If you are interested in the history of your house, you might like to get in touch with a house historian. A house historian's job is to
find out the history of a particular house. They try to discover who built the house, who (A 1 )... in the building since it (A 2 )... , and
what was on the site of the building before. Their research can uncover all kinds of interesting information. We spoke to house
historian Tracy Collins, who told us some of her stories. One of the houses she had to research was a flat at 200 Oxford Street in
London. She discovered that the author George Orwell (A 3 )... with the owners of the flat. He had slept in the smallest bedroom in
the flat, which was very dark. Later, when he wrote his novel 1984, he (A4) ... the room as the inspiration for the famous
Room 101. On another occasion, she (A 5 )... into the story of a block of flats in Orchard Court, also in London. She (A 6 )... out that
the flat had been used by spies during the Second World War. The spies (A7) ... to the building for a job interview and later they
were sent on a mission. If you can't afford to pay a professional to research the history of your house, you can try to research the
past yourself. You may not find out anything particularly interesting about your house, but you’re sure to enjoy the search.

We’ve all seen headlines like 'Woman drives into river after GPS error’. Just the other day an American tourist drove for five
hours across Iceland when his GPS incorrectly sent him (A8) ... the wrong direction. It was only after the man had suffered
much discomfort during the 266-mile journey and arrived (A9) ... his destination that he realised his GPS had misled him. So, is
GPS making us all stupid? Certainly, some experts believe we’re too reliant on it. They say that map-reading skills haven’t been
taught in mainstream lessons for years, but experts suggest they should be introduced into lessons. Without navigation skills,
it’s possible young people will be discouraged (A10) ... applying (A11) ... certain jobs or, (A12) ... the very least, risk the same

(А13) I think it’s very interesting that human beings are ... only creatures which listen to music f o r ... pleasure. A lot of research
has been done to find out why we listen to music, and there seem to be three main reasons.
(A14) Firstly, we listen to music to make us remember important moments in ... past. When we h e a r... certain piece of music,
we remember hearing it for the first time in some very special circumstances. Obviously, this music varies from person to person.
(A15) Secondly, if we want to go from one activity to another, we often use music to help us make the change. That’s mainly
why people listen to music in cars, and they often listen to one kind of music when they’re going to ... work and another kind
when they’re coming home. The third reason why we listen to music is to intensify ... emotion that we’re feeling.
(A16) For example, when we're planning ... romantic dinner, we lay ... table, we light candles, and then we think what music
would make this even more romantic.

§ 1. Indian rail travel is unavoidably dirty, and a balance must be struck between having the window shutters open to see
the countryside and closing them against the heat and dust.
§ 2. The air-conditioned carriages are generally comfortable, and the train catering manager takes orders, which he
passes by phone to the next stop but two, where the food comes aboard in metal dishes. An excellent vegetarian meal
was more than enough for my wife and me, although it was a fingers-in-the-dish exercise if you didn’t have your own knife
and fork. Rice plantations in the heat of the day gave way to cotton and maize fields in the evening.
§ 3. Our shower, breakfast and bed in the West End Hotel at Bangalore were never more welcome. The silks, silk shirts
and ties in Mahatma Gandhi Road are irresistible when offered at half, or sometimes even a third, of European prices.
§ 4. The drive to Mysore took us via a silk farm, and families of monkeys began to appear at the roadside as the country
became wilder. The Sultan Tipu’s summer house outside Mysore is a spacious monument to 19th-century good taste, but
it sinks to one-star status in comparison with the Maharajah’s main palace in the town. Overwhelming in size and
splendour, endless wealth has been spent on it over the years for the best that money could buy anywhere on earth. Its
100,000-lightbuib outline illumination is equally impressive after dark, and was extended for an extra half-hour at - most
probably - the taxpayer's expense, in honour of the Indian Finance Minister’s visit the night we were there.
§ 5. Our driver broke the onward journey south at an ancient Hindu temple where we were warmly welcomed to join the
service. After crossing the border from Karnataka into Kerala in the Mudumalai animal reserve, the road started its long
climb into the hills. Through eucalyptus woods and tea plantations the air became cooler and the roadside greener.
§ 6. We reached the Fernhill Palace Hotel at Udagamandalam (Ootacamund, otherwise known as ‘Ooty’) in the early
afternoon, left our driver and his car and, as if in a time machine, stepped back 60 years. Empty apart from ourselves and
another couple, this form er Maharajah’s residence was a ghosthouse of faded colonial gentility (аристократия). The
ballroom with its padlocked grand piano, the drawing room, the dining room, the billiard room, the bar and the
Maharajah's suite were all designed on the grand scale of half a century ago.

“The key to getting teenagers to respect you is to respect them first,” says Penny Palmano, who has written a best-selling
book on teenagers. “You can’t continue to treat them the same way that you have been treating them for the previous 12
years: they have opinions that count. (A 4 3 )____ You’d be very upset. You'd never say that to an adult, because it shows
a total lack of respect.”
Palmano, who has a daughter aged 19 and a 16-year-old stepdaughter, has even allowed the children to hold several
teenage parties at her home. They passed without problems. "I've found that if you have brought them up to do the right
thing, and then trust them to do it, usually they’ll behave well,” she says. “I make them sandwiches and leave them alone.
But I make it clear that they have to clear up any mess. (A 4 4 )____ ”
She agrees that teenagers can be irritating: enjoying a world that is free of responsibility, yet desperate for independence.
She doesn't think, however, that they are trying to annoy you. Until recently, scientists assumed that the brain finished
growing at about the age of 13 and that teenage problems were a result of rising hormones and a desire for
independence. (A 4 5 )____

PT-2020/2021 гг Этап I. Вариант 1
“This would explain why many teenagers can’t make good decisions, control their emotions, prioritise or concentrate on
several different things at the same time. (A 4 6 )____ It means that they do not intentionally do the wrong thing just to
annoy their parents," says Palmano.
The key to happiness for all, Palmano believes, is calm negotiation and compromise. If you want your teenagers to be
home by 11 p.m., explain why, but listen to their counter-arguments, if it’s a Saturday, you might consider agreeing to
midnight (rather than 1 a.m., which is what they had in mind). (A 4 7 )____ Instead, ask if they’ve had a problem with public
transport and let it pass; they’ve almost managed what you asked. She urges a bit of perspective about other things, too.
“There have been times when my daughter’s room has not been as tidy as I expected, but as she said once, ‘I’m a
teenager - what do you expect? I’m not turning into a criminal, it’s just clothes on the floor.’”
“It’s vital to choose your battles carefully: don’t criticise teenagers for having an untidy room, then suddenly criticise them
for other things. (A 4 8 )____ One minute, it’s about an untidy room and the next, you're saying, ‘And another thing ...’ and
criticising them for everything.”

1) It’s parents’ responsibility to help teens achieve success by growing socially, emotionally and academically.
2) Imagine if you'd spent two hours getting ready to go out for the evening and someone said, ‘You're not going out

3) However, it's a win-win situation all around.
4) I’ve never had a problem; in fact, the kitchen was sometimes cleaner than I’d left it.
5) But it turns out that the region of the brain that controls common sense and emotions is not fully mature until the early
twenties.

1) If they are up to 20 minutes late, don’t react angrily.
2) Parents often complain that teenagers can be charming to people outside the home but irritating to their family.
3) For example, they may find it difficult to make the right decision between watching television, ringing a friend, or
finishing their homework.
4) On these occasions, parents tend to mention all the other things that they may or may not have done wrong.
5) It might be difficult to accept, but a new approach to living with teenagers is for parents to look at their own behaviour.
