Part II: Dealing with Complete tests

Test 001: (BFEM 2015)
I. Reading comprehension (8 marks)
Uncle, please forgive me. “I will try to pass my exam next time”: cried Guinea Jo when his
uncle applied the long thick cane on his bare back and buttocks.
As if Uncle Imam suspected what had happened, he bellowed angrily, “Passing your exam next
time is not the point. You must tell me how you failed your school leaving examination”
Guinea Jo: Dada Awuru caused it.
Uncle Imam: Do you mean the traditional doctor near Ketu village on the way to my farm?
Guinea Jo: Yes, Uncle. His medicine let me down in the examination hall.
Uncle Imam applied the cane once more and shouted, “You are a liar. You must tell me the
whole truth’’
Guinea Jo: Uncle, I’m telling you the truth. Six months before our school leaving examination,
I heard about Dada Awuru. He was reputed to be a powerful juju man and in a position to help
ambitious students pass their exams without reading their books at all. I went to consult Awuru,
who boasted that I would easily pass my exam with a juju handkerchief. He told me that if I
used the hanky (1) to wipe my face, my eyes would be opened spiritually and I would just copy
out the answers to all questions. I saved my transport and pocket money for some months to
buy a juju hanky. I did not bother to read my books any more throughout the five months
preceding the examinations.
Uncle Imam: “What happened at the examination hall "?
Guinea Jo: When I applied my hanky three times with incantations as directed by Dada Awuru,
the questions remained on the papers given to me by the examiner and I became very nervous,
sweating all over my body !
Uncle Imam: You are a foolish lazy boy. Juju cannot help you pass exam. You have to study
hard day and night. Dada Awuru duped you for nothing. Anyway, you’ve learnt your lessons.

Slightly adapted from G.S Akiode, Sunday Times, June 6, 1980.

Note: (1) a hanky (or handkerchief) = un mouchoir.

Test 003: (BFEM 2018)

1. Musa Sanogo, 22, is a migrant who has just returned to Ivory Coast from Libya after
surviving regular beatings and forced labour in the fields. He is one of about 600 Ivory Coast
migrants that are being repatriated from Libya with the support of the International
Organization for Migration (IOM). Around 150 people landed in the in the Capital Abidjan on
Monday with the rest to be brought home during the week.
2. ‘‘We were slaves,’’ said Musa Sanogo who spent more than four months in Libya trying
to get to Italy by boat. ‘‘For the Arabs (Libyan jailers) black-skinned people are nothing but
animals, dogs are treated better. We were captured and locked in a small room with 60 other
people, and were not able to wash. When the Arabs entered, they wore masks due to the smell,
‘‘he said, shaking his head at the memory. ‘‘When they came to buy you, they judged your
price like merchandise. They bought you so you’re going to work… like a slave. For food, you
are given a piece of bread and a piece of cheese, that’s all… I’m happy to be back here’’ he
said.
3. Filmed images showing black migrants being sold as slaves on social media have
provoked protest across Africa, bringing to public consciousness a situation that has previously
been condemned by many non-governmental groups and observers. Music and football stars
have expressed their outrage at the revelations, including Ivorian Reggae singers Alpha Blondy
and Tiken Jah Fakoly, as well as footballer Didier Drogba. ‘‘It is a double indignation, a cry
from heart! We are shocked to see the children of Africa die…trying to find a better life! This
is humiliation for Africa,’’ they said. The United Nations said the slavery trade should be
investigated as possible crimes against humanity, and the issue will be on agenda at an African
Union-European Union summit in Abidjan.

Test 004: (BFEM exam 2013)

Child labor is the employment of children in a manner that deprives them of their childhood,
and is harmful to their physical and mental development. Africa has the world highest incidence
rates of child labor. The problem is severe in Sub-Saharian Africa where more than 48 million
children aged 5-14 labor for survival. In Northern part of Sub-Saharian Africa Islam is a major
influence. Begging is considered as a service in exchange for quranic education. These children
aged 7-13, for example, are called almudos in the Gambia, or talibés in Senegal. The parents
place their children with a marabout or serigne, a quranic teacher. Here, they split their time
between begging and studying the Quran. In Morocco, it is estimated that about 150,000
children aged 514 were working in 2010. Agriculture and domestic services are the predominant
employers. Young girls locally called petites bonnes (little maids), are sent to work and live as
domestic servants ; many aged 10 or less. These petites bonnes who come from very poor
families face conditions of voluntary servitude including long hours of hard work without
breaks, physical, verbal and sexual abuse, with held wages and even restrictions on their
movement.
…Studies commissioned by the Morocco government find poverty and lack of school, often in
combination, are primary causes of the little maids phenomenon in Morocco. Additionally, rural
parents do not believe that an education or a diploma of any sort can help their girls find a job.
Even where income generation is necessary, we might like to think that these forms of work are
unnecessary. An alternative basis for the argument that child is unambiguously is that it is the
result of decisions taken by parents or employers rather than by children themselves… In any
society that respects human rights, children should be able to seek the protection of the state
when forced to work.
