• Objective(s): To make a Book Self as shown in Figure, from the given wooden planks of size
30x20x418mm and 8 mm Plywood.
• Introduction: Carpentry is the process of shaping Timber, using hand tools. The products
produced are used in building construction, such as doors and windows, furniture
manufacturing, patterns for molding in foundries, etc. Carpentry work mainly involves
the joining together of wooden pieces and finishing the surfaces after shaping them.
Hence, the term joining is also used commonly for carpentry. A student studying the
fundamentals of wood working has to know about timber and other carpentry materials,
wood working tools, carpentry operations and the method of making common types of
joints.
● Materials Required: - Wood planks, Nails, Plywood (250x250x8mm), Adhesive, etc.
● Apparatus and tool required: -
Measuring and marking tools: - Steel scale, try square, bevel square, marking gauge, mortise
gauge, scriber, marker pen, Vernier caliper etc.
Cutting tools: - Cross cut saw, key hole saw/compass saw, firmer chisel, dove tail chisel,
mortise chisel, set of files and hacksaw etc.
Boring tools: - Hand drilling machine, hole saw, gimlet.
Planning tools: - Wooden jack plane, metal jack plane and planner machine.
Striking tools: - Claw hammer, ball peen hammer, and mallet.
Holding and supporting tools: - Bench vice, carpentry vice, C-clamp.
Firmer chisel, mortise chisel, rip saw, mini saw, pencil and mallet
● Sequence of operations
1. The given reaper is checked to ensure its correct size.
2. The reaper is firmly clamped in the carpenter's vice and any two adjacent faces are planed by the jack
plane and the two faces are checked for squareness with the try square.
3. Marking gauge is set and lines are drawn at 10 mm on 30mm width respectively.
4. The excess material is first chiseled out with firmer chisel and then planed to correct size.
5. Cut the plywood as given dimensions in drawing by ripsaw and bring to correct dimensions using iron
jack plane.
6. The mating dimensions of the wooden member plywood are marked using scale and marking gauge.
7. Using the mini saw, the portions to be removed are cut in both the pieces, followed by sawing and
chiseling.
8. The ends of both the parts are chiseled to the exact lengths.
9. A fine finishing is given to the parts, if required so that, proper fitting is obtained.
10. The parts are fitted to obtain a slightly tight joint by applying wood adhesive and nailing keeping two
parts 90 0 to each other.
11. Deburr the edges and surfaces using hand file and jack plane.
● Precautions:
(1) Must wear proper safety shoes, safety gloves and apron.
(2) Wood should be free from moisture.
(3) Marking is done without parallax error
(4) Care should be taken while chiseling
(5) Use the proper holding device to hold the sample
(6) Follow proper safety protocol during the operation.
● Conclusion: (What new knowledge(s) one can learn by doing this experiment. Write short
not on application of Carpentry.
