Quarter 4 – Module 4:
Solving Problems
Involving Volume of a Cube
and Rectangular Prism
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for
you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or
if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or
facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

Finding the volume of an object can help us to determine the amount

required to fill that object, like the amount of water needed to fill a bottle, an
aquarium or a water tank. The volume of an object is measured in cubic units
such as cubic centimeters, cubic inch, cubic foot, cubic meter, etc.

The module is about:

• Solving Routine and Non-routine Problems Involving Volume of a Cube
and Rectangular Prism in Real-life Situations Using Appropriate
Strategies and Tools. M5ME-IVe-83

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. solve routine and non-routine problems involving volume of a cube and

rectangular prism. M5ME-IVe-83; and
2. apply it in real-life situations.

1

Solving Routine and
Lesson Non-Routine Problems
Involving Volume of a Cube
1 or Rectangular Prism in
Real-life Situations Using
Appropriate Strategies and Tools

When we are asked to find an amount that will occupy space and not just
a surface, we are being introduced to another application of measurement
which is the Volume, we can find the volume using the routine and non-
routine solution.

What’s In

I. Directions: Give the appropriate units of measure of volume for the

following objects: ( mm³, cm³, dm³, m³ ). Write your answers on a sheet of
paper.

1. Soap box
2. Container van
3. Aquarium
4. Table
5. Dice

II. Directions: Change these units to larger or smaller units. Write your
answers on a sheet of paper.

1. 6700 dm3 = ______ m3

2. 28 dm3 = ______ cm3
3. 11500 cm3 = ______ m3
4. 4 m3 = ______ cm3
5. 8m3 = ______ dm3

Notes to the Teacher
Now is the time for you to guide your learners to find out
the easy way in solving routine and non-routine problem
involving volume of a cube and rectangular prism. As a teacher,
it is your task to help them develop their problem - solving
ability. This skill may apply in real-life situation.

What’s New

1. Do you know what is routine and non-routine problem?

2. Do you know how to solve routine and non-routine problem
Involving volume of a cube or rectangular prism in real-life situation?
3. What are the different steps in solving routine and non-routine
problem?

Problem:

We can solve this problem in two ways:

A. By means of drawing :

A wooden box is 12 cm long, 9 cm wide, and 2 cm high, how many

cubic cm can it hold?

12 cm
9 cm

2 cm

4
Questions:
1. What is the shape of the wooden box?
2. How long is the box? how about it’s width? height?
3. How many cubes does the wooden box hold?
4. How do we find the answer to the question?
5. What do we call this strategy?

B. Using the 4-step plan in solving a problem:

1. Understand
- Know what is asked. - The number of cube it can hold.
- Know the given facts. - 12 cm long, 19c m wide, 2 cm
high

2. Plan
- Determine the operation - Multiplication
or formula to use. 𝑉 =𝑙×𝑤×ℎ

3. Solve
- Show how the solution is - 𝑉 =𝑙×𝑤×ℎ
done. = 12 cm × 9 cm × 2 cm
= 216 𝑐m3

4. Check and Look Back

- Verify if the answer is - Use inverse operation.
correct. 216 ÷ 2 = 108
108 ÷ 9 = 12
The answer is correct.

What is It

A non-routine problem is any complex problem that requires some

degree of creativity or originality to solve. Non-routine problems typically do
not have an immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Often times,
these problems can be solved in multiple ways such as drawings, making
table, illustrations, numberlines, pictures and others. While, routine
problem can be solved using the 4-step plan.

5

2. Plan
- Determine the operation - Multiplication
or formula to use. - 𝑉 =𝑙×𝑤×ℎ
3. Solve
- Show how the solution is - 𝑉 =𝑙×𝑤×ℎ
done. = 14m × 10m × 2m
= 280m3
4. Check and Look Back
- Verify if the answer is - Use inverse operation.
correct. 280 ÷ 2 = 140
140 ÷ 10 = 14
The answer is correct.

7
Problem No. 4: Cube (Routine)
