Extension &
Compensating Wire
⁍ What is Extension and Compensating Cable?
A thermocouple is a self-powered device that are used to measure wide range of temperature. It consists
of two different conductors that contact each other at one or more spots where temperature difference is
experienced.
Then, two conductors create voltage that are converted to temperature readings in the control box.
Thermocouple utilizes ‘extension cables’ to measure temperature from its body to the control box, where
the measurements are calculated. Since extension cables are made of the same exact material as thermocouples,
they yield accurate reading results. However, extension cables are fairly expensive and new cables were
invented to ‘compensate’ the cost; they are called ‘compensating cables’. Compensating cables are made
of materials that easily and quickly transfer temperatures. Copper, iron and constantan are main materials
used to make compensating cable. Though there are some limitations on accuracy, the range of errors is
definitely not that significant. Places (such as plants) that require very accurate temperature readings tend
to use extension cable; while others look for compensating cables for cost efficiencies.

Insulation & Jacket

③④ Material of Insulation and Jacket

PVC coated cables are broadly used due to its relatively low cost, chemical
PVC resistance and workability. Effectively replacing rubber materials.

HR-PVC coated cables performs the same with PVC, but heat resistance.
HR-PVC They have the heat resistance of 90℃.

PE/XLPE are highly resistant to weather and chemical substance.

PE/XLPE
XLPE has the heat resistance of 90℃.

Glass fiber materials are known to have great heat and chemical resistance.
They are widely used for traditional high temperature insulation.
GLASS - FIBER Although glass fiber gets poor in humid surroundings, it become moisture
resistant when other sheathed materials (such as heat treatment, silicone,
and/or synthetic resins) are added.

Silicone rubber coated cables are widely loved for its high quality material.
SILICONE Having similar properties as natural rubber, silicone is strongly resistant
against chemical, oil, temperature, and air change.

Teflon coating is definitely the top coating materials in heat, chemical,

electric insulation, other frequent resistance, and temperature chance.
TEFLON
Teflon coating can bear great physical power, high voltage as well as high
currents.
