1- Water contained in a closed, rigid tank, initially saturated vapor at 200°C, is cooled to 100°C. (a) Determine
the initial and final pressures, each in bar. (b) Locate the initial and final states on sketches of the T-υ and P-υ
diagrams. Answers: Pinitial = 15.54 bar , Pfinal = 1.014 bar
2- A two-phase liquid–vapor mixture of water with an initial quality of 25% is contained in a piston–cylinder
assembly as shown. The mass of the piston is 40 kg, and its diameter is
10 cm. The atmospheric pressure of the surroundings is 1 bar. The
initial and final positions of the piston are shown on the diagram. As the
water is heated, the pressure inside the cylinder remains constant until
the piston hits the stops. Heat transfer to the water continues until its
pressure is 3 bar. Friction between the piston and the cylinder wall is
negligible. Determine (a) the initial pressure inside the cylinder, (b) the
mass of the water contained in the system, (c) the temperature when the
piston first reaches the stops (d) and the final temperature. Show the
process on a sketch of T-υ and P-υ diagrams. List two extensive and
four intensive properties of the water. Answers: (a) Pinitial = 1.5 bar , (b) m = 2.703 × 10 -4 kg (c) 156.9°C (d) Tfinal = 578°C
Exercise
Water contained in a closed, rigid tank, initially saturated vapor at 160°C, is heated to 400°C. (a) Determine the
initial and final pressures, each in bar. (b) Show the process on a sketch of the T-υ and P-υ diagrams.
Answers: (a) Pinitial = 6.178 bar , Pfinal = 9.99 bar
