DIRECTIONS: Part I

Write a paragraph of 100-150 words that explains the concepts of rational and irrational
numbers to sixth graders. Include any art or diagrams as necessary.

Previously we have learned about different types of numbers, such as:

Natural numbers – counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ………….

Whole numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ………..
Integers …… -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …….

What will we get if write all integers including fractions as well?

3 1 1 1 1 3
For example: …… −1, − , − , − , 0, , , , 1, …….
4 2 4 4 2 4
We get a set of rational numbers.

Rational Numbers

Any number that can be represented as a ratio of two integers 𝑝/𝑞, where 𝑞 ≠ 0 is known
as a rational number.

All natural numbers are rational numbers. Each of them can be written as a ratio of integers.
3 1
Ex: 3 = 1 , 1 = 1
Think about it!
All whole numbers are also rational numbers.
0
Ex: 0 = 1

Similarly, all integers are also rational numbers, since Are decimals rational numbers?
they can also be written as a ratio. Try writing a decimal number as
ratio to find out the answer!
−2 3 −3
Ex: −2 = ,−4 =
1 4

Irrational Numbers

Let’s take a look at a few decimal numbers.

1.3 = 1 3/10 = 13/10

This number can be represented as a ratio, thus it is a rational number.

We can also write fractions as decimal numbers.

7/8 = 0.875

20/3 = 6.6666….

In the above examples, the decimals either stop or repeat.

Are there any decimals which do not stop or repeat?

Let’s consider the number π or pi, which is used for describing properties of a circle.
22
𝜋= = 3.141592654 … ….
7
Here the decimal neither stops nor repeats.

This is also true for square roots of some integers.

Ex: √7 = 2.64575 ….

The square root of 7 is a decimal number that neither stops nor repeats.

Irrational Numbers

The decimal numbers which as non-terminating and non-repeating cannot be

represented as ratio of two integers. Such numbers are known as irrational numbers.

DIRECTIONS: Part II

Read the Common Core Standards provided and write one multiple choice question for each
standard.

1. Gertie and her friends are wrapping Christmas presents for

their classmates. Their teacher gave them 35 m of ribbon. The
teacher used 7 m of ribbon for her own presents and asked
Gertie to distribute the rest between Gerties and six other
students. How much ribbon should Gertie give to each
student?
a. 6 m
b. 4 m
c. 7 m
d. 8 m
2. Which of the following triangle is the same as the one shown below?

a.

d.
c.

3. The students of grade 7 participated in a race. The running time (in seconds) of each
athlete and their height (in cm) was recorded in a scatter plot. Answer the following
questions by carefully observing the scatter plot given below:
