Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2
The Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 was developed in Germany and was approved for use in Europe in
2018 but not yet available in the US. With a swipe of a cell phone across a sensor attached to the back of
his arm, Michael Krauser (the developer of the product) can instaneously check his glucose levels. For
Krauser, there are no painful finger pricks, and no hassle trying to get enough blood on test strips to
measure glucose levels of diabetes patients. This system is a “stress-free” solution to checking glucose that
adds a certain security to the life of anyone who uses it. Patient can check their glucose by swiping a
smartphone loaded with the FreeStyle LibreLink app across the sensor. The Bluetooth-enabled sensor
allows users to set sound or vibration alarms on their phones or readers to alert them when their blood
sugar is too low or too high, so they can bring it back to baseline by eating carbs or injecting insulin. The
alerts is extremely important to children and other patients who might not otherwise known of extreme
changes in their glucose levels, especially during sleep.
