READING
T here’s an old saying that claims you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. While it’s true that people shouldn’t, it’s also
true that they do. So, how can you navigate the do’s and don’ts of modern dressing? It isn’t usually difficult at work
because you may have to wear a uniform—if you are a nurse, a police officer, or even a store assistant. And even if you
can choose what to wear, you probably have clear dress codes from your employer. But what about in your social life?
Can you just wear what you want, wherever you go?
T he answer to that is definitely “No, you can’t.” Let’s have a look at some of the reasons why. Well, lounge wear seems
a good place to start. T hese are the clothes many of us hang out in at home in the evening and then sleep in. I put on
PJs as soon as I get home, just to be comfy. And that’s fine. What isn’t fine is nipping to the supermarket in your
slippers and housecoat or doing the school run in your nightwear. It doesn’t look good, even if it’s convenient.
T here are more serious issues when it comes to things like social occasions that require some kind of formal wear.
Perhaps, your workplace has organized a night at the opera? Ripped jeans or a short dress are not appropriate. You
need to dress up a little—at the very least, smart casual clothes and probably proper formal evening wear such as a
cocktail dress or a tuxedo. Weddings are another nightmare. It can be fun to wear something wild to a wedding, but
you should ask yourself if the happy couple will approve and remember that it’s not polite to draw people’s attention
away from the bride on her big day.
It may sound surprising, but it turns out that there are, in fact, very few occasions where you can let your hair down
when it comes to clothing. We have dress codes for many different occasions and situations, and while it might be fun
to break the fashion rules sometimes, it’s still worth remembering that people do judge a book by its cover.
