c. Evaluate a text based on a given guided questions.

What is critical reading?


- Critical reading is an analytic activity which involves the reader by
asking questions about the text and the author’s claim.
- Critical reading is a more active way of reading. It is a deeper and
more complex engagement with a text.
- When we read critically, we use our critical thinking skills to question
both the text and our own argument and other’s interpretation of it.

EXAMPLE: WE READ LIKE A DETECTIVE

Look for clues.


Ask questions.
Make your case.
Prove it.
Reasoning
- As defined by Merriam Webster dictionary, it is an act of giving
statements for justification and explanation. It is the ability of someone
to defend something by giving out reasons.
Remember that critical reading is not meant to criticize but to assess the validity
of textual evidence.

G. Discussing Steps Used in Critical Reading as Reasoning

#2 1. Identifying Assertions
- Identify by a common type of assertion such as fact, convention,
opinion, and preference.
2. Formulating counterclaim
- Counterclaims are made to rebut a previous claim.
3. Determining evidence
- Evidence is the details given by the authors to support his/her claims.

Example

You are asking your father for an android cellphone, that is your claim. Then
your father answers you “no, you can’t!” this is his counterclaim. He might say
that you already have a cellphone. Therefore, when you are going to
formulate a reason for the counterclaim, you should state the reason why you
are asking for an android cellphone. You might say that you could use it in
your online classes because android cellphone would be very useful in your
studies.
H. Developing CONVINCE ME!

The teacher will group the students and provide each group a topic. There
will be assigned judges in each group. The students will be given time to
brainstorm and afterwards, one speaker will be allowed to convince the judge
by giving their own reasons.

K. Evaluating Maintain the same group: Read the passage carefully. Underline the claim,
learning circle the evidence, and box the reasoning that you can find.

Crecencian T.V.L senior high school graduates are capable to joining the
workforce and being globally competitive skilled workers since passing the
National Competency II examination is the result of the in-depth training that
they had developed while in school. Crecencian T.V.L instructors are highly
skilled in their field of specialization. They are NC III & IV holders and have
years of experience in the industry before joining the academe. Many of the
skilled graduates are now hired by different corporations and some of them
continue their college education in connection with their chosen strand.

L. Assignment Find an editorial either from the newspaper or from the internet then try to
evaluate and analyze the text. Use the guided questions to answer. Write your
answer on a short bond paper and attach the chosen article on your answer
sheet.
