1st Month of School
School starts in the middle of the month, so I have only two weeks to teach.
• Teaching & Practicing Procedures
Week 3 • Welcome Activities
• Back to School Journal Prompts
• Establish weekly writing choice boards procedure.
Week 4 • Set up writing notebooks together.
• Obtain a writing sample.
• Start to work on improving sentences.

2nd Month of School


• Continue to work on improving sentences.
Week 1 • Start proofreading/editing instruction and practice.
• Review the process for writing excellent sentences.
Week 2 • Finish proofreading/editing instruction and practice.
• Work on writing simple paragraphs.
Weeks 3-4 • Introduce the process of color-coding paragraphs.

3rd Month of School


• Teach students to plan and write body paragraphs.
Weeks 1-2 • Reinforce color-coding
• Practice planning and writing body paragraphs with
multiple prompts.
• Teach students to write introduction paragraphs.
Weeks 3-4 • Combine introduction paragraphs with planning and
writing body paragraphs.
• Reinforce color-coding
• Teach students to use transition teams in their
writing.

4th Month of School
• Teach conclusion paragraphs.
Weeks 1-2 • Students write their first full five paragraph essays
with teacher guidance.
• Write 5 paragraph essays with a variety of basic
Weeks 3-4 prompts.
• Students proofread/edit other students’ essays.
• Watch for patterns of mistakes or misunderstandings
among your students and include 5-10 minute mini-
lessons to address those issues.

5th Month of School


Our winter break falls during this month, so I only have two teaching weeks.
Because these two weeks are packed with school-wide activities and parties, I
don’t start anything new.

6th Month of School
• Right after winter break, I teach the research report
Week 1 process. I teach the research process for about a
week.
• I give students some time to research their topics
while I’m available to help.
• Students complete their research reports, including
Week 2 outlines, citing sources, etc.
• Students give 1-2 minute oral presentations on their
research topics. Students are not allowed to read
their reports. They must use eye contact and quickly
tell us what they enjoyed about their topics.
• It’s time to dive back into five paragraph essays!
Week 3 • Review the five paragraph essay writing process.
• Ask students to write an essay using a simple prompt.
• Allow pairs of students to proofread/edit each other’s
essays.
• Start opinion writing this week. You'll find that students
Week 4 will slide into opinion writing easily because they
already know five paragraph essay structure.

7th Month of School
• Continue working on opinion writing. By the end of this
Week 1 week, students should be able to write an opinion
essay using a prompt.
• During these two weeks, we work on narrative writing.
Weeks 2-3 By the end of the second week, students should be
able to write a narrative essay using a prompt.
• Teach the process of writing an informative essay.
Week 4

8th Month of School


• Continue working on informative writing. By the end of
Week 1 this week, students should be able to write an
informative essay using a prompt.
• Teach students how to write an essay using paired
Weeks 2-3 passages.
• First, dissect the prompt.
• Second, closely read the paired texts.
• Third, organize thoughts using the prompt.

• Now that students know the process of using paired
Week 4 passages, I provide a set of paired passages and ask
students to answer prompts in a variety of genres,
like opinion, narrative, informative, poetry, and etc.

9th Month of School
• Continue working on using paired passages to write in
Week 1 a variety of genres.
• Talk about last minute standardized testing tips to
help students with their writing tests.
• The rest of the month is taken up with standardized
Weeks 2-4 testing, so I do a lot of review activities, freewriting,
and etc.
• Suspense Stories are fun writing activities that
students enjoy during our break from regular
instruction.

10th Month of School


During this month, we are wrapping up the school year and participating in activities and
field trips. There’s not much time to teach but the time I do have is spent reviewing and
completing fun writing assignments.
