I. NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Children’s programming in the days of traditional television consisted of shows that

varied in content, such as educational, entertaining, or a bit of both. It is primarily
daytime programming which was intended to appeal to children. (Children’s and
Daytime Programming | Encyclopedia.com, n.d.) But it has undergone significant
changes in recent years. The internet has allowed the possibility of content being shifted
to go multi-platform. The rise of streaming services has allowed former Cable TV
stations like Disney, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network, to launch their past children’s
programs in their particular streaming services (Knibbs, 2023). YouTube, which is
another source of children’s content that is free and extremely accessible, is changing
the way children consume content. Children’s content on YouTube can differ from more
traditional programming for young people. Researchers have found that a great deal of
children’s content on YouTube favors entertainment value designed to appeal to the
site’s search function and automated recommendation system. They are described as
simple, repetitive animated videos with modest production values with seemingly
random titles (Atske, 2020). PBS, a popular television network in the US that caters
specifically to younger audiences, has set a gold standard for educational programs
aimed at children since the 1980s. A popular example of their program is Sesame
Street. Now because of the popularity of the platform, their older and current shows can
currently be found on YouTube. The point is that kids will always pay attention to a
captivating show whether or not it’s on television, (Knibbs, 2023) but with the regulated
and valuable medium the television offers, we can be assured of its reliability since its
invention a decade ago.

There is a need to develop a children’s program on TV because according to the Office

of Communications UK, a smaller choice of high-quality programs was preferable to a
wide choice of lower-quality output (2008). When kids are watching high-quality shows,
they are most likely to be not only engaged and learn with the educational value of the
program but also be entertained to catch their attention (LaScala, 2022). A good
understanding of the target audience is one of the benefits of television. When
developing a program that is made for children, they must have a good understanding
of what appeals to children and must be developed specifically for the appropriate age
group. These are all the advantages the television provides, unlike the Internet in which
the contents are not completely regulated by a governing body like the KBP (Malik,
2018).
II. PROGRAM IDEA

i. Is the program worth doing?

Yes, in a way that we envision it to be essential to the learning of our target audience.
The segment is to provide a learning experience through utilizing the use of media
channels . A dynamic method of learning at home with the material that is suitable to the
level of comprehension and develops a creative way of thinking of our 6th grade
students. .

ii. Is the program doable?

Definitely worth a project as it engages learning and creative production. It will also
present the potential of media production and talents in line to the selected material.
With the proper access to media tools and digital applications, this program can be
achieved.

III. PROGRAM PROPOSAL. State/indicate the following and justify in 3 sentences

a. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

i.Title

"The English Express: All Aboard for Language Fun"

The term express here has two meanings. Firstly, it has connotations to a journey or
adventure like how it is usually used in the context of vehicles such as trains or buses.
Next is the act of expression which means communication. So paired with the word
"English", it's an alliteration that means the journey of learning how to use the English
language in communicating one's thoughts. The subtitle then just reaffirms the intention
of the main title.

iii. Topic

The topic we decided on is English specifically for Grade 6 (details of which will be
deliberated below). It is one of the Core Subjects of the Department of Education as
well as a highly versatile tool considering English is considered the Lingua Franca
(language systematically used to make communication possible between groups of
people who do not share a native language or dialect) of the world (Chirikba, 31).
b. SUBJECT MATTER

i. General

The subject English brings the learner to a process where the Grade 6 students
demonstrate ideas, interpretation, mindset or values. Create pieces of information that
will form part of the students' knowledge in relating, reflecting or using them effectively
in any context or situation. Designed to suit the needs and interest of the students. To
understand the materials used, it is designed to provide information, new learning and
activities that learners should work on. The subjects were prescribed by the Department
of Education along with the presented activities.

ii. Specific

The topic of Biases and Propaganda Devices presents awareness of the Grade 6
students' knowledge and skills. Developing mastery in identifying how words share a
common theme in getting various reactions from people. The learning hopes to engage
the students in a guided and independent mode of learning. Aims to help learners
acquire the essential 21st century skills.

c. TARGET AUDIENCE

i. Demographic Profile

The Demographic of the target audience can be described in these three aspects.
Grade 6 Filipino Students that reside in Region XI Davao. The ages of these students
range from 12-13 years old (Angloinfo). The Developmental plan shared by the DepEd
showed that 6th graders are of Balance Gender Ratio.

ii. Psychographic Profile

Post-pandemic and since the return of Face-to-Face classes, teachers have noticed
students’ comprehension and academic achievements have lowered (Arundel).
Students nowadays are more in tuned with social media and game-based learning (Gok
and Inan, pp143). Most kids are now into Digital technology and or need different stimuli
for learning (Cohen).

d. BROADCAST TIME: (WITH JUSTIFICATION; 3 SENTENCES)

i. Air Time

The program will air from 10 am to 11 am Every week. A study done by Guzman and
Vera professors from Pangasinan state University explain in their paper that due to the
inclusion of mother tongue, children comprehension of the English Subject has been
affected. As such, having it air in a time where the Brain is more awake will drastically
help the learner absorb the lesson more.

ii. Running Time

The Total running time of the program will be 15 minutes overall, including the 1 ad
break. A study done in North Carolina shows that kids ages 12-13 have an attention
span of 25-40 minutes, however we are also considering the child’s mental exhaustion
from learning. As such we will be doing a 15-minute program that segments the lesson
as to not overwhelm the learners.
