Introduction
The following assignment is related to listening activities about the text “Republic of
Peakoilia”. These activities can be executed during lessons in order to make students
develop their listening skills, comprehension of the English language (vocabulary
acquisition); as well as the pronunciation of words.
In pre-listening activities, the aims can be: setting the context, motivate the students,
activate schemata and pre-learning vocabulary.
In while reading activities, the aims can be: to reinforce vocabulary, to make students
interact and to develop speaking skills.
In After reading activities, the principal aim is to provide feedback, and correct probable
students errors.

Republic of Peakoilia
Language: English
The Republic of Peakoilia is a small island, the south of the island is developed, but in
the north there is a lot of poverty and unemployment. Many businesses on the island are
closing because people do not have much money to spend. Peakoilia’s main industry is
oil, but the currency oil wells are starting to run out. Peakoilia schools and hospitals are
becoming old and the opposition parties are complaining about the conditions their
working in. Traditionally, people have made a lot of money from tourism, but at the
moment, the number of tourist is falling. The government of Expandia, Peakoilia;s
nearest neighbor, recently said that Peakoilia was “one of our islands”. These are
difficult times for Peakoilia and the government has to make some important decisions.

Listening activities about the text “Republic of peakoilia”
1. Before Listening:
1.1. Brainstorm (activate schemata): Ask students to brainstorm what they know
about small island nations, economic activities, and the challenges regarding to
unemployment and poverty on the country. Then, have them share their ideas with a
partner or in a small group, and write their ideas on the board. This activity will help
activate their prior knowledge and generate interest on the topic.
1.2. Predictions: Ask students to read the title of the text and make predictions about
the content. Have them share their predictions with a partner or in a small group,
and then ask them to write the predictions. After listening to the text, they can check
their predictions. This activity will help students focus on the main topic and
purpose of the text.
1.3. Vocabulary Matching: Provide a list of vocabulary words related to the text
and ask students to match them with their definitions. This activity will help
students become familiar with the new vocabulary that they will encounter while
listening.
2.During Listening:
2.1. Note-taking: Provide a template for note-taking and ask students to take notes
on key points such as the population, capital city, language, main industries, and
challenges faced by Peakoilia. This activity will help students stay focused and
engaged while listening and retain important information.
2.2. Fill in the Blanks: Provide a transcript of the audio with some missing words,
and ask students to fill in the gaps while listening. This activity will help students
practice their listening comprehension and improve their vocabulary.

2.3. Picture Inferring: Show students a picture related to the text and ask them to
infer about what they will hear in the text. This activity will help students make
connections between the visual and auditory information and improve their listening
skills.
2.4. Jigsaw activities: The teacher can divide the class into two groups, after that,
play the first part of the text to group 1 about: Population, capital city, Language,
currency, Main industries and army. Then the second group can enter to listen the
2nd part of the text about the specific description of Peakoilia.
In the end, the two groups can share information, about the contents they have listened.
2.5. Guiding questions: these type of questions can allow students to develop levels
of thinking, in order to find key details inside the text.
Example: a) What is the Pealkoilia’s main industry, and what is the currency in
Peakoilia?
3.After Listening
3.1. Group Discussion: Divide students into groups and ask them to discuss
the challenges faced by Peakoilia and suggest solutions to improve the
economy and infrastructure. This activity will help students develop their
critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
3.2. Writing Prompt: Ask students to write a short essay on the economic
challenges faced by small island nations and propose solutions based on the
case of Peakoilia. This activity will help students practice their writing skills
and apply what they have learned from the text.
3.3. Role Play: Divide students into pairs and ask them to role-play a
conversation between a government official and a local resident of Peakoilia
discussing the economic challenges and potential solutions. This activity will
help students practice their speaking and listening skills and develop their
comprehension skills.
3.4. Provide feedback: after the answers, the teacher must provide a
feedback about the student’s answers.

3. Conclusion
The activities of listening presented on the assignment can be very helpful to the
practise of English language. According to Jeremy hammer the listening activities must
follow certain principles, such as: the quality of the tape recorder, the tape and a good
speaker, with that, we came to the conclusion, that, the teacher must take in
consideration the quality and efficacy of the materials used in classroom.
To conclude, we agreed that, the key factor of success on listening activities, are the
designing of the activities, the material’s preparation before classes and motivating
activities; in order to make students interested in the lessons.
