Introduction to painting.

Time needed: 25 minutes.


Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding
of tempera paint, including its composition, characteristics, and application techniques, by
creating a simple artwork using tempera paint. Students will also master cleaning brushes.
Standards:
 FA 8.2.1 Students will use the creative process (glossary) to investigate and communicate
personal voice in artwork.
 FA 8.2.4.a Students can identify and demonstrate the role of an artist and explore art-
related career opportunities
 FA 8.2.1.e Investigate and demonstrate the relationship between technique, skill, and
craftsmanship (glossary).

Learning Targets:
 Preparation Proficiency: Students will demonstrate mastery of cleaning brushes and gain
a base understanding of tempera paint techniques.
 Collaborative Engagement: Students will engage in collaborative discussions, providing
constructive feedback and support to peers during the preparation and planning phases of
the project, fostering a collaborative and inclusive creative environment.

Anticipatory Set (5 minutes):


1. Students will enter class and follow the normal protocol of gathering their art supplies
and quietly sitting at their desk.
2. Once students are settled the teacher will direct their attention to the powerpoint where
their bellringer question is displayed: As you settle in, imagine a world without color.
How would it feel? How would it impact art, expression, and our daily lives? Take a
moment to jot down your thoughts. We're about to dive into a vibrant world of tempera
paint and explore its possibilities!
3. After giving students time to answer the questions there will be a brief group discussion
about their answers
4. After the discussion is completed the lesson will be introduced, see below.
Introduction
1. Students will be introduced to tempera paint by being asked their familiarity with the
medium and class discussion will happen.
2. Teacher will then began to explain the differences between tempera paint and acrylic (the
last paint medium used.
3. Teacher will pause between each difference and ask students to reflect and discuss why
these differences exist. (for example why do you think tempera dries faster)
4. teacher will then reinforce these differences.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice:
1. students will be asked to watch and follow along independently with two videos, one on
washing brushes and the other on tempera paint techniques.
2. Teacher will circle classroom and check in on how they are doing.
Closure/Connection to Next Lesson:
1. Once students start finishing up teacher will explain that the techniques they learned
today are skill building exercises for the project they will start next class.
2. Students will begin cleaning up 5 minutes before the bell rings and be asked to apply
what they learned from the brush video to clean their brushes.
