Modals 'Must' and 'Have to‟

We use 'must' and 'have/has to' to express obligations.

S + must + V1 (+)

S + must be + Adjective/noun/adverb

„Must‟ is the basic and most direct way of saying something is

compulsory. It means you have no choice but to do (or not do) an action.
We can only use „must‟ in the present form to describe a general or
permanent obligation, or an obligation in the near future. The structure of
„must‟ is easy because it is the same for every subject.

Examples:
 Due to Covid-19, we must wear mask and use handsanitizer.
 We must clean the house every day.
 Students must be disciplined to achieve success
 They must not be noisy in the classroom.
 He must study harder if he wants to pass the exam.
Must we obey the school rules? Yes, we must. No, we must not.
30 | E n g l i s h f o r y o u
„Have to‟ has the same meaning as „must‟ and is used to express
obligations. However, „have to‟ is much more flexible than „must‟ because
we can use it in the past, the present and the future. When „must‟ used for
general obligation, „have to‟ more common than must.

 We have to do the shopping because the cupboards are empty.

 She has to take two trains and a bus to get to work every day.
 You have to practice if you want to be fluent.
 Motorcyclists have to wear a helmet.
 Driver have to have driver‟s licenses

Reading -
TEXT 1

help each other. We must speak to our family members politely. When
we make a mistake, we must apologize immediately. Besides, we must
keep our house clean. We must clean it every day, so it is comfortable to
stay.

TEXT 2
Road users have to obey traffic regulations. They have to follow the
traffic light's rules. They have to drive on the left side of the road and
pass other vehicles from the right side. Drivers and motorcyclists have
to have driver's licenses. Besides, motorcyclists have to wear helmets.
People who ignore the traffic rule really endanger themselves and other
road users.
