 5 - ------
gρ gρ

Pv = 3596.494272Pa

NPSHA = 10.328 – 0.4(1.5) – 5 – 0.3666 = 4.3614m

NPSHR is 1.1m, when the pump centre line is 5m above the water height in the tank, the
NHSPA of the system is 4.3614m which is still above the required suction head, thus the
pump will not cavitate.

Assignment 2

Q1: If the maintenance done was on the bearings, are the bearings used of the same
material(what kind of metal), size and type(plastic cover/metal cover/country of origin)?

Q2: Is the oil in the sump enough or is the correct type of oil used?

Q3: Are the pump parts fitted properly? Was anything loose or impellor incorrectly
spaced?

Q4: Could there be foreign objects or formation of solids in the cooling water tower or
pipe line?

Q5: Are the pump parts that were not replaced during the maintenance inspected for
damages before operation?
