Pavement

⮚ A road pavement is a structure which have several

layers bounded together placed on the sub grade to
provide a smooth riding surface for the vehicle . Ex:-
Cement concrete road, bituminous road etc.
⮚ Pavement should have good flexural strength and
rigidity
⮚ It also protect the sub grade from surface water
4

Different component of pavement

1. SURFACE COURSE
2. BASE COURSE
3. SUB BASE COURSE
4. SOIL SUBGRADE
5
6

1. SURFACE COURSE
⮚ Surface course is also known as wearing course
⮚ It is top most/upper layer of the pavement
⮚ It's thicknessgenerally25-50mm
2. BASE COURSE
⮚ It provides or works as a support layer to the surface
course
⮚ It transfer loads from wearing course to sub base course
⮚ Minimum thickness of base course is 100mm
7

1. SUB BASE COURSE

⮚ It works as a support layer othe surface course to the
base course
⮚ It is an intermediate and have function similar to base
course
⮚ It consist of broken stone , broken brunt bricks.
⮚ It improves the bearing capacity of soil sub grade
2. Soil sub grade
⮚ foundation for the road pavement.
⮚ It is made of locally available natural soil
8

Purpose of pavement

⮚ It provides smooth surface.

⮚ It also protect the soil sub grade from surface
sub grade.
⮚ Pavement transfer the load which is coming
from vehicle to soil sub grade.
⮚ The main purpose is to carry heavy wheel loads
of vehicular traffic.

1. FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
2. RIGID PAVEMENT
10
11

FleXiBle PaveMent

⮚ pavement are generally designed for 15 years

or more
⮚ In this pavement, pavement layers have low or
negligible flexural strength and rigidity
⮚ These Loads are transfer from grain to the lower
layers from upper layers.
12

Advantages of flexible pavement

⮚ Initial cost is low.
⮚ The flexible pavement is smooth.
⮚ Repair of flexible pavement is easy.
⮚ Addition thickness added any time
⮚ Traffic is open just after the construction of flexible pavement.
Disadvantages of flexible pavement

⮚ Limited flexibility
⮚ Higher maintenance cost.
⮚ Shorter life span under heavy use
⮚ Damage by oil and shorter chemicals
13

Components of flexible pavement

1. Seal coat
2. Surface course
3. Tack course
4. Binder course
5. Prime coat
6. Base course
7. Sub-base course
8. Sub grade
14

1. Seal coat
This is a very thin treatment that is applied to the
surface In order to give a skid resistance and
waterproof finish.

2. Tack course
It is a low viscous bitumen emulsion
(60%bitumen+40% kerosene).A tack coat is an
adhesive material applied Between layer of asphalt
concrete that is laid down for road construction
15

3. Binder course
This is a very thin treatment that is applied to
the surface In order to give a skid resistance
and waterproof finish.

4. Prime coat
viscosity asphalt to a granular base in
preparation for an initial layer (or surface course
layer)of asphalt
16

Construction of layers of flexible pavement

Surface

Construction of sub grade

⮚ Removal of top soil(if not suitable for sub grade or to Match
the level)
⮚ Removal of vegetation and other harmful material.Lay down
the soil in layer of 266 mm (max.)
⮚ Compaction of layer(after compaction max. depth should be
200 mm)
⮚ Further layer of soil.
⮚ Compaction of layer
17

Construction of sub-base course

⮚ Sub-base layer is constructed on the top of the prepared

sub grade.
⮚ The sub base material is spread to uniform thickness and
specific cross slope.
⮚ The moisture content of the material is check And
additional quantity of water required to Bring up to the
optimum moisture content is sprinkled at a uniform rate.
⮚ The loose sub base layer is compacted by roller.
18

Rigid pavement

⮚ These Pavements have high flexural strength and rigidity.

⮚ These pavements are made of Portland cement concrete
(p.c.c)
⮚ These roads are designed for 30 years or more
19

Conclusion

⮚ In this way load transfer mechanism occurs.

⮚ Almost 95% pavement are flexible pavements.
⮚ Therefore , flexible pavements are only placed Where
under lying strata has good load bearing capacity
properties.
