Deriving the Law of Sines:
Solving Oblique Triangle Involving Two
Angles and a Side Opposite One of Them
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Deriving the Law

of Sines: Solving Oblique Triangle Involving Two Angles and a Side Opposite One of Them!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematic Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Deriving the Law

of Sines: Solving Oblique Triangle Involving Two Angles and a Side Opposite One of Them!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

RECAP
Direction: Define each of the following words below.
1. Oblique triangle
2. Acute triangle
3. Obtuse triangle

LESSON

From your previous self-learning modules, you have learned about oblique
triangles. In this lesson, you will learn how to solve for the missing parts of the
oblique triangle given the following:

1. two angles and a non-included side (AAS) or

2. two angles and the included side (ASA)
Deriving the Law of Sines
△ABC contains altitude CE, which extends from C and intersects AB. We will
refer to the length of altitude CE as x.

We know that sin𝐴 = and sin𝐵 = , by the definition of sine. If we cross-
𝑏 𝑎

multiply both equations and substitute, we will have the Law of Sines.
b(sin A) = x and a(sin B) = x
↘ ↙
b(sin A) = a(sin B)
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵
=
𝑎 𝑏

Extending these ratios to angle C and side c, we arrive at both forms of the
Law of Sines:

sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵 sin 𝐶 a b c

= = or = =
𝑎 𝑏 𝑐 sin A sin B sin C

B
Illustrative Example: SAA Case
Find the missing parts of ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 on the right.
Given: Two angles and one side a=6
c
∠𝐴 = 42°
∠𝐶 = 70°
a=6 42° 70°
A C
Solutions: b
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐶
Since, side b and ∠𝐵 are not yet given, we can use the formula = .
𝑎 𝑐
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐶
= Formula to use to solve for c
𝑎 𝑐
sin 42° sin 70°
= Substitute the given values
6 𝑐

𝑐 sin 42° = 6 sin 70° Cross multiply

0.6691 𝑐 = 6(0.9397) Compute for the values of sin 42° and sin 70°
using a scientific calculator
0.6691 𝑐 = 5.6382 Simplify
5.6382
c= Solve for c
0.6691

c = 8.43
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵
To solve for the side b, the formula to be used is = . Notice that ∠𝐵 is
𝑎 𝑏

unknown. But you have learned in your Grade 8 Mathematics that in any triangle,
the sum of the measures of the angles of the three angles is 180°. Using this
concept, ∠𝐴 + ∠𝐵 + ∠𝐶 = 180°, we have
42° + ∠𝐵 + 70° = 180°
112° + ∠𝐵 = 180°
∠𝐵 = 180° − 112°
∠𝐵 = 68°
Thus, we can now solve for side b.
Following the steps used earlier in solving for c, we now have
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵
=
𝑎 𝑏
B
sin 42° sin 68°
=
6 𝑏 68°
𝑏 sin 42° = 6 sin 68°
0.6691 𝑏 = 6(0.9272) c = 8.43 a=6
0.6691 𝑏 = 5.5632
5.5632
b=
0.6691
42° 70°
b = 8.31 A
b = 8.31
C
Thus, the oblique triangle with the measures of its parts is shown at the right.
