Lesson Idea Name: Narrative Story Telling

Grade Level/Content Area: 4th grade Reading/Writing
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE4W3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Creative communication - 1.6.b. Students able to do by the end of this lesson:
I want students to be able to create a narrative
create original works or responsibly
that has a clear sequence of events, and they will
repurpose or remix digital resources into create a podcast of them reading the story
new creations) allowed. Students will be able to make a podcast
with Spotify podcasts.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can create a story that has a clear order of events.
I can create a podcast that reads my story allowed.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify Podcasts

Description of Software: It is a tool that allows the users to create their own podcasts, where they
can record their voice, add sound effects and music.

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): Create new episode | Spotify for Podcasters

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology tool?)
Please put an X in the box or next to the level(s). Do not highlight or bold the response.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

X Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning

newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
Write a paragraph describing how the lesson will be implemented using the prompts as your
guide. Remember, this lesson MUST facilitate STUDENT-USE of an audio or video tool to
demonstrate their learning on a topic of your choice:
What activity will you plan for your students using this tool and how will it be introduced? How will
you make students aware of their goal(s)? How will students utilize the technology? What will the
teacher do? How will feedback be provided to the students? Finally, how will you conclude the
lesson?

The activity planned is for students to create a narrative driven story that they will write/ type. The
students will then record themselves reading the story and use Spotify (the tech tool) to record and
post. Their narrative should have a clear sequence of events, descriptive details and display an
effective use of technique.
The tool will be introduced through my podcast created through Spotify and I will discuss what is
expected of them within this assignment/lesson.
The teacher will assist students with creating their writing and podcast using scaffolding.
Feedback will be provided through the grading of a rubric with the designated objectives listed and a
sum of points for each section of the rubric. The graded rubric will be given to the students after
they submit.
Students will also present to the class and other students will have a chance to do TAG on jam board.
The lesson will be concluded with presentations for each student.
Managing student learning: Will the tool(s) used for this lesson cause a shift in the behavior of
students where they move from passive to active social learners? How?
How will you allow for time-on-task and shift from passive to active learning: (Examples - Set time
limits, student must submit a plan (storyboard) before using tool, co-use/co-engagement, Ask 3 then
Me, etc.)
It will cause a shift in students’ behavior where they switch from passive learners to active learners
in a few different ways. Students will have to listen to the given podcast by the teacher and then use
that information they learned to apply to their own work. Students will also have to use their voice
and record their own voices reading their writings, as the whole class will hear them. Then students
will have to observe their other classmates and write TAG- Tell something you like, ask a question,
Give some advice.

I will allow time for students to switch from passive to active learners by setting time limits. Students
will have two days, Monday, and Tuesday, to work on the writing portion of their narrative. Then
two days, Wednesday, and Thursday, to work on the recording portion. Then we will use Friday for
presentations and TAG.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This tool supports the framework of UDL with Representation, as it allows students to create their
own podcasts that conveys their mastery of this standard. It enhances their learning as they will

actively create something of their own and read their written story allowed. They will have to create
a podcasts using spotify podcasts and read their story.
Reflection:
After designing this lesson, I feel the activity I have created will impact student learning by having
them create a story of their own that portrays events and then creating their own podcasts that
shows them reading their story allowed. They will have to read their story in a manner that is
engaging as well. Students will learn to write a story with events, create with a new technology tool
and read with a good voice. They will be practicing many skills in this lesson. I look forward to seeing
the student podcasts and listening to their stories, because it will be interesting to see what they
have written and if they were able to make active events in a story.
