Answers

1 When Calcium oxide i.e. quick lime is added to water filled in a

bucket, it reacts vigorously with water to produce slaked lime
(calcium hydroxide) releasing a large amount of heat.
Quick lime (calcium oxide, CaO) readily forms calcium hydroxide
(slaked lime) as shown:

CaO+H2O→Ca(OH)2

2 The reaction in which oxygen combines with other elements

or compounds is known as an oxidation reaction.
For example, burning of hydrogen is an oxidation process in
which hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water.
2 H2 (g) + O2g --------> 2 H2O
Oxidation reactions are exothermic.
3.
• Photochemical reactions- A chemical reaction take place by the
action of light energy. Such reactions are called photochemical
reactions.
• Example - Decomposition of silver chloride in the presence of light
is a photochemical reaction.

4. Decomposition reaction: The reaction in

which a compound splits up into two or more
simpler substances is called a decomposition
reaction.
It is represented as: XY ----> X + Y.
Example: When calcium carbonate is heated, it
decomposes to give calcium oxide and carbon
dioxide.

CaCO3−→−−HearCaO+CO2
Calcium carbonate −−−→ Calcium oxide + Carbon
dioxide

Activity: When potassium chlorate is heated in

the presence of manganese dioxide catalyst, it
decomposes to give potassium chloride and
oxygen:
In this decomposition reaction, a single
compound, potassium chlorate, is splitting up
into two simpler substances, potassium chloride
and oxygen. It is used for preparing oxygen gas
in the laboratory.

5. Respiration is considered as an exothermic

reaction because in respiration oxidation of
glucose takes place which produces large amount
of heat energy.
C 6 H 12 O 6 ( aq ) +6 O 2 ( g ) → 6 CO 2 ( g ) +6 H 2

O (l) + Energy.

6. 3Fe + 4H2O = Fe3O4 + 4H4

MnO2 + 4HCl = MnCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O
2HNO3 + Ca(OH)2 = Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O

7.
8. The two observations suggest that a chemical
reaction has taken place are:
(i) Gas is evolved.

For example, when potassium reacts with water to give

potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas is evolved.
2K(s)+ 2H2O(l) → 2KOH + H2 ↑2𝐾(𝑠)+ 2𝐻2𝑂(𝑙) → 2𝐾𝑂𝐻 + 𝐻2 ↑

(ii) A precipitate is formed.

For example, when potassium iodide solution is added

to a solution of lead nitrate, a yellow precipitate of lead
iodide is formed.
2KI (aq) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) → PbI2 (s) + 2KNO3 (aq)

9. When silver chloride is left exposed in sunlight, it decomposed to

black metallic color silver and chlorine gas is evolved.

2AgCl 2Ag(s)+Cl(g)

This is called as Photo decomposition Reaction

10. Reactions in which two or more substances

combine to form a new compound are called
combination reactions.
Example- combustion of magnesium in air, where
magnesium combines with oxygen to form magnesium
oxide.
2Mg(s)+O2 (g) → 2MgO(s)+Heat

11.

12. The difference between single displacement and double displacement

reaction is as follows,

Single displacement reaction Double displacement reaction

A displacement reaction is one in which a more The reaction in which there is an exchange of ions
active element displaces a less active element between the reactants is called a double
from its compound. displacement reaction.
The general reaction is, A+B-C→A-C+B The general reaction is, AB+CD→AC+CB
Example: Reaction between Zinc Example: Reaction between Potassium iodide
granules and Copper sulphate and Lead nitrate

• The reaction of zinc granules with copper • The reaction of potassium iodide with lead
sulphate (blue colour), reacts to give Zinc nitrate solution gives potassium nitrate and
sulphate and Copper metal as the product. lead iodide as the product.
• Zinc is more reactive than copper thereby • Since the exchange of ions take place
displacing copper from the copper between two reactants. So, this is an
sulphate solution. example of double displacement reaction.

The balenced chemical reaction is as follows, The chemical reaction is as follows,

Zn+CuSO4(aq)→ZnSO4(aq)+Cu(s)Copper KI + Pb(NO3)2 KNO3 + PbI2
