NATURAL DISASTER

COVID-19 Increases Suffering of Children in Conflict

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 25 (IPS) - The current coronavirus

pandemic is having a profound affect on children in conflict
zones -- with girls especially being at higher risk of violence
and sexual health concerns.

"For adolescent girls specifically, these disruptions can have

profound consequences, including increased rates of
pregnancy and child, early, and forced marriage," Shannon
Kowalski, director of advocacy and policy at the International
Women's Health Coalition (IWHC), told IPS.

Kowalski shared her concerns this week after an open debate

on children and armed conflict at the United Nations, where
experts shared the progress made in the efforts to pull
children out of conflict-ridden circumstances, as well as how
the current pandemic has made the issue more complex.

After Prime Minister Modi’s announcement of a Rs 20 trillion

revival package, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s
elucidation of the measures in five instalments, the response
was dismal. Sensex crashed by 1,069 points on Monday.
Goldman Sachs forecast that GDP growth this year would
crash to –5%. Former chief statistician Pronab Sen felt it
might be –9%.
Alas, the package is a sedative to ease the pain, not a
stimulus that will revive a crashing economy. Sedatives have
their use.

Physical Activity and Nutrition

Research indicates that staying physically active can help prevent or delay
certain diseases, including some cancers, heart disease and diabetes, and
also relieve depression and improve mood.

Overweight and Obesity

Being overweight or obese increases your chances of dying from
hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder
disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, dyslipidemia and
endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
Tobacco
Tobacco is the single greatest preventable cause of illness and premature
death in the U.S. Tobacco use is now called "Tobacco dependence disease."

Substance Abuse
Substance abuse usually means drugs and alcohol. These are two areas we
don't often associate with seniors, but seniors, like young people, may self-
medicate using legal and illegal drugs and alcohol, which can lead to serious
health consequences. In addition, seniors may deliberately or unknowingly
mix medications and use alcohol.

HIV/AIDS
Between 11 and 15% of U.S. AIDS cases occur in seniors over age 50.
Between 1991 and 1996, AIDS in adults over 50 rose more than twice as fast
as in younger adults.

Mental Health
Dementia is not part of aging. Dementia can be caused by disease, reactions
to medications, vision and hearing problems, infections, nutritional
imbalances, diabetes, and renal failure.

Injury and Violence

Among seniors, falls are the leading cause of injuries, hospital admissions for
trauma, and deaths due to injury. One in every three seniors (age 65 and
older) will fall each year.

Environmental Quality
Even though pollution affects all of us, government studies have indicated that
low-income, racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to live in areas where
they face environmental risks.

Immunization
Influenza and pneumonia and are among the top 10 causes of death for older
adults. Emphasis on Influenza vaccination for seniors has helped.

Access to Health Care

Seniors frequently don't monitor their health as seriously as they should. While
a shortage of geriatricians has been noted nationwide, URMC has one of the
largest groups of geriatricians and geriatric specialists of any medical
community in the country.
GLOBAL ACTIVITIES
As the world’s only truly universal global organization,
the United Nations has become the foremost forum to
address issues that transcend national boundaries and
cannot be resolved by any one country acting alone.

To its initial goals of safeguarding peace, protecting human

rights, establishing the framework for international justice and
promoting economic and social progress, in the seven decades
since its creation the United Nations has added on new
challenges, such as climate change, refugees and AIDS.

While conflict resolution and peacekeeping continue to be among

its most visible efforts, the UN, along with its specialized
agencies, is also engaged in a wide array of activities to improve
people’s lives around the world – from disaster relief, through
education and advancement of women, to peaceful uses of
atomic energy.
