CHAPTER 1

LARO MUNA, ARAL MAMAYA: THE EFFECT OF MOBILE LEGEND

TO THE TIME MANAGEMENT OF GRADE 11-GAS STUDENTS

AT PASACAO ACADEMY, INC.

INTRODUCTION:

The effects of Mobile Legends to the time management of Grade-11 GAS students at
Pasacao Academy, Inc. In this era, technology and the Internet is growing rapidly.
Included in the game. In the past, we are familiar with traditional games.But because of
the changing times, the game traditionally was replaced by the name of this online
games specially mobile legend, those games will test the effect of behaviour, and time
management of Grade-11 GAS students againts addiction to online games. Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang is a multiplayer online battle arena game developed and released
by Montoon due to its high accessibility. Because this game is so easy to play, the
Grade-11 GAS students spend more time playing it than they do studying and
socializing. This can alter students’ psychological mindsets, causing tardiness, lack of
focus, and anger control issues, all of which affect their academic performance. Time
management concerns are also significantly affected. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
originated from the extremely popular computer game World of Warcraft and has
become a huge hit among gamers, particularly students.

On a global scale, Mobile Legends, a popular online game, has had a significant impact
on the time management of students globally. The game’s addictive nature has led to
many students spending considerable amounts of time playing, often at the expense of
their academic commitments. A study conducted at the Asian College of Technology
revealed that the majority of students surveyed played Mobile Legends “sometimes”,
with most playing for less than an hour per day. However, the study also found that
20% of the students admitted to skipping school to play the game. Despite this, the
majority of the respondents maintained a grading average of 89 – 80, suggesting that
while the game had an impact on their time, it did not significantly affect their academic
performance Mobile Legends and academic performance. However, the researchers
concluded that students could play mobile games as long as they knew how to manage
their time productively to avoid negatively impacting their academic performance. This
highlights the importance of balance and time management when engaging in activities
like playing Mobile Legends. It’s worth noting that the impact of Mobile Legends on
students’ time management can vary depending on individual habits, academic
commitments, and personal discipline. It underscores the need for further research to
fully understand the global scale of this impact.

In the Philippines, the impact of Mobile Legends on students in the Philippines might
affect their academic performance by playing online games like Mobile Legends.
According to the study of Delos Santos & Cornillez, (2020) the students’ time spent on
playing online mobile games at home and the type of games that students played at
school have significant bearing to their academic performance. Excessive gaming has
been linked to impaired learning ability, focus troubles, poor time management and
poor academic performance. According to research, students who are addicted to
computer games do poorly in class, with a negative association between addiction and
academic accomplishment. Academic performance can be negatively influenced by
factors such as gaming time, gender, attendance, the number of close friends, and job
preferences. To counteract the detrimental effects of gaming on their studies, students
must efficiently control their gaming time, avoid excessive absences, and engage in
academically beneficial activities.
With the school context, Playing Mobile Legends has various effects on students. It has
been found that the intensity of playing the game can impact students’ learning
motivation. Students who play the game sometimes or with a middle intensity show no
impact on their learning motivation. However, students who play the game often or
with a high intensity experience a decrease in their learning motivation. On the other
hand, Mobile Legends has been perceived by students as an effective medium to learn
English. It has been reported that playing the game helps in vocabulary enrichment,
listening practice, reading and spelling improvement, writing skills, and English
pronunciation and speaking enhancement. Additionally, excessive indulgence in playing
Mobile Legends can hinder the cultivation of good moral behavior and hinder the steady
progress of society.

The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of Mobile Legends to the time
management of Grade-11 GAS students at Pasacao Academy, Inc. This study aims to
understand the influence of Mobile Legends on students’ academic performance, daily
routines, and overall time allocation. And to uncover potential correlations between
playing Mobile Legends and students’ ability to manage their time effectively for
studying, attending classes, completing assignments, and participating in other
activities. By examining this relationship, the research seeks to provide insights into the
possible influences of gaming on students’ time management skills and overall
academic performance.

Statement of the Problem


The study can systematically investigate the impact of Mobile Legends on the time

management of Grade 11-GAS students at Pasacao Academy, Inc. It allows for a focused

exploration of the research questions and provides a structured approach to analyzing

the effects of mobile gaming on student behavior and academic performance. The study

aimed to address the following inquiries:

1. How much time does the game Mobile Legends takes on the daily hours of each

individual of the population? (Background

overview: Bad effect emphasis, neglecting other significant chores)

2. What are the direct and indirect effect of Mobile Legends towards the stated

population, looking at both ways? (Tackling about how it takes tool on the overall health

of the individual in various aspect, such as in mental, social, and physical)

3. How does the game Mobile Legends takes tool on the stated population’s behavior?

4. How does Mobile Legends affect the states population’s academic performance or

academic-related engagement?

5. What are the effects of Mobile Legends in the overall aspect of health of the stated

population?

Significance of the Study


The results of the study, LARO MUNA, ARAL MAMAYA: THE EFFECT OF MOBILE

LEGENDS TO THE TIME MANAGEMENT OF GRADE 11-GAS STUDENTS AT PASACAO

ACADEMY, INC., will be significant to the following:

Teachers and School Administrators: The purpose of this study is to offer

educational professionals—teachers, school administrators, and others—valuable

insights. Knowing how mobile games, such as Mobile Legends, affect students’ time

management abilities in Grade 11 can help teachers create plans to help students

successfully manage their free time and academic obligations.

Parents and Guardians: An important segment of the study’s audience consists of

parents and guardians of Pasacao Academy, Inc. Pupils enrolled in grade 11. Parents

can more effectively guide and oversee their children’s screen time and recreational

activities if they have a better knowledge of how Mobile Legends affects their kids’ time

management.

Students: An essential target audience for this study is the actual Grade 11 GAS

students. After learning about how Mobile Legends might affect their ability to manage

their time, students might consider how their own online gaming habits and behaviors

relate to their academic obligations.


Researchers and Academics: This study holds significance for additional

investigation and examination for scholars and researchers in the domains of education,

psychology, and technological studies. The results of the study can add to the body of

knowledge in academia already available on the usage of technology and how it affects

student behavior.

Policy Makers and Advocates: The findings of this study may also be pertinent to

those who are engaged in the creation of educational policies and who support the

welfare of students. Analyzing how Mobile Legends affects time management can help

with conversations about digital literacy, acceptable screen times, and the general

wellbeing of students.

Scope and Delimitation

This is the scope of the research study. The impact of the popular mobile game Mobile

Legends on the time management abilities of Grade 11 students enrolled at Pasacao

Academy, Inc.’s General Academic Strand (GAS) is the specific subject of this study.

The purpose of the study is to investigate how students’ use of Mobile Legends affects

how much time they spend on academic assignments and gaming. Pasacao Academy,

Inc. Grade 11 students that play Mobile Legends are a part of the study. The study’s

participants are chosen based on their regular participation in the game and their

willingness to participate in the research. A precise time period for data collection and

analysis is taken into consideration in this study. The study could concentrate on a
certain time frame during the academic year when information about students’ gaming

and time management practices is gathered and assessed. The study may employ

questionnaires, interviews, observation, or a mix of these techniques to learn about

students’ time management strategies, gaming habits, academic standing, and opinions

about Mobile Legends.

This is the following delimitation of the study. The study focuses exclusively on Grade

11 students at Pasacao Academy, Inc. Consequently, the findings cannot be generalized

to other educational institutions or student populations. The results are specific to the

context of this particular school. The study specifically investigates the influence of

Mobile Legends on time management skills and does not encompass other mobile

games or online activities. The findings are delimited to the effects of this particular

game on Grade 11 students. The research is delimited to Grade 11 students enrolled in

the General Academic Strand (GAS). The findings may not apply to students in other

grade levels or academic strands within the same school or different educational

settings. The study may delimit external factors such as socio-economic background,

family dynamics, or individual characteristics of students that could potentially influence

their time management skills. These factors are not within the scope of this research.

Definition of terms
The study titled “Laro Muna, Aral Mamaya: The Effect of MOBILE LEGENDS on the

Time Management of Grade 11-GAS Students at Pasacao Academy, Inc.” Aims to

establish a shared comprehension of the key concepts and variables involved in the

research inquiry. In order to enhance comprehension of the study, the researchers have

provided definitions of terms that will act as a reference for the readers, aiding in a

clear understanding of the issue being addressed by the researchers. The subsequent

terms and their explanations are as follows:

“Laro Muna, Aral Mamaya.” Is a Filipino expression that means “Play first, study

later,” suggesting a preference for playing Mobile Legends over schoolwork.

MOBILE LEGENDS. Is a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game

accessible on mobile devices, known for its competitive gameplay and large player

community.

Time Management. Involves prioritizing tasks, effectively scheduling time, and

utilizing time efficiently to reach goals and objectives.

Grade 11-GAS. Pertains to Grade 11 students studying in the General Academic

Strand (GAS) at Pasacao Academy, Inc., a specific group being studied.


Pasacao Academy, Inc. Is the institution where the research is being conducted,

providing the setting for the investigation.

Effect. Refers to the impact or influence of Mobile Legends gameplay on the time

management practices and academic performance of Grade 11-GAS students.
