Bowthruster calculation sheet
Selection of a bowthruster is based on vessel size and shape (resulting in windage) and windpressure.
Also the position of the bowthruster in the boat will influence the actual effectiveness of the bowthruster.
This selection guide can be used for both sailboats and motorboats.
1. Select windpressure from the table in which the bowthruster will be used when docking (kgf/m2) 7.5 kgf/m2
(for example when used in force 5 winds, maximum windpressure will be 7,5 (kgf/m2)
3. Height of the hull above the waterline (avarage height in meters - dimension B) 6 m
4. Reduction factor 0.75 to 1 (0.75 light cruiser, 1 heavy displacement high windage) 1
5. How far from the bow is the thruster installed? (distance in meters - dimension C) 12 m

Please note that this sheet is solely meant to give an indication for the thruster size to be used on a boat. When selecting a thruster, many variables
will influence the final choice. In the end it is the practical experience of the company advising the customer that is crucial for correct choice of
thruster for the specific vessel and operational circumstances.

SHIP DATA
Name : SABUK BRAHMAPUTRA
Type : RORO FERRY
A. Anchor Calculation
1. Equipment Number
The Equipment Number for anchors and chain cables is to be calculated as follows (IRS Section 3 Part
3.1.1)
Δ = 6265 ton
B = 18.00 m
H = 12.00 m (based on measurement on autocad)
A = 560.818 m2 (based on measurement on autocad)
Eq. N = Δ2/3 + 2 B.H + 0.1A
= 413.963
From the table above, the ship will use anchor, chain, and rope as following :
a. Anchor
Brand = Washington Chain and Supply (WCS)
Type = AC-14 Stockless HHP Anchor
Mass Req. =

b. Chain
Length = 385 m
Diameter = 36 mm (Grade VL K1)
= 32 mm (Grade VL K2)
c. Townline
L Min = 180 m
Break Load = 98 kN
d. Mooring Lines:
Amount = 3
L min = 120 m
Break Load = 49 kN
2. Chain Locker
Based on GL Hull i-1-1 Section 18: E. Chain Locker, the minimum required stowage capacity without
mudbox for the two bow anchor chains is as follow :
a. Volume of chain locker
S = 1,1 x d2 x l / 105 ( m3 )
Where :
d = Chain diameter (mm)
l = Chain Length (m)
S = 4.337 m3
For two bow anchor, the total volume of chain lockers are :
Total Vol = 2 m3
the bottom side there is addition for mud box with heigth of 700 mm and addition 300 mm for cement
For dc : 32 mm
f. Windlass Selection
Based on the ppulling force requirement, the windlass/winch used is

c. Determine Force Acting on Rudder
So, based on the description above, the value of each variable is
k1 = (λ+2)/3
λ = 1.1636364 (taken = 1,2)
k1 = 1.0666667
k2 = 1.1
k3 = 1

So the diameter of rudder stock is (minimal 2 inch pas diikatkan steering gear, semakin kebawah semakin besar 2x nya)
dt = 4.2 x (QR x k)^1/3
dt = 64.912 mm
Taken = 68 mm

Where :
dm = Internal diameter of suction line bilge
B = Breadth moulded = 18.000 m
D = depth to bulkhead = 7.50 m
L = Rule length of ship = 83.1 m
So :
dm = 1.5 x (L(B+D))^0.5 + 25 (mm)
= 1.5 x (33,181 (10,698+1,70))^0.5 + 25 (mm)
= 94.049710354 mm
= 3.70 inch

IV. OUTPUT PARAMETER
V. DETAIL CALCULATION
Determination of required fresh water/person/day is refer to "Lectures on Ship Design
& Ship Theory”. On the calculation of required fresh water is needed some data as
follows:
Total Crew (Zc) = 84 Person
Endurance (t) = 10 Days
Vs = 14 Knot
W fws = Zc x T x Cfws
Where:
Doc.No. 10 - 42 21 DN086- DS
Calculation and Specification of Rev.No. 00
Domestic System
Page 9 of 28
W fwc = Zc xT x C fwc
Where:
= 5 gr/BHP
So
ρ FW = 1000
V FW = weight of fresh water / ρ fresh water
= 97.98 m3
Enduranc = 10 days = 240 Hours
The pump does not need to operated continously, so that is why Hydrophore is
highly recommended to install on board.
Vh = Vo + (D x Pm ) / ( 6 x ( Pm - Po ) (Soekarsono, Ship
outfittings.halaman
Where: 284)
Vh = Hydrophore volume
Doc.No. 10 - 42 21 DN086- DS
Calculation and Specification of Rev.No. 00
Domestic System
Page 11 of 28
Vo = Residual volume (2% Wfw Total) = 1.9596 m3
Pm = Maximum pressure = 4 Bar
Po = Minimum pressure = 3 Bar
D = FW consumption average = 0.40825 m3/hour
So the hydrpohore volume is:
Vh = 2.231767 m3
where:
Q = capacity of sanitary fresh water pump
v = water velocity in pipe
= 2 m/s
so diameter minimum of sanitary fresh water pipe is:
dH = 0.008499 mm = 8.49889 mm
Then for sanitary fresh water pipe, it will be use carbon steel galvanized pipe according
to JIS Standart:
Thickness 3.7 mm
Inside Diameter 41.2 mm
Doc.No. 10 - 42 21 DN086- DS
Calculation and Specification of Rev.No. 00
Domestic System
Page 12 of 28
after we determine the sanitary fresh water pipe we can calculate the minimum
head for fresh water pump
Rn = Reynold Number
v = Water Velocity (3m/s)
dH = Inside Diameter of Ballast Pipe
Major Losses is Losses cause by friciton in along pipe and type of flow, where :
λ = Because Turbulent flow we can calculate the value of λ with this
formula λ=0.02+0.0005/D
= 0.0321
L = Length of Suction Side
= 2 m
v = Flow Velocity
= 2 m/s

Calculation and Specification of Rev.No. 00
Domestic System
Page 13 of 28
D = Inside Diameter of Sanitary Pipe
= 41.2
So the value of Major Losses is

3 Strainer 1 1.5 1.5

5 Conjuction T 1 1.8 1.8
Total 5.3
so the value of minor losses is:
Minor losses = 2.43119 meter
Major Losses is Losses cause by friciton in along pipe and type of flow
Where:
λ = 0.032136
L = Length of Discharge Side
= 10 meter
v = Flow Velocity (3m/s)
D = Inside Diameter of Ballast Pipe
= 41.2 mm
Doc.No. 10 - 42 21 DN086- DS
Calculation and Specification of Rev.No. 00
Domestic System
Page 14 of 28
So the value of Major Losses is
Major Losses = 3.58 Meter
• Minor Losses = (𝚺𝒏𝒌 𝒙

3 SDNRV 1 2 2
4 Strainer 0 1.5 0

Total 8
so the value of minor losses is:
Minor losses = 3.66972 meter
• Calculation of total head
H = Hs + HP + HV + total Head-loss
= 19.97 meter
So after we calculate the volume of hydropore,capacity and head of fresh water sanitary pump
we can choose the spesification.Head of sanitary pump is must be same or higher than minimum
pressure of hydropore tank.so the choosen spesification is:

So the volume of water closet is:
Total wb = 405 liter
0.405 m3
• Volume of Urinoir
Total ur = Zc x t x tc x cfur
Where:
Zc = Number of Crew = 45 (People)
t = Times per day = 3 (times a day)
Cfwc = FW Consumption = 3 (lt/person/times)
tc = Endurance+Loa(days) = 1 (days)
So the volume of water closet is:
Total wb = 405 liter
0.405 m3
Total grey water from the service system on board for the accomodation and crew :
Total bw = total volume water closet + total volume urinoir
= 0.81 m3 (One day)
= 0.162 m3 (One trip)
• Sewage Holding Tank
Holding tanks for sewage and grey water are to have a capacity sufficient for 24
hours operation of the ship, having regard to the maximum number of persons on
board.So the minimum volume of sewage holding tank is:
V sewage tank = 33.993 m3

• Spesification of Sewage Pump
Capacity of Sewage Pump
to calculate the capacity of sewage pump is can be used this formula:
Q = V/t
Where:
V = Volume of Sewage Holding Tank
= 3.228 m3
t = Estimition time to empty the tank
= 4 Hours
so we can calculate the capacity of sewage pump is
Q = 0.807 m3
With the sewage pump capacity we can calculate the diameter of domestic sea
water pipe with formula:

where:
Q = minimum capacity of domestic sea water pump
v = water velocity in pipe
= 3 m/s
so diameter minimum of sanitary fresh water pipe is:
dH = 0.009756 m
= 9.75641 mm
Then for sewage pipe, it will be use carbon steel galvanized pipe according to JIS

1. Calculation of Fire pump and pump capacity
According SOLAS Chapter II-2 Regulation 10 part 2.2 abouut fire pump, mention
that the total capacity of fire pump not to be less than 4/3 from capacity bilge
pump, so capacity fire pump is :
𝑄= 4/3

Q bilge pump required = 60 m3/h
= 0.022 m /s
3
Capacity of each fire main pump is not less than 80% of the total required capacity. Thus, the minimum capacity
of fire pump is:
Qf min = 0.8*33
= 64.21333 m3/h = 0.017837 m3/s
1.070222 m3/min
