QUESTION B3 PROBABILITY Page 3/5 Marks

Use the calculator for all calculations in this question.

The diameters of eggs produced on a farm are normally distributed with mean 60
mm and standard deviation 5 mm.

a) 98 % of the production have diameters in the interval

Calculate the value of k in mm, rounded to 2 decimal places. 5 marks

Eggs with a diameter of 70 mm or more are classified as extra-large.

Show that extra-large eggs make up approximately 2.275 % of the production. 4 marks
b)

The farm produces 4000 eggs per day.

c) Calculate the probability that, in 7 days, the total number of extra-large eggs 5 marks
lies in the interval [600, 650].

Some eggs have more than one yolk.

On average, 30 % of extra-large eggs have more than one yolk, whereas only 0.5 %
of the others have more than one yolk.
d) Calculate the probability that an egg, chosen at random from the eggs from this 3 marks
farm, will have more than one yolk.

e) Calculate the probability that an egg with more than one yolk is not an extra- 3 marks
large egg.
