PMRE 411: Reservoir Engineering

Introduction to Reservoir Engineering

What is Petroleum

• Petroleum is a naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbons.

• Petroleum is a gaseous, liquid or semisolid substance, present in the pore space

of porous rocks, referred to as reservoir rocks.

Petroleum Reservoirs

3 major steps involved in the creation of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs:

1. Origin of Hydrocarbon (Source Rock)

2. Migration of Hydrocarbons

3. Accumulation of Hydrocarbon (Reservoir Rock)

Origin of Hydrocarbon

• Dead organic matter buried under anoxic conditions for 100-400 millions years.

• Layers of silt, sand and other sediments settled over.

• The organic matter in sediments, subjected to increased temperature and

pressure is converted into petroleum hydrocarbons.

• The composition of the organic matter strongly influences whether the organic

matter can produce coal, oil or gas.

So… What is Reservoir Engineering?

Reservoir Engineering includes but not limited to

- Reserve estimation
- Determining ultimate recovery potential
- PVT analysis of reservoir fluids
- Creating field development plans, well proposals, recovery procedures and reservoir management
programs
- Reservoir simulation to determine optimal development plans
- Design and implementation of carbon sequestration projects
