-Jose Rizal was a Filipino polymath, nationalist, and patriot who was the principal proponent of the
reform movement in the Philippines during the late 19th century. During his years in Manila as a
student, Rizal was actively involved in a variety of activities, including:

1. •ACADEMICS: Rizal was a brilliant student and excelled in all his subjects. He was particularly
well-versed in philosophy, languages, and the arts.
2. •LITERARY WRITING: Rizal was a prolific writer and began publishing poems and essays in his
early teens. He also wrote two novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which are
considered to be national treasures of the Philippines.
3. •TRAVEL: Rizal traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia during his time as a student. He
used his travels to learn about different cultures and to broaden his horizons.
4. •MEDICAL STUDIES: Rizal enrolled in the University of Santo Tomas to study medicine. He

2) How did Rizal become a freemason? What motivated him in joining the Masonry?

-Jose Rizal became a freemason in 1883 while he was studying in Madrid, Spain. He was initiated into
Acacia Lodge, the first Filipino masonic lodge in Europe, by Antonio Luna, a fellow Filipino student and
activist.

Rizal was motivated to join Freemasonry by its ideals of freedom, equality, and brotherhood. He
believed that Freemasonry could help him to achieve his goals of reforming Philippine society and
achieving independence from Spanish colonial rule.

3) How and why did Rizal join the propaganda movement? Describe his growth as a propagandist.

-José Rizal joined the Propaganda Movement in the 1880s in response to the abuses of Spanish colonial
rule in the Philippines. He believed that the only way to achieve true reform was to expose the injustices
of Spanish rule to the world and to educate Filipinos about their rights.

4) Enumerate Rizal’s works/writings while pursuing his higher education indicating a brief description for
each written work.
1. Mi Primera Inspiracion (My First Inspiration) (1874) - A poem dedicated to his mother, Doña
Teodora Alonso, who was released from prison that same year. It expresses the young Rizal's
admiration and love for his mother.
2. El Combate: Urbiztondo, Terror de Jolo (The Battle: Urbiztondo, Terror of Jolo) (1875) - A poem
